The current emphasis on GK foot skills isnt going away and it's not going to be good news for any US keeper trying to become elite.
Same news for every keeper in the world. Our young keepers are being trained with feet too. USA is not part of Greenland yet.
Think we are underselling Hahnemann a bit here but I get the general sentiment. Not why our goalkeeper development is struggling atm. Much bigger issues at hand than the ability to ping a 40 yard ball.
MH was awesome.I was using Feuer as a counterpoint. Agreed that we lacking in many other areas currently besides aiding playing from the back.Command of the box, rebound control...we just aren't what we were.
Oh uhhh... idk, I think this tumultuous time for Horvath will end up being more a blimp than an overarching tone. Every US gk sat at some point during a time when they shouldn't. Also think Hahnemann will end up outplaying Steffen but TBD for both. Just my guesses : )
I still gotta believe that US keepers must be worth looks at by foreign clubs. Sure, not at elite clubs but clubs like say a Frosinone or a Racing Santander or Union Berlin don't need such a guy. They simply need someone who can elevate their defense and keep some damn shutouts. A US keeper can manage that on the cheap cheap.
You're right. Transfermarkt shows he played 5 Premier League matches between West Ham and Derby. Not to get too much off topic but it's quite intriguing how many U.S. keepers found their way to England in the 90s with a few in the Premier League and a few in the Championship. There was even one who was Norwegian-American that I read was the no.3 for Norway in a World Cup.
It's like the whole world got mad at us for finding a position we excelled at and were like yeah we're changing out being good at this position means.
Damn, I'm always shocked by so many who underrate Howard. Dude was no.1 at Everton for a decade; several of his seasons he was among the best keepers in the country.
I'm pretty sure @striker was talking about Kasper Schmeichel's hair, in which case I don't think anyone can dispute Schmeichel has a much longer peak than Howard.
"What being good at this position means" has changed, dramatically. Great shot-stopping with velcro hands, excellent distribution with hands from a standing position and excellent concentration are no longer what even mid-table EPL or BL sides are looking for: they want guys who can pass the damn ball with the feet and start the offence. Peter Schmichael was mentioned earlier. Not too sure that even he'd get into a Top 5 EPL side these days.
Oh I agree 100 percent. It might be awhile if ever the United States produces the quality of GK where we could have three starters in the EPL. That being said, I do agree with others that to a degree I think pure shot stopping is being undervalued now as a result.
