Expansion Draft will be held on this coming Friday.

Clint Demspey will be counted as senior player as he graduated from P-40, while Ritchie Baker and Felix Brillant will be counted as SI in the draft.

Too bad employment's spelled with an 'e.' :D

The one-day trade window interests me. Anybody think there will be any blockbuster moves going on?

Understanding the rules a little better now, I'll have to make some changes in my original assessment of how I think this should go. Protected players will get a #1-12

Senior Internationals as of 2005 - can only expose 1
    1. Jose Cancela
    2. Avery John
    3. Steve Howie
    4. Ritchie Baker
    Felix Brillant

    Adin Brown
    5. Clint Dempsey
    Joe Franchino
    6. Shalrie Joseph
    Brian Kamler
    Jay Heaps
    7. Marshall Leonard
    Carlos LLamosa
    Joe-Max Moore
    8. Pat Noonan
    9. Rusty Pierce
    10. Steve Ralston
    11. Matt Reis
    Kyle Singer
    Bobby Thompson
    12. Taylor Twellman

**Developmental Roster** No need to protect
    Perek Belleh - 22
Andy Dorman - 22 (also TI)
    Luke Vercollone - 22

Re: Expansion Draft is on Friday!!

As far as trade talk, The Washington Post reported a deal between the Metrostars and Fire involving Razov and others, obviously nothing has happened yet, but don't be suprised to see another team get in this deal, say Colorado. Also, 3rd Degree.net reported that Dallas was looking to deal two players. No word on the other team, which means it could be any of the teams besides D.C. and K.C.. With Dallas having an abundance in defenders, and only 3 SI's, the Revs might have a good oppurtunity to trade a player like Felix or Richie and Heaps for a defender, say Gbandi and a draft pick. (Remember, I'm just speculating, I have no prior knowledge of any moves any teams are making.) A move with NE wouldn't be surpising considering 3rd Degree didn't release the team or players in a deal that was in advance stages, playing right into the gameplan of the Revs not being very vocal on their moves.

I don't see how people keep Howie ahead of Brillant. What I saw of Howie was an over-the-hill defender who was two steps slower than his competition. He is beyond done.

Meanwhile, Brillant is a very young player with blazing speed. I think he'll play better next year. Doesn't Brillant's youth and upside count with anyone on this board? KEEP BRILLANT! His speed on the wing, the weakest part of the Revs, is worth continuing to explore. Could evolve into a Demarcus Beasle.

Sorry if I 've missed something or dreamt it, but I thought I read prior to the DC game that Baker had signed a 3 year deal with an Eircom league team? Is NE still obligated to count him as an SI if thats the case? Doesn't seem like they should but MLS rules do not always follow logic...........

Quite frankly, I have a hard time believing we'll see Baker, Brilliant, or Howey in MLS next season, and there is very little trade value considering their S.I. status for purposes of 2005.

    And JMM and Carlos L?

Damaged goods & of little trade value as well?

I see this as an opportunity for us to clear out dead wood, renegotiate contracts, if possible, on injured veterans and bring in new blood.

Re: Expansion Draft is on Friday!!

I would keep Brilliant over Howie assuming we have John and Pierce in the fold for next season, he is well past prime and not worthy of taking an SI slot. I would hope to see Cancela back as well IF its the player we saw at the end of the year and playoffs (although I guess that point could be made about the entire team). Heaps is expendable, although for whatever reason it occurs to me that this year's late season run coincided with his return to the line-up. Kamler's contributions were limited and frankly very disappointing it wouldn't leave a hole in my heart to see him in a different kit next year.

OK, I have finally had enough coffee and caught up with the rest of you... switch Brilliant and Howie and I am good with this, Coach Barry..... my only disappointment would be if some of the over the hill guys are NOT taken.....

Re: Expansion Draft is on Friday!!

Baker has denied the rumors about returning to Shelbourne, so for now he is still on the Revs roster and plans on playing for them next season. This may change if he is exposed (which I doubt because I think Howie will be exposed and if he isn't picked up the Revs will not pick up the option on his contract).

Thanks for that clarification.... I still think we keep ANY other current SI than Howie.... whether we are talking about production, team need, contribution, upside, potential.... anything!

I am sure there is a GREAT line out there about Howie already being exposed when he took the field this season.........

Well, yes, but to a degree: you're going to want some veteran leaders on the roster of Chivas or Real Salt Lake, and I wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility that one if not both could get picked up in the expansion draft if they're left unprotected. They just have more (relative) value to clubs other than the Revs at this point.

As for Baker? Well, I just don't see him beating out Ralston for playing time next season, and from everything I've ready, Richie wants consistent first-team action. While he is under contract for the remainder of 2004, I just have a sense that he will return to Shelbourne. My best guess is that he's going to wait and see how the expansion draft sorts itself out, and if not picked up, I could see him "loaned" out to Selbourne for the remainder of his contract (until Jan. 1, 2005), where he'd then return to his old club.

Howey's contract is up on January 1st as well, and I'd expect him to return to England where he might hook up with a lower-division club.

Re: Expansion Draft is on Friday!!

I can't speak for Coach_Barry as to what his strategy was in this case, but I think he's taken the right track on this. Everyone wants to expose Howie, but the odds of him being selected have to be slim. Since we have 5 SIs on our roster, and we probably won't be bringing all of them back, it makes sense to me to expose the one that we aren't likely to keep that stands the best chance of being selected. Baker or Brillant fit this bill, as they both were impact players at times and are both probably inexpensive. Since Baker has made noise about leaving, Brillant may be the better choice. If we protect him and don't keep him for next year, we gain nothing. If we expose him and he's selected, we then get to protect another exposed player.

    5. Adin Brown - contingent upon medical status, then keep Pierce

    8. Shalrie Joseph
    9. Pat Noonan

Re: Expansion Draft is on Friday!!

I'd actually expose Brown because there is a good chance neither team will pick him up. There is a good chance teams wont protect both of their goalies so a team like KC will have to expose Bo or Meola. So whenever one of players gets picked (Kamler, Heaps, or Franchino) we can then protect Brown.

Re: Expansion Draft is on Friday!!

I like Pierce's "competitive nature." I don't want to lose Rusty, but, it looks like we might lose a starter. I feel that Franchino is a better player.

The big question is, "What is the helath status of Adin?" Has he been concussed too many times? Will his groin heal? Are his injuries going to cause his retirement?

Or, is it the traditional MLS " no news shall see the light of day" and Shrek is back next year.

Franchino's nowhere near the player Rusty is. He's tenacious, but too slow and small to excel at left back or left mid.
