Even though Reis has been solid for years...

    He's been solid for YEARS.

The guy is what, 37 or 38? Technically old enough to be the father of players like Rowe and Fagundez.

Don't get me wrong, Matt Reis has been the saving grace for this Revolution side for many a year, but I can't help but feel he's lost a bit of his game... The first TFC goal was bread and butter for the Reis of '05, lets say.

I'm not saying we need an immediate replacement, he's still got his soccer brain, however, it might be a good idea to pick the BEST GOALKEEPER available in the draft, or sign one for cheap-ish money with a big upside.

I think the Revs are aware of Reis' eventual retirement, and also that Shuttleworth isn't the answer - they actually opted into the lottery for David Bingham last year but didn't get him. I wouldn't be surprised if they drafted a goalie next offseason, especially if LB and 2nd forward are somehow addressed during the summer window.

Well I was going to say Cervi...but apparently he is in line to join the Galaxy. Sorry if someone else mentioned it first.

I'm not sure how many more years Reis has left in him, but I guess it would make sense to draft a kid and start developing him now. Maybe Bobby will be the stop gap until the new kid is ready, although I would like to see the Revs actually try to pick up a free agent GK instead of starting Bobby.

That article is practically two months old and from a fairly unreliable website. I'd assume that Cervi would be subject to either the returning USMNT allocation order, or to a weighted lottery similar to Nguyen. Although he's never been officially capped by the senior NT, he's been called into several camps and has played at the youth level.

A good point! The only other articles I could find were from the Sun...we all know the Sun isn't exactly #1 for accurate news. Is there really a chance he would be subject to allocation???

Cervi is an unknown quantity, never capped with Celtic & has only played 7 games in 4 years, all in the Scottish First Division while on loan for the first part of last season - 3 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses; 8 goals allowed. Went out on loan to Dundee (also Scottish First Division) for 2nd half of '10-'11 season and didn't get any games.

There's a decent chance. Luis Robles was close to joining RBNY earlier this season until they were notified that he would be subject to the allocation order. He has a similar resume to Cervi, the only difference being that he has one senior NT cap.

It's difficult to find information on it on the MLS site. All I can see is:

surely a 'U.S. National Team player' doesn't include youth levels? I remember that there were like 5 pages of discussion on allocation order when Ryan Guy signed, but I didn't read them.

I believe the initial question was 'why is he not subject to allocation order when ______ was?'

Nope. I think the debate was about why FC Dallas didn't still have his rights, since he was drafted by them before going overseas.

This really is worth reading again before continuing the discussion about Cervi and allocation spots. IMO, he's only worth mentioning if 1) allocation isn't involved and 2) he can be brought in for very little $. I have seen very little of him but I'm pretty sure there's a reason that he was regularly a DND.

Even Greenock Morton fans saw "very little of him".

Maybe Shuttleworth will be more than a stop-gap. We won't know until he's had a good long string of games under his belt. So far, in sporadic action, he's been okay - not standing on his head, but not a sieve either.

There have been a lot of starting level keepers in MLS who looked pretty ordinary (or worse) in spot duty, until they were handed the keys to the car. We don't have to look much further than Reis, who was a career backup (even if he was more of a 1B than a #2) until we got him. He proceeded to play the best stretch of his career once he got regular duty.

    I-an-Feu-er! Drum drum drumdrumdrum!

Jeff Causey might still be a better keeper than broadcaster!

I'll ask him when I see him again. He's a funny guy and we should get a humorous line out of him.

Ian's a good guy. He even remembered the blues guitarist who used to play outside the Matchens Stadium on match days when he played for Racing Molenbeek (RWDM). He was an American guy named TT Fingers. He only had 2 out of 10 fingers, but was an amazing guitarist. He could hold the pick in one hand, and use his wrist on the neck as a slide.

I guess that's not the kind of guy you would forget.

Douggie Warren was at the Seattle game, btw - Just speaking of past keepers. he was walking around with a bunch of kids during the pre-game shenanigans. Was there an announcement made or anything? Was his presence completely ignored?

Why? He sucks. Reis is old and his timing, communication and decision making isn't what it used to be this season but he's a far superior shot stopper to Shuttleworth.

I'll agree with this. I think I've seen enough (IMHO) of Shuttleworth that he's not going to be a #1 at this level going into the future.
