Kane is team captain and all time leading scorer. I think he will start the next game.

If the team captain can be substituted then he can be dropped period. You're probably right he will start.

We all know Southgate rarely changes anything unless he's forced to. So yes I expect Kane to start but hopefully substituted early if he's ineffective as he has been in recent games. Watkins' goal makes that more likely, perhaps.

There has been many late goals in this competition so if we're ahead with one minute to go I'll take nothing for granted until the final whistle.

Didn't say you can't, mate. Just that it's easier to envision Spain winning it, as they've been - and basically are - better. But I'll be watching on Sunday and pulling for England. I'd love to be proven wrong. It happens enough that I won't be shocked.

Speaking of suggestive - yet utterly meaningless - stats, though, here's an interesting one:

Since May 2001, Spanish teams – at both club and national level – have played non-Spanish teams in 22 major finals. "The Spanish side has won all 22."

I can't vouch for the veracity of that ... I just read it somewhere. But if true, that's extraordinary. Determines nothing on Sunday, of course ... but hell, that's crazy.

As I recall you thought we'd lose the quarter and the semi.

    Yup.

I don't remember saying that about the semi, but had I been asked, I'd've thought it likelier than a win.

A little lucky with the penalty but this time we ahd the rub of the green as so often it has gone against us. The hand of God, Sol Campbell's good goal disallowed, Frank Lampard's against Germany and Beckham seeing a red for a minor offence. All bad luck against us. You said "You" about us pooks so what nationality are you? None of my business and you can tell me to do one but just out of interest.

I'll be rooting for England, just so poor Harry can get that monkey off his back. Hope he has a good final for once.

I hope he does if it means we win something. I sincerely hope I'm proved wrong.

I expected them to be home a week ago and I'm happy to have been wrong. I'll be even happier to be wrong again tomorrow.

American, me. Always been an anglophile when it comes to footy, though. 1970 World Cup is when it started. Spurs since sometime closer to '74. Anyway, I never even knew the USA had a national team until the 80s, so it was always England for me.

I've come to enjoy the US men's team, and have seen them live dozens of times. It's all good fun, but in the end, neither of them matters. I'll be pulling for England tomorrow and would love to see them win. But if they lose, it won't hurt. If the USA loses, it doesn't hurt.* When Spurs lose, though, depending on how and to whom, it can eff my day up beyond reason. Spurs matter. This is all just a pleasant distraction.

*well ... maybe a bit if it's to Mexico.

If we win this I suppose Southgate should stay shouldn't he? Be a bit strange if we win it, he resigns and a new coach comes in.

Nice effort from England. Tough loss. Better team won.

Expected Spain to win and they were the better team. Truthfully England rode their luck to even be there and that luck ran out tonight. Absolutely zero ability to get the ball to forward players; Watkins 30 minutes starved of service showed to me that Kane may have been subpar it was lack of service from the midfield.

Said it after the first game, needed someone like Madders there.

I’ve come to accept, much like Spurs, England will always fall short at the final hurdle.

Echoes of the 2019 CL final when Poch played an unfit Kane when Moura was finding the net. It's always "Must play Kane" with these coaches and I don't know why. Anyway, I see a good future for England. But nobody will win anything with Kane out there. Bayern I hope see this for their sake.

Watkins had 30 minutes and zero shots on goal. It wasn’t Kane that was the problem.

Do I want more people talking about curses? No. No, I don’t, because I live in the 21st century where the concept of curses is a children’s fantasy on the same level as unicorns and the boogie monster.
