Even if it isn't, Brugge will nix the move. They won't want their bitterest rival strengthened. Holland, France, Scandinavia, no problems, but they'll demand a high transfer fee for any Jupiler League rival. Doubly for Anderlecht

    Karlo Letica - SPAL
Another talented player on loan is Karlo Letica. With the arrival of Simon Mignolet and Ethan Horvath remaining, there was no playing opportunity for the young Croat at Club Brugge. He hoped to find it at the Italian SPAL.

Not the right choice, it turns out. The young talent was quickly put aside and has not played a single minute so far. The goalkeeper is weekly on the bench at the Italian club.

Since Mignolet is incontournable at Club Brugge, he should not immediately hope for a new chance at Blauw-Zwart. A new loan or a final departure seems to be the result.

He's made the bench for every game in Serie A, but that ain't much. SPAL routinely have 7 or more subs on the bench, including 2 substitute GKs.

Agreed. It's been crystal clear that, no matter what the game is, if Mignolet is fit he will start and go 90'. Ethan was never going to get any PT unless the guy got sick or injured.

In fact, you could even argue that the virus-imposed lockdown is good for Ethan: this way he can't get injured in training, so he'll be in perfect shape come July 1st.

Not playing him in cup games is dumb. Clubs do that to keep the second keepers sharp but also to raise some interest in them. It's not a bad plan to regularly cycle second keepers, before they lose all value.

At this point, no one has seen Ethan in a competitive game in a long time, who is even going to remember him? Never playing him means they don't care about giving him a way out, Bad, bad practice.

Some fans: Only by facing competition for their spots in Europe will our players become truly elite!

Also some fans: Our guy got benched, WTF, it's just not fair!

And not any further out of match fitness than he would have been anyhow.

little bit of a strawman in this case.

    1) Usually talking about field players here. It's pretty rare for teams to rotate goalkeepers. You either got the spot or you're behind someone that has to lose it by poor play on the field.

    2) We're talking about a top club in Belgium paying over market value (IMO) for a national team #1. It's not normal competition. Not even close.

    FYP.

Top-level sides rarely "rotate" their GKs, but they're usually very careful to ensure that a relaible #2 is guaranteed some PT by making the #1 GKs fixtures in league and non-dead rubber European ties while the #2s start in domestic Cup games until the semi- finals, and sometimes even beyond. They do it to keep #2s match-fit, motivated, and to maintain their market value while the (usually) young #3s and #4s come through the ranks.

Mignolet at Brugge is an unusual situation. As Liverpool's designated #2 he was no longer Belgium's obvious #2 or even #3 for the Euros (Belgium's #3 and #4 are first-choices for Wolfsburg and Strasbourg, respectively). The MNT matters to him, and if Courtois had got injured and Mignolet had played well in a strong side, the offers would have come in from Top 10 sides in Top 5 leagues. He's widely believed to have taken a pay cut to come to Brugge as the automatic starter, and if you're in his shoes you'd only join if the starting spot for every competitive game in the 2019-2020 season is guaranteed.

The Belgian season is cancelled, with Brugge declared champions. Does Horvath get a medal with (I believe) no appearances?

Almost certainly. Most leagues have different rules for GKs than for outfield players, especially the back-ups.

  19. He's grounded. Belgians are stopping Belgians from going to the Netherlands with road blocks.

Not only most Dutch arenot allowed in, but Belgians wanting out are stopped too.

Since the Dutch talk about Belgians as the butt of their jokes, I assumed it was the Dutch keeping the Belgians out.

And go where? To the USA? America's gonna be the epicentre of the Coronavirus in pretty short order. At least until India's infection rate ramps up.

  23. And he has his team mate Vormer's wife guarding against the virus in the front line too in Brugge!
See the vid in this link (if it works)

And she goes by the name Roos (=Rose and pronounced like this too) America.
If that doesnot qualify her as a must like at facebook for Yanks, what does?
