I think they were considering something like that initially. Not sure why they decided against it. Maybe as it would lead to fewer European countries having a team in this thing.
Yep, the reason teams like Barcelona and Liverpool are missing out is the country restriction. But I would argue that is one of the few positive aspects of the format.
anything is possible, but who cares about some stupid sport awards? in sports you win on the pitch/court/track ..... everything else is irrelevant
First sponsorship announced! Hisense becomes partner for new FIFA Club World Cup™ I have been thinking about the qualification rules and – while they’ve done a good job for the inaugural edition – I think it can be improved to help generate and sustain interest during the 4-year intervals. I favour a single FIFA CWC Ranking with clubs ranked according to the points they win in each continental CL over the previous 4 years (2 points for each win, 1 point for each draw and 4 bonus points each time a club wins its continental CL). At the end of the season preceding the CWC – so 2027/28 for the 2029 edition – the highest 31 ranked clubs qualify, irrespective of geography, in addition to the highest ranked club of the host country (or the highest ranked 32 clubs if they include a club from the host country). That would satisfy the sporting-merit requirement and treat every club fairly.
I wonder if that means China has appetite for football again. I could see the 2033 CWC being hosted there.
That's a good observation. Of course they were scheduled to host the original 24-team edition in 2021 which was cancelled because of the pandemic. Why not the 2029 edition?
Fifa in dispute with Adidas and Coca-Cola over Club World Cup sponsorship: https://amp.theguardian.com/footbal...e-adidas-coca-cola-club-world-cup-sponsorship Again, this is probably the reason FIFA packaged the 2025 CWC as a “new” competition and not just an expanded one.
I think 2029 is going to go to Morocco. Probably the best commercial outcome on the table and a chance to promote the competition to a sceptical Europe with close proximity.
🤩 ¡La final! @Botafogo y @Atletico definirán la CONMEBOL #Libertadores el 30/11 en Buenos Aires 🏆 pic.twitter.com/Doygk2q81t— CONMEBOL Libertadores (@Libertadores) October 31, 2024 Brazil will have four clubs at the CWC. The most of any league.
That makes a mockery of the arbitrary two-club cap. I 'm all for diversity but I think the qualify by ranking only system I suggested yesterday is fairer and would maintain the prominence of the competition during the 4-year intervals.
Didn't Mexico also have 4 clubs going to the CWC in Concacaf? EDIT: nvm, I just remembered that Seattle Sounders won once.
Not really. I think the 2-club limit is a good thing, but at the same time if a team qualified by ranking points over a team that actually won a CL title, that would be going ridiculously too far. This is a good balance.
I see @tombogert said on @herculezg’s latest podcast that MLS clearly told FIFA it wanted the MLS Cup winner to get the Club World Cup host spot, and FIFA ignored that. I second Tom’s reporting. Heard it weeks ago from a source who was not authorized to say it publicly.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) November 1, 2024 The rule that could let Cristiano Ronaldo participate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup: https://en.as.com/soccer/the-rule-t...he-2025-fifa-club-world-cup-n/?outputType=amp I fully expect to see Ronaldo on the Al Hilal roster for the CWC.
Apparently he has to get in line behind Neymar, who just bought a plot in Miami. But seriously, the contracts of both Ronaldo and Neymar are expiring in June 2025 just before the CWC.
Yes, it's good, but qualification exclusively by ranking with a live table updated each MD would sustain interest in the competition during the 4-yearly intervals. For example, Chelsea's win in the 2021 UCL seems too long ago to be relevant to a competition in 2025.
I love the "win and you are in" format. If all spots were over a four-year ranking, then smaller teams would have no chance.

Hilal paid €90mn for Neymar. He has barely played for them so far and his contract ends in a few months. Now there are strong rumors he will leave on a free in the January window. If we weren't talking about a Saudi club and Neymar it would be a very sad story.
Hopefully Miami in some elaborate salary budget exemption deal. Let them nurse him back to health. Over and over again.
It’s behind a paywall, but AB InBev second sponsor? https://www.sportbusiness.com/news/exclusive-ab-inbev-poised-to-sponsor-fifa-club-world-cup/
Inter Miami already eliminated in the first round of MLS playoffs. Here’s hoping they lose all three group stage matches in the CWC. They don’t belong in the competition and their presence is a commercial gimmick.
Most teams don't belong in that competition. Inter Miami is one of the best american teams. Three of the best teams were eliminated in the MLS playoffs. The MLS champion could be a 8th seeded team. A lot of teams in the club world cup don't belong there, but a team is required from North America. Inter Miami is the best club in the USA for the season. Of course that's what an object person would think and understand, but you're a biased clown so this message is only to correct your point.
First of all. I’m not a fan of using playoffs to determine a league champion. But that’s the format MLS chose, and that’s the winner that should “host”. It’s really not that difficult to grasp.
