Results so far: Austria 2-3 Czech Rep. Hungary 1-2 Poland Sweden 0-1 Latvia Latvia stuns Sweden today with this 1:0 victory on the road and have clinched second place and are now into the playoffs. This is Sweden's first loss in a major qualifying campaign since 1997. Poland and Hungary are eliminated. Germany 3-0 Iceland Scotland 1-0 Lithuania Germany does the expected and wins the group. Scotland gets a late goal by the youngster Fletcher and jumps into second and will be in the playoffs. More final results from today: Cyprus 2-2 Slovenia Bosnia-Herz 1-1 Denmark Norway 1-0 Luxembourg Bosnia-Herz fell just short of Portugal in 2004 after giving up an early goal and was only able to come back with one when they needed to win. Norway's victory over Luxembourg puts them into the playoffs (in the head-to-head tiebreaker over Romania) and Denmark has won the group and has qualified for the Finals. Armenia 0-4 Spain Greece 1-0 Northern Ireland Although Spain won by four on the road over Armenia, Greece's 1:0 triumph over Northern Ireland at home has clinched first place for the Greeks and now Spain will have to enter the playoffs. Russia 3-1 Georgia Switzerland 2-0 Rep. of Ireland A disappointing ending for the Rep. of Ireland as they are the team that is now eliminated. Switzerland wins the group, and Russia will enter the playoffs. I was expecting a lot more from Turkey-England match...people were saying before that it would be the game of the year.... well after watching it, i'd have to say it was the game of the year alright, but for utter crapness!! I already sense Euro 2004 will be a dud as far as quality of football. Look at the team's that have already qualified....Greece, Germany, Denmark, Bulgaria, Sweden, England, Italy,...with France, Czech Republic and (maybe) hosts Portugal providing attractive football for the automatic qualifiers. Then you've got Wales, Scotland, Latvia, Russia, Slovenia, Croatia and Norway all chasing Turkey, Holland and Spain for the playoff spots. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the latter three would face each other to ensure UEFA's dream of killing attacking minded football. Club football 10 times superior to national play. Carry on.
All results are in and these teams have qualified: Portugal, France, Denmark, Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany, Greece, England, Bulgaria, Italy, Switzerland. And these are the playoff team: Slovenia, Norway, Netherlands, Latvia, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, Croatia, Wales, Russia. The playoff draw takes place on Monday.
Who wants to bet that Spain, the Netherlands, Turkey, Norway, and Croatia don't play each other in the playoffs? I know they say that they won't seed teams but it always seems to work out that the highest ranked teams are seperated from each other. Just for the record here are the the teams going into the draw on Monday with thier FIFA rank: 3 Spain 7 Netherlands 8 Turkey 23 Croatia 25 Norway 28 Russia 33 Slovenia 53 Wales 53 Scotland 73 Latvia
Norway outclassed mighty Luxembourg 1-0 tonight in Oslo. That's our only goal scored in the last five internationals. Spain, Holland and Turkey. Prepare for hell!
