Just for fun, I thought I would come up with names for all the Expansion city candidates:

Atlanta: I have thought about this one more, since I am an Atlantan: Pumas (as long as we weren't sued for trademark infringement, but a good name considering the Blue Ridge Mountains just to the north),Wings (Busiest Airport in the World, bird mascots aplenty in ATL, and Lockheed factory located here), or Locomotives (I am sure wouldn't be considered, but Atlanta grew primarily because of its status as a railroad hub before, during, and after the Civil War. Kind of a take on Lokomotiv Moscow) Speaking of which, too bad Burn and Fire are taken...

Rochester: I would have to think they will stick with Raging Rhinos, don't you?? Any other ideas. I like The Rochester "Almost Canadiens"

Minneapolis, St. Paul: ThunderCats (hooo!!!) I don't really have a good one. Something understated like Twin Cities FC might be cool...I know, we aren't supposed to use those...

Cleveland: Lake of Fire F.C. :) I was going to say the Cleveland Cavlary...but I am guessing there are Cavaliers in a Cavalry, so never mind...Cleveland Infantry??

Philadelphia: Too bad Freedom is taken...Federals or Generals might be good

Houston Rovers (for the Lunar Rover). Houston Apollos might be good too...

Seattle Sasquatch (I guess they seem to like Sounders up there, but if we want to have fun with it, that is what I would pick, bring back that Harry fella for the home games.)

Tulsa, Oklahoma City: Alot of the good names for these cities were swiped by the USFL, but I would use them anyway, either Wranglers, Outlaws, Mustangs, or Stallions.

You guys can fill in the ones I sucked at...

Well, sorry dude, but Sasquatch REALLY sucks. Even MLS couldn't come up with anything that bad... or could they

And don't even get me started on that stupid Sonics mascot...

I knew there was something sublminal that led me to associate Seattle with Bigfoot!! You are right, I wasn't too happy with it, just thought I would put it out there...From what I gather, people like the name Sounders anyway. How about the Seattle Reign?? :)

    fun with names

    Atlanta Cannons

Rochester Ragin' Rhinos (also, possible stuffed animal tie-in for the Rally Rhino)

    Minneapolis You-betchas

    Milwaukee Timber Moose

    Cleveland Warthogs

    Philadelphia Gladiators

    Houston Apollos

    Seattle Grunge

    Tulsa Barnstormers

I agree, you can never reincarnate too many old USFL team names... Stallions, Bandits, Wranglers, Outlaws, Generals, Maulers, Renegades.

the Seattle Reign was a womens basketball team in the ABL so there is a possibility they still have the rights to that name.

Seattle Thunderbirds is a good one though, since seattle is famous for its weather. also goes along with seahawks which are both mythical native american animals

And is also the name of Seattle's minor league hockey team.

Don't mess with perfection, stick with the Sounders :)

If a team comes to MN you can be almost assured they will be called the Thunder.

The Twin Cities and Cleveland already have Football Clubs, they are calling the Vikings and the Browns.

GUARANTEED in this next round of expansion kind of kind of Dawg or Dog (Thunder Dogs, Valley Dogs, River Dogs, etc.)

    Atlanta Klan

    Rochester Iroqs

    Minnesota Timberdogs

    Milkwaukee Laderhosen wearers

    Cleveland Wife Beaters

Philadelphia Lovers (It's the city of Brotherly love!)

    Houston River Swimmers

    Seattle Asian Railroad Laborers

    Tulsa Cousinlovers

Hey, you forgot the Tulsa 3.2

Now that's decent name, culturally sensitive.

Sounds good to me. That'll work well with the ladies. Seriously though, Philidelphia Independents would work, especially with the Latino population(Independientes de Philadelphia)

These "name" threads are a guilty pleasure for me.

How would Oklahoma City fans feel about "Okies?"
Or, there's the Route 66 angle. US style could be "Route 66ers" while Euro style would be "Route 66 F.C." There's already a song, "Get your kicks on Route 66" and the white US route symbol makes a good badge.

Seattle, alliteration comes to mind. Sailors, schooners, salmon. Sea dogs, straits, seasick sea serpents.
If it's the A-league team's ownership, Sounders is best.

Raging Rhinos must be kept for Rochester.

Twin cities area: Geminis. Thunder ain't bad.

There should NOT be a team in Atlanta, the place is a terrible sports town.

i know, i've probally said this enough but if philly was ever to get a team, they should name them FC DELCO. If they were to get their own stadium they would have to make sure it is in Delaware County or in Philly, or just name them Philadelphia Atoms(NASL).
For Seattle- either Seattle Sounders or just Sounders FC. The fans should have a name they are familiar with, same with FC DELCO for Philly because people would know who FC DELCO is.

Atlanta: i think that atlanta couldn't support a mens soccer team. my dad use to live in atlanta and he told when he was growing up they had a team but it was there very long because the people dont really care that much about soccer. If they ever got a name either Atlanta Silverbacks(name from a-league team) or how about Atlanta Attack?? just an idea.

The team in minnesota, minnesota thunders.

dont really like thinking up other names for the other towns.

I agree with FC Delco...gotta go with what is already known....then all they need to do is get a relationship with the youth club, and now you have your first true soccer club in the US, from youth to professional....

No, calling ourselves the Okies would not go over very well. Being called an Okie is still a little bit of a sore subject.

Thanks for the original thought, where did you hear that, ESPN?? I am sure you are an Atlanta expert and all...

I am sure Grand Rapids can consider itself a great sports town with its rabid support for
Arena Football, but you state's metropolis of Detroit doesn't exactly pack them in for the Tigers, and didn't exactly go crazy over the Pistons in their mediocre years.

Not every city has fans like Chicago or Boston...in fact, those are the only 2 cities with fans like that...not even NYC is like that.

Actually Washington DC and Portland Oregon are pretty good sports towns.

As for names, I'm sure it would be the Sounders, but I kinda like the Seattle Schooners.

If you want illiteration, how about Atlanta Arsenal.

Detroit would probably be the Express, but I kinda like Detroit Dynamo.

I'd like to see a Rovers. It's a traditional name for the purists among us, yet close enough to a stupid american name to please the soccer smiles crowd.

We already tried that with the Atlanta Attack indoor team. It would be interesting, but I am not sure we could get around copyright rules, etc.

With all the snobs in the northern part of Atlanta, I would just kill 2 soccer mascot birds with one stone. Atlanta Range Rovers :)

    Midwest, the real one.
You know its nice to tie a teams name to something important in the city's history, but lets not get carried away. When you reach too far for a link, you end up with something like KC Wizards. I'm too embarrassed to explain where they got it, but there's nothing that keeps a soccer-basher at bay like a RAINBOW in your logo. So please, for your own sake, be careful with these names.
