Yeah the following tweet basically confirms this - That was my last game at Euro 2016 for @espn. Greatly appreciate the communication with viewers in the USA. Thanks all.— Derek Rae (@RaeComm) June 26, 2016 Heres where you will see Derek in less than two months - Holiday time now and then back to Scotland in time for the new @spfl season, and of course Champions League, @Bundesliga_EN etc.— Derek Rae (@RaeComm) June 26, 2016 My commentary work does pop up in the USA on the SPFL and Bundesliga so hope some of you manage to find it next season. Have enjoyed Euros.— Derek Rae (@RaeComm) June 26, 2016
I bet ESPN was planning on a hum-drum round of 16 match way in advance and kept Wimbledon Day 1 on ESPN. I'm surprised they didn't switch tennis to 2 when they knew it would be Spain-Italy.
I guess they were expecting Belgium-Croatia which still would have been a good match but not the same sizzle.
I've never seen such devastating losses like in the two tournaments this weekend and today. Fashion in which some teams were eliminated are for the history books. I'm still trying to forget my nightmare. But it makes for some really great (or very bad) tv.
Wow! That's poor. I spent part of this tournament in both US and Canada and I gotta say the coverage in the latter is vastly superior! My condolences to those who have had to deal with ESPN's coverage throughout. I always felt there were two main advantages to having commentators: 1) receiving the insight that someone actually sitting in the stadium gets which can't necessarily be grasped from watching on TV, and 2) hearing the opinions of people that once played at this level. Since smoking weed is being legalized in Canada I was a bit out-of-it when watching Belgium x Hungary live. Now rewatching it back in the US. What is the point of having commentators like Bretos and that women (Julie Foudy(?)). If they can't satisfy the only two criteria above, what's the point? Just the natural stadium noise will do.

Macca is an England expert and embarrassed himself in that by insisting that Rooney retains his spot regardless of how bad he is and how much it hurt the team. Not surprised to see Tyler promoted he has done well and works well off of Darke
I always liked Derek Rae from the old days when he was one of ESPN's main UCL commentators, and he also did some MLS work. Clearly they put him out to pasture some time ago. Nice to hear him make a few cameos for USA viewers this month. And good to hear that he's been applying his talent somewhere else. I guess he's based out of Scotland now? Or England??
I remember back in the early days of MLS Rae called New England Revolution matches, and he suppressed his Scottish accent to sound more "American". That's where I first heard him so it was weird when he'd pop up on ESPN UCL matches with the brogue.
Sports TV Ratings @SportsTVRatings - Euro Championships 2016 - Quarterfinal - Poland-Portugal - ESPN2 - 1.158 M Sports TV Ratings @SportsTVRatings - Probably won’t post viewership table for Thursday and Friday until Tuesday. Hope everyone has a great July 4 weekend!
Julie Foudy would even be terrible on a USWNT commentary team...but she was part of the USWNT 90s teams, so ESPN has her as part of their D-list or E-list or whatever. If ESPN insists on having a female announcer...they can do better.
Agreed. If you scroll up, there's some tweets about how he'll go back to Scotland for SPL and UCL stuff. Derek Rae is an absolute gem. And we absolutely need more Bob Ley. That guy is one of the best.
I remember Oliver writing about this. I think he even tried to suppress the accent a bit during some earlier UCL games. (That Derek-Tommy team on espn2 was fantastic.) I can't believe it's been 10-20 years ago.
He was banned. https://www.linkedin.com/in/olivertse888 http://worldsoccertalk.com/2015/10/...up-on-fox-sports-not-univision-by-oliver-tse/ is something he wrote in October before the CONCACAF Cup.
