It will be interesting to see how many Conmebol+CAF players in UEFA clubs will run out of gas on 2026 WC. That's 3 consecutive northern-hemisphere summers without a vacation, by July 2026.
Very difficult indeed. Especially when in AFC all the qualified clubs come from oil rich nations or the big clubs of ROK, Japan. So the ones getting the Euro 50mn are thr ones that need it the least. And I don't see that changing. And wake me up when someone other than Auckland City qualify from OFC. Similarly, cutting the divisions to 18 teams means less revenue for smaller clubs so that the rich clubs have more time to go out and rake in even more cash.
Not necessarily if there are proper solidarity mechanisms in place for premier leagues to distribute part of their revenue to lower divisions.
Such as? I'm with you on domestic League Cup in addition to FA Cup, but from the big nations only England insists on having two cup competitions now. France discontinued their League Cup. I also think domestic Super Cups played in faraway lands is a daft idea.
Now you're being overly harsh. I can think of several memorable IC/CWC matches in the last 40 years. Well, 30 years when I started watching.
Coming back to qualifying. Only three spots are left. This year's Libertadores winner, another Conmebol qualifier via ranking, and the host spot. In other news, Seattle could host CWC games in spite of the "East Coast" plan for the CWC: https://www.sounderatheart.com/2024/06/sounders-club-world-cup-host-payout/ Not surprising. I expected some FIFA meddling although I think only the host team should get games in their home stadium.
Really, now? The Boca-Milan showdowns weren't memorable? Corinthians-Chelsea wasn't memorable? Messi "scoring a goal with his heart" wasn't memorable? The best game Pep's Barça ever played (according to the man himself), that 2011 masterpiece against Neymar's Santos wasn't memorable? Hanauer saying out loud what I've wanted to articulate for a long time now in re: media speculation taken at face value. I still find it hard to believe that FIFA would settle for a geographical split with the Gold Cup.
A year to go until the Club World Cup in the United States: What’s going on? https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5544103/2024/06/07/club-world-cup-united-states-soccer/ (for those with access - sadly not me)
That's massive if goes through. And if it really does, the annoying Swiss-Qatari-African-Arab gay disabled migrant should leave. Along with his committee.
FIFA is probably going to entice teams to play in this thing. Just cause a manager reportedly says no a year before the tournament does not mean a thing.
That would almost certainly start a domino effect within UEFA. In this UEFA versus FIFA power struggle, one area where FIFA doesn't have a leg to stand on is that there are 12 UEFA teams partaking in the tournament. That's a lot.
Real Madrid insist they will go to Club World Cup after Ancelotti storm: https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...expanded-club-world-cup-warns-carlo-ancelotti
Yes, it is inconceivable that the club which won the UCL twice during the qualification period in 2022 and 2024 wouldn't participate.
Not to mention they are record club world champions with eight titles. A fact often stated proudly in Madrid. The old Intercontinental Cup was established in 1960, at least in part, due to Real Madrid’s dominance in Europe at the time.
I don't follow the finances of the game that closely, but seemed like he was pulling that number out of his arse. (?)
If I understood it correctly Ancelotti said Real gets 20 million for a friendly match. I think that's right out of his arse or the Spanish IRS is going to have another look at the books of Real.
Yeah, even if 75k fans pay $200 per ticket, that's "only" $15 mn and 2 teams have to split that (minus costs of course). If the match is played in Spain you can divide that ticket price by about 4. I guess there would be other sources of revenue but its not like you are gonna strike some massive TV deal for a friendly.
Some of those are stretches. Barca v Santos? Sure, there was a lot of hype. The best player in the world versus "the next one". But much like Neymar's career, the match didn't live up to that hype. Neither Neymar nor his team were able to get anything going so it ended up looking a lot like a Man City v Fulham game. There are at least 4-5 EPL matches every weekend that are more entertaining.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ & 2029 media rights tender launched: https://inside.fifa.com/about-fifa/...2025-tm-and-2029-media-rights-tender-launched I suppose that means the Apple deal is definitely dead.
Has the host team for the Club World Cup been picked yet?Don Garber: "Not yet. We've made a bunch of suggestions to FIFA ... It will be an MLS team and we've got a lot of options."Options include the MLS Cup winner, Supporters' Shield winner, a game between them, and more.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) July 24, 2024
lol What a joke it is to wait until after the completion of the competition or late in the competition to determine what team from that competition will be selected.
