In Los Angeles MLS stadiums maybe it could have done okay but yes the atmosphere would not be that good.
As I alluded to weeks ago, this Columbus team seems like a team of destiny. Great win in Mexico. Clearly the better team over two legs. Obviously the biggest win in Crew history and arguably the biggest result in MLS history. (I know Seattle won the whole thing but this one feels almost earth shattering and CONCACAF altering. Huuuuuge win.)
I don’t know about better team, Monterrey was in cruise control until the series changing keeper blunder, but they earned it afterwards. Pachuca-Columbus it is in the Concacaf final.
Great teams take advantage of dumb mistakes by opponents and make them pay. First game could have been a lot uglier too. Monterrey was lucky Cucho did not score a couple more in Ohio. They were also fortunate not to give up at least one more this evening. Over the two matches Columbus was clearly better.
I suppose it’s all a matter of perspective. I saw Monterrey comfortably advancing with (nearly) three halves played between the two. That blunder changed everything and Rayados had to take a lot of risks thereafter. But there is no point speculating. Congrats to the Crew. If they beat Pachuca I will certainly tip my hat.
You obviously did not see the first two halves then. And all four halves they could not really stop Cucho. They did a pretty good job of slowing him down a bit in Mexico but he still had lots of good hold up play and was driving them bananas with his passing and dribbling.
It would be quite the feat. Everyone should tip their cap. An MLS team going undefeated in Mexico with an unprecedented road to the FINAL, not losing at all in three Mexican Stadiums and playing on the road in stupid one legged Final? It would be like nothing we have ever seen before. Not saying they are automatic cause Pachuca is not bad at all. However, this Columbus team will not be afraid of them at all and know they can win pretty much anywhere.
FIFA is like Columbus? Oh no. Maybe they can play some matches in Cleveland but even then the Crew fans would at most fill the NFL stadium up half way. Pachuca is not going to fill up many stadiums either but at least some Mexicans would join the bandwagon just to cheer for a Mexican team against other continents.
I don't even know how one makes such a blunder. I mean, we've all kicked a ball and it didn't go where we wanted, but how to you throw a ball right to an opposing player? Between the poor conditions of the pitch, the conservative tactics, the overall slowness of the game (all 22 players on the field would literally just stop moving at times) and the mistakes this was the worst football match I've watched in a while from a quality standpoint.
Gotta give some credit to Morris for anticipating it and scoring a cold blooded goal, Most MLS players in that situation or similar situations would have missed that chance or shot it to the moon. Wilfried Nancy has this team level headed and confident in key situations.
Just realized that Columbus may be without a bunch of stars due to International Camps preparing for friendlies and Copa/Euro Cup/ WCQ. How stupid would that be if the result of the Final comes down to that.
He honestly thought all the Crew players were just going to put their heads down, jog back, and not notice the underthrown pass... as a certain Mexican TV legend used to say, "no contaron con mi astucia" Doesn't FIFA already make an exception to its window for continental finals (specifically, the UCL Final)? No reason they shouldn't extend the same favor to Concacaf...
Just depends on if they go through with the June first re-schedule. All signs point to that, but you never know. Columbus is scheduled to play Seattle that day. If I were MLS I would say no thanks. (Not saying they would say that but why should MLS bow down and reschedule one of their premier matches on the calendar cause of Mexican Politics?)
By the way Inter Miami is now rumored to be interested in adding Di Maria. My latest how to sneak in Inter Miami into this tournament conspiracy is giving them the home slot if they clinch the "Supporters Shield." (most points in the season) Which will make many people angry but hey, FIFA is keeping everything under wraps as to how the host team will be selected so any theory is a good theory at this point.
I watched both matches in their entirety. And for me that means getting up pretty early in the morning.
It would be historic. No doubt about it. I think the one legged final is as stupid as the next guy, but also somewhat amusing in the context of the unfair Leagues Cup format which some MLS fans just seem to shrug off.
The international window starts June 3. The election just forced them to shift the final from June 2 to June 1. They would have had to reschedule the Crew's league game for that weekend regardless.
A tired Pachuca (48 hours rest) made it all the way to penalties agains Pumas - but lost. They have one more chance to advance to the Liguilla quarterfinals. I like that from Concacaf no club will qualify based on ranking. All will be CCC winners.
