    Just a little note

I was on the metro this morning (yellow line) and I saw an ESPN poster on the train related to DCU.

    ******************
    (red background)

    WITHOUT SPORTS,
    D.C. WOULDN'T
    BE UNITED

    ESPN
    ******************

Always nice to see a little effort from ESPN in the name of soccer.

I love it when that stuff happens! Nice way to start the day.

Now, I hope they'll actually have a soccer a spot on SportsCenter, at least occassionally

Maybe they can use that as a TV commercial. Show the nest bouncing, and gradually fade to the red screen with the black text. Hey, they used Real Madrid. Why not DC?

My girlfriend spotted that ad as well and told me on the phone.

I thought at first that she saw it on TV. But then I remembered she doesn't watch ESPN (except when I can get her to watch DCU).

    But still, nice ad.

ESPN sucks. They don't know jack about sports. If it ain't baseball and football, it ain't on ESPN. The poster probably was for (DCU) DC University, the place where all those loser ESPN "sports"casters go to get educated. I want soccer. I take my business to Fox Sports World.

What about college basketball and hockey?

The poster actually said "United." It did not say "DCU."

While I think its cool, I wonder if it is really DC United related?

I read it as a play on the fact that DC, has home of the government, has many differing people, ideas, and opinions, but everyone here gets behind the sportsteams.

    But, I could be wrong

Wouldn't it be a red, white, and blue background then? The Red and Black is definitley for our beloved United.

I haven't seen the actual poster, but if you have seen the commercials with the same theme, the colors are red and white, just like the poster that was seen.

You could be right, but seeing as the poster was from ESPN, I doubt it.

I thought the lettering was black.

Not sure. The first post about the poster in question only says:

I was on the metro this morning (yellow line) and I saw an ESPN poster on the train related to DCU.

    (red background)

    WITHOUT SPORTS,
    D.C. WOULDN'T

It doesn't mention black type. No doubt it would be cool if it was a DC United related poster, but given ESPN's distain for soccer, I'm not sure.

it probably has a double meaning. For those of us knowledgeable about United, we see it that way. For those other people, they see it another way. Just feel special that you pick up on it.
Like when you are staring at one of those 3-D posters and the guy next to you can't see it....

It was black lettering with a red background. I think it's only meaning would be in reference to DCU. If it had to do with the DC sports teams, then it would have used "Washington" as DCU is the only team to claim "D.C." as its origin.

Plus, it doesn't make much sense, if it was refering to Washington D.C. "United" only has significance to DCU.

    I also agree with rickinva

If ESPN is behind it, they would stick to their normal add types... i.e. one sport or team to push their message.

But as todda74 said, It's probably only special to those who are knowledgeable about United. Other people would think it just sounds nice. (which would also follow ESPN's habits of not really pushing soccer).

Either way, to me, it means DCU. And that's all that matters.

Saw it for the first time last night (in several cars), no question it is referring to DCU. Similar theme to some ads DCU themselves ran before the first season in 1996. Nice surprise, I had to look at it 3 or 4 times to overcome the shock that it was about DCU, it was positive, and came from ESPN :D

It is a pleasant suprise, now that you all have confirmed it. And that loser George Michael didn't even mention DC United getting Ernie Stewart on tonight's sportscast. Too busy talking about loser-sports

If someone has the good luck to see the ad and has a camera, could you take a picture?
