Well, to update myself, apparently the new team is going to be called 'Chivas USA'. I don't think that's a good idea, but we'll see...
It would be a cool name if it wasn't already 'taken'. http://www.tomorrowideation.com/getoffended/Shirtpages/cleveland.html
I'm not a PC person, I just don't want to piss anybody off. And I didn't intend to sound if I wanted a team to be named after Indian names to make them feel better. Derrrr, like that would work! I'm not an idiot, I'm a considerate person.
Its not bad, its just kind of weak in my opinion. Also, there is a St. Louis Steamers professional indoor team. Cobras is good but there already is a soccer club in Cleveland called the Cobras and it could be messy obtaining the rights. Cleveland Bulldogs is perfect and it has some tradition. There was a team with that name in the NFL that won the championship in 1924. Since there was also a Canton Bulldogs in the NFL at the same time it makes it okay to take. Also, just too many high schools and colleges have that nickname to make it a problem legally. No one could possibly claim to own the rights to that name.
It is possible to try to be inclusive? Though it was not mentioned in such context, I thought Pride was a more mulitdimentional name and didn't look at it for just one group (other than the team itself). It also stands for a commitment on the field. And I'm sure there can be a ton of stupid slogans created. But, I still like Roughnecks better. And the Chivas team will have Chivas in the name. Hopefully it will be the city Chivas. Rochester - Rhinos, there is no other. I like Cleveland Bulldogs. Although the Rockers aren't too bad, either. No more of this United stuff. The general US sports fan doesn't know crap about the English game (or European/South American) game and will only get confused by two teams being "called" United. If they think MLS is a joke now, then they really will with two teams the same name. I thought that Univ of GA was a professional team
I sort of like the sound of Cleveland Chaos It sounds like a lot of other teams in the league .......Burn, Fire, Crew, etc......
Chivas De San Diego-same as chivas i guess(colors) Oklahoma City F.C.-cream and black Rochester Raging Rhinos-same Cleveland Dynamo F.C.-RED here are others Houston American FC-red white blue Philadelphia Union-black orange Seattle United-Blue NewYork Cosmos-Green Detroit Racing FC-Blue Florida Blaze FC-Orange colors or same with Miami Fusion with boca junior colors... and that completes our 20 team dream leauge. by....2014.
My .02 cents on the expansion names. Chivas - Sort of like the DC United, just without the city. Also helps if the team is relocated. Rochester - Keep it the Raging Rhinos. OKC - I like the Barons name that has been around Big Soccer for awhile. Cleveland Force or Bulldogs, just as long as they do not go back to the Stokers of the NASL.
Which begs the question; Why refer to these differing nations as one group? I could understand it in a larger context. As Americans, we use the term Europeans but we speak of Italians, or Germans, or the French, or the English but we do not do that with American Indian nations like the Navajo, Sioux, Cherokee, Dakota, Kiowa, Illini, etc. And Mike, although you prefer "American Indian" I have a hard time believing that "Native American" offends you. It seems like more of a preference thing, right? BTW, more on the topic of this thread, there is a great film on this subject called "In Whose Honor?" that any and all should watch. (It still gets me to this day that there is a pro team called the Washington Fu#*ing Redskins that still holds onto that name with no shame. The REDSKINS!!!for chrissakes!)
*#*#*#*#*# being PC! Oklahoma Mauraders Oklahoma Warriors Anyone who doesn't know that a "Cleveland Steamer" is a "hot lunch" needs to repeat elementary school.
Guys - Can you take the American sociology and sports debate to another thread? I thought you'd be upset by "Pride" for entirely different reasons. I know most of my fellow SF residents would think something far different than what you're discussing. Now, why hasn't anyone latched on to The San Diego Brass Monkey?
This is getting ridiculous. My picks: -OKFC (presenting sponsor: Kentucky Fried Chicken) or -Oklahoma Nation -Cleveland Lakers or -CleveLanders (a la the MetroStars) -Rochester Rhino (note the non-plural) -Chivas Del Norte and of course, my favorite: -San Diego Goats
The Legend, I'm just going to assume these names are jokes so I don't look like I have no sense of humor. Anyone who would actually consider these needs a serious talking to.
well Fort Sill, Oklahoma is the home of the Field Artillery, close enough for OKC? About the show, never saw it, but it sounds pretty cool.
borderline? i believe it was full-on genocide, racism, etc... i have been to the apache and navajo reservations in the west and i suggest that every american do the same. it gives you a new perspective on the history of the united states. too often the indian is forgotten and considered a character from the movies... while millions still live in this country and their historical plight exceeds that of african americans'. naming sports teams after indians and their culture is simply disrespectful. you wouldn't call a team the new york n**ers, would you? redskins is the equivilent to that and the logo for the cleveland indians is merely an "blackface" indian characature. the only reason that these teams haven't changed their names is the fact that they have established a history with them and would stand to lose millions in marketing. i love my braves (possibly the least offensive logo/name of all american indian-related teams), but i understand why the name offends people and i would not be totally against a change.
The fans screaming "Near....FAR! Near....FAR!" The fearsome mascot, the Monster at the End of the Pitch! The CLEVELAND GROVERS will kick your asses 22 AND 24 ways!
If I may say something on this whole PC-racism-American Native Indian American-thing... The Native Americans (or what you will) don't need anyone's help for the purpose of achievement in sport. The Iriquois Nation does well every year at the Lacrosse World Championships...
PLEASE GOD NO In the name of all that is good and holy, in the name of humanity I beg you: Never repeat those two words together again.
