Yeah, I'd love to see Higs remain substantively connected to the club. I could see him in a coaching/player position associated with a new USL club, for example.
Steffen is out injured. Missed last week and will miss this week. Which messes up my fantasy team--and for my goal slots I picked all three Duesseldorf keepers, just in case. So who's playing? Number four. Ugh.
2006 Jonny Walker started the season injured so... Busch began as the starter for 8 games before suffering an injury. With backup Bill Gaudette already injured, Andy Gruenebaum subbed in for the game Busch got injured. Popik was signed and started against DC. Then was released. Team traded for Noah Palmer (sending Duke Hashimoto to RSL) and he played 10 games Dom Jakubek is signed to back up Palmer - dresses but does not play for the Crew Bill Guadette takes over in July, playing the next 11 games. Andy Gruenebaum then starts the final two games. That's seven goalkeepers that were signed for the season. Five made appearances. I have fond memories of the unique terribleness of that 2006 team.
Who wouldn't? Featuring the likes for Ivan Becerra, Joel Kitamarike, and Ryan Coiner we were something to behold, and feared across the league. Opponents could barely keep a straight face.
2006 was a very memorable year. For instance that year was the last one where we stood in 137. CU moved to 103 for 2007.
Are you sure? I remember that being 2008, when all 3 major supporters groups got mashed together in the North Corner, and the results on the field skyrocketed (as a consequence or a pleasant coincidence).
And somewhere in there, the team traveled to New Jersey where Jon Busch let in an absolute howler of a goal from somewhere near midfield, IIRC.
There was soooo many games when the Crew print ads would mention: "Come see ______ and the ______ take on your Columbus Crew this Saturday." Of course, the blanks were the featured player and the opponent's team because our team was somewhere between dog feces and elephant dung. But hey...at least we got a bonus game at the end of the season vs some second-division Guatemalan team.
In the Hammer's defense, he was used to playing on grass. The Giants stadium turf was harder than grass and the opposing keeper's punt bounced over Andy's head and into our goal.
Yeah the Crew had a Landon Donovan bobblehead promotion. That's the only time I've heard of a team doing a promotion for a player not on their roster.
Weren't those MLS sponsored, not Crew per-se? I have a Donovan, Cobi Jones and Valderrama along with the Stern John, McBride and Friedel ones - plus Crew Cat.
As a matter of fact, yes it did. As always they had big boxes full of them on tables at the gates, but when someone tried to take one they'd blow a whistle and say "NO TOUCHING MR VALDERRAMA"
When I was 7 my parents took me to the ‘98 MLS All Star game in Orlando and we made a Disney vacation out of it. We walked passed Valderrama on the Disney boardwalk and I somehow completely missed it.. To this day I have no idea how I didn’t see him.
