The Confederations Cup is dead. The CWC has taken its spot on the calendar. In this case yes, the CWC serves as an organizational "test" of sorts. I'm starting to think Morocco may be favorite to host 2029 for the same reason. After that the CWC should stand on its own and, in any case, can't be hosted in Saudi Arabia in the 2033 summer. On a related note, Qatar gets to host the 2033 FIFA Arab Cup as well - which would have been the perfect "test" for Saudi Arabia 2034.
Club World Cup. Both are redundant (cash grabs), by definition, but CWC adds 5-7 fixtures for the players that are already playing the most and have the shortest summer breaks.
For me? The Leagues Cup - hands down. An absolute waste of space. The Club World Cup fulfills a sporting function replicated in no other competition. It crowns the world champion of club football, and has been doing so in one form or the other since 1960. Does it need to be such bloated format as per 2025? That is certainly up for debate. The Leagues Cup is a contrived and superfluous addition to the calendar with a truly unbalanced (i.e. unfair) format that is mostly a repetition of the Concacaf Champions Cup. Worse, it doesn't exist in a vacuum. Instead, being a "qualifying event" it further negatively impacts the Concacaf Champions Cup by skewing allocation numbers to a ridiculous degree. This year MLS had 10 spots and will do so again next year. Such a generous allocation for a single league has not been possible in any confederation's premier club competition in the entire history of the sport. Not even in Conmebol where allocation tends to be very kind to Brazil and Argentina.
Club World Cup, at least in its current form. Leagues Cup has no major pretense - there's no qualification to worry about (just exist in a participating league) and it serves as one of three subregional qualification methods to the regional championship. Current Club World Cup pretends to have the best clubs in the world, but most will be 2-4 years out of the qualification and will have noticeably different rosters than those qualifying teams, maybe even having dropped down their local ranks entirely, plus the qualification is insanely lopsided by region. If you want more inter-confederation play and properly in-form teams, smaller yearly tournaments (maybe every other year) would be so much better.

FIFA defiant over Club World Cup despite legal action: https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/202...ant-over-club-world-cup-despite-legal-action/ The details really should have been hammered out before the European summer break. FIFA (and the ECA?) spent way too much time talking to Apple.
FIFA should have received all of the media rights tenders by the end of the month so it should be possible to announce which channels it will be broadcast on globally by the end of October. The Apple negotiations were strange because as far as I am aware they want global exclusivity for the content they buy from rights holders but it is essential there is some FTA coverage of this initial edition for obvious reasons.
So when will the venues be announced? I mean if FIFA is serious, they should at least lock that part down, it's not like they don't know the region (East Coast). I think maybe they want to wait for the Gold Cup venues to be announced on the West Coast, but CONCACAF usually does that two months before hand. Hopefully they didn't get cold feet or something. I don't want the 2024 Copa America to be remembered as the last major soccer event we hosted before 2026.
Good question. They waited until December with this year's Copa America. The host team, which presumably gets to play at least the group stage in its home market, won't be known until December. MLS Cup isn't until December 7th, and if they engineer a playoff between that winner and the Supporters' Shield holder (all but wrapped up by Miami) then you have to add a few more days until the host team is known. I don't think they will just hand it to Inter Miami, as much as all parties involved would like that. They won't undermine MLS Cup that blatantly. Unless MLS Cup is won by a Canadian team, in which case they could conveniently argue it has to be an American side. I suppose they could just announce the venues with the exception of the three group stage games for the host team.
I wouldn't be suprised if they wait until this first international window is over and - when the focus returns to club football next week - they start to make a serious of announcements about the venues, competition schedule, date and venue of the draw, presentation of the new trophy and which channels will be broadcasting it. Since the end of the last club season the EUROs and Copa America, Olympics, UEFA club competition draws and this first international window haven't given them a window of opportunity to make significant announcements.
Players set to feature at FIFA's expanded Club World Cup next summer seek clarity over contracts set to expire midway through new-look tournament: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-13870355/amp/FIFA-Club-World-Cup-players-contracts-expire-tournament.html FIFA's Infantino calls emergency meeting with TV execs over lack of Club World Cup broadcast deal: https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/09/19/fifa-club-world-cup-broadcast-rights And that is why you don’t leave things until the last minute.
Another interesting bit: https://onefootball.com/en/news/fif...in-club-world-cup-amid-player-mutiny-40057895
https://en.as.com/soccer/fifa-call-urgent-meeting-over-2025-club-world-cup-n/ https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/sep/20/club-world-cup-host-cities-venues-fifa-tournament So looks like FIFA still hasn't got broadcasters yet but they reportedly have the venues. I guess they decided to go to the West Coast even though we have the Gold Cup going on there. Seattle makes sense for the Sounders to play some games at home, but I guess the Rose Bowl got it as compensation for not getting 2026 and in case an LA team wins MLS Cup. Plus I feel SoFi, BMO, or the Dig probably got chosen for LA for the Gold Cup already. Besides the Rose Bowl and Lumen Field, the rest are Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, and MetLife Stadium and Red Bull Arena in New York/New Jersey. I guess they're waiting for Inter Miami.
La final será el 18/12 en Qatar. pic.twitter.com/0p0FGAiH7M— VarskySports (@VarskySports) September 20, 2024 Not sure if this belongs here
So looks like they'll let those close to Qatar play at home and then everyone else has to travel. I guess that works, maybe they'll probably change the region in later editions.
So, semi-confirmed: 1. New Jersey - MetLife Stadium (82,500) 2. New Jersey - Red Bull Arena (25,000) 3. Pasadena - Rose Bowl (89,700) 4. Seattle - Lumen Field (68,700) 5. Miami - Hard Rock Stadium (64,700) 6. Atlanta - Mercedes-Benz Stadium (71,000) 7. Orlando - Inter&Co Stadium (25,500) 8. Philadelphia - ??? Which is it for Philadelphia? Subaru Park or Lincoln Financial Field. It's not clear in the article. And the "Red Bull dream" of Salzburg playing at the Red Bull Arena is alive! @Paul Calixte - at last you get some CWC games in your backyard. And if a team like Columbus gets the actual host spot then one more stadium will have to be added in that market. And they can't do that until December. And what if MLS Cup is won by a Canadian team?
This broadcasting and sponsorship situation is critical. Perhaps it would've been better to agree the deal with Apple TV and accept that there wouldn't be live FTA coverage and that would facilitate sponsors, although I don't know how large the Apple TV subscription base would be. The reported fee from Apple of USD$1bn might have seemed below expectations at the time, but now it might look quite good.
As for Philly, probably Subaru since they probably don't want an empty Linc if they want to balance out NFL and MLS stadiums. If they do go with the Linc, probably want to make sure the European teams play in NFL stadiums as much as possible. Maybe the Liga MX teams will have turnout but idk. Probably just gives it to the runner-up or highest ranked American team.
