It is only a matter of time folks. Too many domestic leagues are essentially uncompetitive. And the $$$$$$$$$ being left on the table by the big clubs is YUUUUGGGEEE! https://www.football-italia.net/121817/agnelli-proposes-new-champions-league
That explains why teams like Bayern and PSG look very average in the Champions League against the likes of Real and Barca. Bayern and PSG can play their B teams for all their domestic league matches and would probably win 80% of them. The gap between themselves and Borussia Dortmund and Olympique Marseille, their two respective historical rivals, isn't showing signs of shrinkage.
That's pretty incredible that Juve can in all likelihood win 10 scudetti in a row! This is the kind of domination that used to happen in backwater leagues like Greece, Turkey, or Scotland. It serves to emphasize how the Old Lady is monopolizing the best talent in Italy and how disorganized and cash-strapped her rivals are. It's funny how in international football that smaller nations such as Croatia are able to compete at the highest level while in the club game it's just a handful of teams who can harbor realistic ambitions of winning titles.
Berlusconi thought up this idea 25-30 years ago as he wanted his Milan team to be global. I am not sure if the domestic federations would allow it but then again for money, I'm sure UEFA and also FIFA will love the idea.
Well that's gospel truth, but I think UEFA in particular would hate the idea because it would basically render the CL a bit redundant. League competition is obviously different from a knockout competition, but the major selling point of the CL is the chance match-ups between the major European clubs. A league where that happens every weekend would lessen it as a selling point for UEFA. And that they would not like, at all.
Maybe but then the Super League would in the long run bring more interest , sponsors and money as opposed to a knockout tournament. When you are down to 16 teams and only 29 games from February until May, that isn't all that many. Especially when you a 20-24 team league playing weekly games plus potential playoff rounds if they play that type of format.
Yeah but if they are smart they will use UEFA to "run" the league since no national FA will be involved. Co-opting is usually the best strategery for neutralizing a potential foe.
The CL was formed to prevent a Super League from forming. It was a way to give those big clubs the competition, prestige & money they were seeking.
Yes but.......the time is coming where the big clubs are going to demand more. They already modified it to allow the big leagues more teams. How long before these teams get almost cemented in as they outspend their domestic rivals and take their players? At some point the moolah is going to get too big to ignore and we will get a Super Duper League of the top Euro teams and maybe the CL will revert to being a Cup Comp like it originally was.
That is down the road. The hold backs right now are probably the English sides since they make a lot of money.
They do. But they will make even more in a league like that. And the rest of the league will take a step back, just like the Championship did when the Prem was formed. Win/Win for those in "the Club".
Only problem with a super league is will it be like an MLB/MLS/NFL/NHL/NBA/MLB where no teams are promoted or relegated? That wouldn't be quite fair to the teams who would one day want to join in. Not that it would happen but I remember Parma was a powerhouse of a club throughout the 90's and early 2000's and they could have easily been considered a top Euro club. If and when then happens again , can a team like them join the Super League?
That means Roma and Lazio won't ever get in! How can you have a Euro Super League without an Italian capital city club?
Simple, you have a league without a club from the Italian capital city. It is the club that counts, not the city.
Not so sure. A European Super league brings traveling players and fans. Players always want to be in the big towns. When I lived in Italy for example , after Juventus, most players wanted to play for either Milan, Inter, Lazio and Roma because these were the two most happening towns for the twenty somethings. When someone in Moscow thinks of Italy, they usually think of Milan and Rome. They rarely think of Turin or Naples. Same with someone coming from Madrid , Barcelona , Munich or Berlin. Aside from playing for their storied clubs, I doubt most players like living in Manchester as opposed to London.
Times and fortunes change how do you think that the league will stay elite when a few owners mail it in with nothing to lose? The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals are good examples from the NFL and the Clippers and Timber Wolves in the NBA, that some teams go on long runs of bad form and drag everyone down with them. Rewarding success only provides for the Juves (no complaints believe me} Real Madrids and Barcelonas to beat up on the little guys and no matter where you start the cream always rises to the top and in a decade it's the same suspects on the podium every season.
