Combined Gazzetta, Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Corriere dello Sport, Kicker, L'Équipe, Made in Foot (Ouest-France).

In the final matches Spanish and British sources were also included.

Yes, maybe it is unusual for no obvious choices to be centre forwards, or at least second strikers (maybe not so unusual in the modern game though, while in 1994 World Cup probably I had 6 such forwards among the top dozen players at the end: R.Baggio, Romario, Bebeto, Stoichkov, Bergkamp, Klinsmann). I included Depay in my XI, and it wouldn't really seem right to place Gakpo as CF or F9 instead because that's really not the role/position he has been playing in.

In theory I guess I could place Musiala as a false 9 (or him and Olmo as two false 9s, or two advanced forwards/midfielders) since he was floating around and changing position and not playing like a true winger anyway, and then put Gakpo on the left of my XI, with no Depay. Although equally I guess I could make a midfield 3 of Kante-Rodri-Ruiz and a forward 3 of Yamal-Olmo-Musiala, or I could have Olmo as the false 9 and put in De Bruyne instead.

It seems to me like l'Equipe (as well as using a wide range of scores frequently, like some Argentinian sources tend to do too and unlike mostly the Italian ones) probably use 5 as the 'average'/standard score rather than 6. It actually seems more typical for them to go towards the bottom of the range than the top even though perhaps.

I'd still feel like some grades are surprisingly low anyway - I said that about Schouten vs Romania already I remember (seeing a 4 grade) and now I notice as one other example Baumgartner vs France getting 3....

I think you have a preview page (with the squad numbers rather than ratings) shown for Austria vs the Netherlands actually mate, inserted as one of the pages (maybe you also have the one with ratings available). Great work with all your postings anyway, from various places (also for the older tournaments - you have already become one of the best sources on the forum for these things I'm sure!).

Great, 'we' are happy to have the contributions I can say for all of us I think. Of course the 'you' in your post is also a collective one - not me personally (even if I also contribute some things in the various threads); often it has been @comme starting the threads off (sometimes other guys though) and then various others chipping in to help.

Many 'experts' here and also the southern neighbors agreed Schouten played well, also when outnumbered in midfield. The one not playing well was Veerman (in most games and phases of a match), not Schouten or Reijnders. Those did what they had to do. Individually strong. Simons came through as the tournament progressed, the last three games, not the first three. It has been turned inside-out and that is the verdict (I'd say yes he looked tense in an orange shirt). I cannot disagree.

The very low average grades for Schouten are absurd and imho a good indication of what we are up against the last 25 years. With better officiating he plays the final, I am more and more convinced (like you said yourself, there was a scene where Gakpo was tripped with a high leg, to prevent him bursting through on goal). Veerman, as said, not good, especially the Austria match with 29 touches and 16 losses of the ball (and in France late sub in because he was on a yellow). Not like how he played in Europe, the Champions League or against Germany (in Germany) earlier this year with about five-to-seven starters missing against a full-strength Germany team.

Yes, I feel like specifically for that Romania match at least I would have rated Schouten significantly higher, and Dutch players higher in general (Reijnders for definite too). For the England match maybe I wouldn't immediately dismiss what Chizzy was saying re: the defensive side (I didn't study closely the reasons why England AMs were finding spaces, but for sure put it at least down in part to England's best performing period of the tournament, whether I was hasty to say 'their best football since vs Netherlands 1996' or not), but in the opening match for example too I felt the Dutch midfield was good, at least with the ball.

Yeah, I didn't see much of Veerman but thought his reputation (of the available players in midfield, excluding FDJ of course) was the highest, even if apparently Reijnders had a very good season with Milan. Some of the Veerman set-pieces were good and promising, but aside from that I guess we didn't see much of what he is thought to be good at during the tournament.

EDIT But yes I think the Walker trip on Gakpo (even after a legitimate first tackle) could/should have resulted in something to be fair, and I would still tend to see the Dumfries attempted block as legitimate and not a penalty even if his leg is straight (I think he doesn't exert force on Kane or big force towards Kane and it's more Kane following through onto him, even if I understand the theory of not making an intimidatory challenge or leaving a leg in a place and in a way where the opponent can likely injure himself after playing the ball - I just feel it's a stretch to penalise him in this case and in the 'old days' (when reckless challenges were still frowned upon) I think it would be seen as not more than an unlucky collision probably and not with many complaints - Chrstina Unkel at least seemed to feel it still should be seen like that now in effect though anyway according to the new rules and interpretations). Having said that, and not wanting to drag up 2022 again, or seem anti-Argentine (see my post saying Kempes is an admired player, enthusiasm about finding out about Pedernera and suchlike), for me I'd tend to see less strange decisions or non-decisions regarding fouls in England-Netherlands this year than Argentina-Netherlands in 2022 I think....(conspiracy or no conspiracy, just going by the actions that occured)....

I was able to input the L' equipe ratings, so kindly shared by @Kroos46, to my spreadsheet. As this newspaper rates very low, most of the players lower their average, some of them exaggeratedly so. Now, these are the best ratings:

    1.- Mamardashvili: 7,60
    2.- Lamine Yamal: 7,54
    3.- Dani Olmo: 7,48
    4.- Fabián Ruiz: 7,42
    5.- Musiala: 7,31
    6.- Donnarumma: 7,30
    7.- Rodri: 7,29
    8.- Nico Williams: 7,18
    9.- Oblak: 7,18
    10.- Xhaka: 7
    11.- Pepe: 6,93
    12.- Gakpo: 6,93
    13.- De Bruyne: 6,92
    14.- Lobotka: 6,92
    15.- Carvajal: 6,91
    16.- Cucurella: 6,91
    17.- Nuno Mendes: 6,89
    18.- Guler: 6,89
    19.- Eriksen: 6,87
    20.- Mikataudze: 6,87
    21.- Sabitzer: 6,86
    22.- Maignan: 6,85
    23.- Wirtz: 6,83
    24.- Casteels: 6,82
    25.- Vitinha: 6,82

Pepe and Casteels are two of those who have benefited the most from the addition of this source.

No idea about the other indexes but SC shows this for Larsson and Muller respectively (Larsson is actually the top rated player for 2004, with his team reaching QF and losing on penalties). He was however almost 37 in 2008 and thus a bit older than Muller now.

    1994: 6.98
    2000: 7.13
    2002: 7.48
    2004: 7.88
    2006: 7.05
    2008: 7.10

    2010: 7.73
    2012: 6.62
    2014: 7.66
    2016: 7.07
    2018: 7.10
    2021: 6.80
    2022: 6.80 (again)
    2024: 6.75

Larsson was a little bit younger in 2004 as Muller is now, close to a year. He was then 33 (20 september 1971). Muller is now 34 (13 september 1989).

One of Van Gaal his former pupils says goodbye (moving Schweinsteiger at the age of 25-26 to central midfield, while previously an erratic and not-so-great winger, was also a strong move and maybe the more defining one). David Alaba is still playing.
