That's the champion of post season MLS Cup Play-offs, not the league. Supporters Shield is much closer of winner of national league format that other leagues have. There's no bias in this as some suggested, Miami is the logical team based on previous cups, to play the opening game.
There is a precedence for this. For the 2000 Club WC, a spot would be awarded to the 1998 Campeonato Brasileiro, and back then the Brasiliero had a playoff system after its regular season. The champion being, of course, the winner of the playoff. Just like it is in MLS today. So, before saying we are ignorant, maybe check your history.
Except there was only 21 games played in that league without titulero, which Corinthians, also won...
The main league title is the MLS Cup. Ask any MLS fan. Chances are high that the LA Galaxy will once again miss out on the CWC in rather strange circumstances. First the 2001 edition in Spain got cancelled after they qualified, and now the very questionable selection of the host. But given all the rule bending that took place for the Gals early in MLS it's hard to feel sorry for them. Clubs don't have to release players for youth tournaments at all. Be it at the FIFA or confederation level. In any case, FIFA already clarified that participating clubs don't have to release players. Even for the senior team. So Concacaf national teams will have to do without CWC players for the Gold Cup.
23. But what does that have to do with anything? You wrote "Miami is the logical team based on previous cups". AFAIK, there is only 1 other situation like this before and it went the opposite way of what you claim with that statement. The bottom line is, the MLS champion is considered the winner of the MLS Cup playoff. These is no ambiguity. Its just a fact.
Agreed. It all seems very engineered just days before MLS Cup. They made sure it's a fait accompli. I'm not a MLS fan and even I am sick of Messi mania. So you have Miami - Al Ahly as the opening match. On one hand, you have arguably the biggest club outside Europe and South America in prestige and renommée. Founded in 1907 over a century ago, with 12 CAF Champions League titles and many more (official) international titles. They deserve every moment in a bigger spotlight. Then you have Miami. To date they have won a contrived, god awful excuse for a tournament (Leagues Cup) and the less important domestic league title.
Yes, but that wasn't the point here. The point of league champion is to award the best performing team of the year/season. And that was in 2000 Corinthians in both, and in 2024 Miami and LA Galaxy/NYRB. I would argue that Supporters Shield shows much better the best performing team of the year, than MLS Cup where you can be out in two games. Your analogy hardly makes sense.
Dortmund are standing tall in Group F. Ulsan are also in terrible form in the AFC Champions League (as are Al Ain for that matter). I predict it will get ugly for Auckland City.
I think Al Hilal are going to surprise a few people who don't follow the Asian game. Not to mention, Salzburg are having an awful season so far.
Well, this is shifting the goalposts. I agree that MLS has a dumb format, because it doesn't reward the best team with the championship. Nonetheless, that's how MLS does it. My analogy is just fine, thank you. Both leagues have/had playoffs and both considered their champion whoever wins the playoffs (whether they finished first during the season or not). The other (obvious) matter is that FIFA didn't announce how the host team would be determined for the 2025 CWC until the same day that the MLS regular season ended. What a coincidence!
Jordi Alba, glad you are able to chime in on this subject. I think most here would agree that having Miami in this tournament is purely a money grabbing marketing ploy. Miami's selection was the split-second decision of one person, the King of FIFA, who is trying to make relevant a tournament few see as necessary. There was obviously a lack of transparency as to what exactly that one person was basing it on since Miami didn't meet any of the merit-based requirements to be in this tournament that supposedly FIFA used to organize the event.
Hello everyone! I am new to this group. I am excited about the 2025 club world cup . My question is, how hard is it to volunteer because I am from philly and I am looking to volunteer for the very first time.
Here you go: https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments...lace,lawful%20U.S.%20resident%20or%20citizen* They haven’t said when the full schedule is released.
$17-$21M participation money: https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/we...sident/blt25bdd7c65e66d2ee#cs8c4ff9fbc4690720 That 50M figure tossed around was always utopian.
And here is the schedule link: https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/club-world-cup/usa-2025/articles/match-schedule-announced Miami with one game in Atlanta? Juventus at Audi Field?
It isn't, there wasn't any interim titulero in 2000 Brasileiro, and it wasn't recognized as back then. And that's because they just played 21 games, like I said. And there wasn't any need to even think one or other, as Corinthians won both.
Hmmm, interesting KO times for local TV Wydad Casablanca-17:00, 17:00, 20:00 RB Salzburg-00:00, 00:00, 03:00 Austria is only 1 hour ahead of Morroco.
Porto with 2 group matches in New Jersey. Makes sense given the big Portugueses community just 5 or so miles from the stadium.
Is there a large Argentine community in Atlanta? Is that the reason Miami is playing there? Not that I mind Miami losing a home (market) match. They shouldn’t be here in the first place.
Atlanta? No, not really. Florida/Miami has a bigger one. But I guess it's Messi so will sell out anyway.
