ESPN FC Press Pass will return to U.S. television starting Wednesday August 15 with shows airing 6 days a week on ESPNEWS (USA) on Sundays-Fridays at 11pm Pacific Time (Mondays-Saturdays at 2am Eastern Time.) ESPN FC Press Pass originates from Bristol, Connecticut and is usually produced live at 6:30pm Eastern Time (2330 London Time) for airing on ESPN UK. ESPN FC Press Pass is a punditry show, with up to 3 pundits in the studio and additional pundits or reporters at remote locations. Expect EPL to be the focus of the discussion. The soccer TV wars are definitely on, with ESPN, FOX Sports Media Group, and beIN SPORT LLC all jockeying for position as the bid deadline for U.S. video rights to EPL for August 2013-May 2016 approaches (anticipated to be Friday October 5 at 12noon Eastern Time.)
Archived on-demand at ESPNFC.com (with some highlights notably EPL) and ESPN.co.uk (usually with no highlights) Expect the show to be EPL centric now that it airs live on ESPN UK. Chances are the show will be available for streaming at ESPN.co.uk before it airs on ESPNEWS (USA).
I always thought that ESPN 2 should show the replay of the 6 episodes of Press Pass on Saturday Mornings from 4:30a to 7:30a leading into the Premier League broadcast that starts at 7:30a since 15 minutes of pregame isn't all that much of a preview when the game starts at 7:45a. I enjoy Sportsnation which is usually the program that lead into the Prem Game but I think they could do better by showing at least a couple of episodes of Press Pass before game coverage starts. That said glad that they found a home for the show on ESPN NEWS even if it is in the middle of the night.
If you guys recall, I stated this a few months ago about the fact that ESPN will start focusing on bringing some Soccer show on a daily basis...This is just the start of the process... Before the 2014 WC, and with ESPN winning the EPL rights again for the 2013-2016 TV cycle, we will see a daily soccer show coming to ESPN2/ESPN (at least M-F).... Watch the trends....The first EPL match is on ESPN this season....I mentioned this a few months ago that some EPL games are going to be shown on the flagship network going forward. After the college season is over, I wouldn't be surprised to see ESPN vs. ESPN2 showing some EPL games during the January-May window...This is a clear indication that ESPN will up their coverage of EPL going forward...The ratings will follow...(call it the Euro2012 trickle down effect)...
Too bad it can't be on at the same time as the 11 PM "Late" SportsCenter. Usually, during primetime, SportsCenter shifts to ESPNews. As soon as it goes back to ESPN, then a ton of time opens up on ESPNews.
It's nice, don't get me wrong, but is there really much of a difference between ESPN and ESPN2, other than any perceived psychological benefit?
Not only we are seeing that showing games on ESPN tend to deliver higher ratings...Case in point, the same thing happened with the Euros...ESPN delivered more Euro games in 2012 vs. ESPN2 (Euro 2008)...This helped the ratings substantially....The same principal was followed during the WC2010. The US vs. Mexico WCQ should see the same treatment...Shifting to ESPN vs. ESPN2...The game is much bigger than a few years ago...It has become a premium property (a la Barcelona vs. Real Madrid or another marquee match-up) for the US market.
ESPNFC Press Pass will be available at ESPNFC.com usually at around 11pm Eastern Time so that you won't have to wait until 2am Eastern to watch it on ESPNEWS. My article in the New York Times Soccer Blog "Goal" will be posted shortly by editor Jack Bell, hopefully by 11pm Eastern Time at the latest. The creator of Press Pass is none other than Tommy Smyth.
I think you're reading too much into the switch of this match to ESPN....ESPN2 has a live event that begins at 11 AM ET (Amateur Baseball Championship), while ESPN is carrying the Little League World Series at noon. It is just a case of those broadcasts dictating where the EPL game can be shown. However, there was a time when if the ESPN2 time slot was not available, then the only alternative would be to watch online on ESPN3.
My friend, I have not seen so much hype for EPL...ESPN 30 sec spot for EPL has been airing for a while...EPL news is captured more often on Sportscenter...more American fans are becoming aware of EPL..The EURO 2012 effect will be felt on EPL this season...the overall rating could jump another 25% to 30% this year...college Football fans appreciate EPL... You will see more games on ESPN vs. ESPN2 in the coming season...
Are you expecting them to air much customised segments on ESPN News considering their time slot I would think they will just take the full show straight through the majority of the times maybe with tonight being the exception because of its their first show back in the US and because of the big game played against Mexico. The last time I can recall them doing a customised segment here was for the last A-league Grand Final which I considered short and of poor quality but was a surprise because I was expecting them not to cover it at all. The show to me has become too UK centric for my tastes being on 6 days does not help because they just run out of things to discuss and it becomes repetitive which in the end has made me loose interest in the show so hoping the re-launch of the show, new website and returning to the US they will try a few new things and try and make the show more interesting.
ESPNFC Press Pass will be patched over with highlights that are cleared only for the U.S. when available, much like CNN International's World Sport (which aired at 1am New York Time) had a U.S.-specific highlights segment added to the end of the show when CNN/Sports Illustrated was in operation (prior to May 15, 2002). (World Sport has become way too British as well. No more baseball scores or highlights. I watched it on CNN Airport Network USA about 7 weeks ago for the first time in 8 years and noticed how much the news content has changed.) Lots of competition for English-speaking soccer fanatics in the U.S., with FOX Soccer licensing a new show from Rogers Sportsnet in Toronto (FOX Soccer News) starting Friday night to replace FOX Soccer Report from Shaw Media in Winnipeg. The star of FOX Soccer News will be 25-year-old former Canadian women's national team star Kara Lang. A year from now, beIN SPORT Tonight may launch from Toronto as well if beIN SPORT Canada were up and running (beIN SPORT USA launched on August 15 as well.) 2 former FOX Soccer Report anchors (husband and wife team of Jeremy St. Louis and Terri Leigh) will be working at beIN SPORT USA in Miami starting sometime in September.
Would they really go out of their way to do extra patch work for a US only edition that airs at 2am? I could not see anything run in the show that would be clear for the US that could not get clearance for Australia.
Press Pass was patched during Euro 2012 with highlights that were cleared only for the U.S. and Caribbean. Only way for U.S. viewers to watch the show then was at ESPNFC.com.
Outside of Olympics, World Cups and Euros everything should be right to be cleared. Footage of Euros was still being leaked through via Sportscenter segments and other US shows into Australia at that time. The only time I have seen ESPN actively block out footage here is during the Olympics
at least they will put it up online before it airs here. no way i can stay up till 2am to watch this when im waking up at 430am each day for work lol.
It wouldn't shock me if Press Pass did segments on MLS and the USMNT/USWNT just for the US audience that they plug into the show.
That what I would be thinking if they gave it a more suitable timeslot. I hope they bring back segments like this that they use to insert into Sportscenter
Press Pass has completely disappeared from my DVR schedule and a search doesn't find it. Did something happen to it in the US?
