What do you think of Eric as a sideline reporter? I personally feel that he was better in the booth last season with the three man team for that one Galaxy game.

I strongly feel that the best crew will consist of Wynalda and Harkes in the booth and Julie Foudy on the sidelines. How about Marc Conolly? He has established himself as the best soccer writer in the US. How would he be in the booth?

I say get rid of the sideline spot altogether, but that's not gonna happen. We obviously need to hear what the coaches think about why their side is playing crap....

yeah, a 3 man booth would be better. And you have to get an analyst who the audience connects with more than Ty. How many young players now know who Keough is? Every knowledgeable fan knows who Wynalda, Harkes and Lalas are. Take 2 of those and put them in the booth with Stoney. Plus they have alot more credibility and knowledge about today's game.
Plus the producers should tell them that it's ok to not agree with each other.

    Thumbs up for Waldo

I thought he was fantastic. I agree that the sideline reporter spot isn't really needed, but I'd like to see Eric up in the booth. He made some astute observations which a retired pro should provide, and he wasn't afraid to say what he's thinking.

I'd really like to see more of him. It will be great to get more pros in the booths.

Give him time. He's smart and funny, which will help. Eric needs a little emotional distance from the Nats at this point to do their games, I think, but he would/will be great on MLS broadcasts.

I was at the game so I didn't get to listen to Wynalda et. al. but I did get to watch him during halftime. He was chatting with two guys who hadn't played, maybe Buddle and Martino, and by his gestures it was obvious he had a lot to say about tactics and movement. He was pointing and gesticulating what looked to be how attackers should be moving and the ball distributed. That's what I would like to here more about: tactics, strategy, and breaking down the other team. What was even better was how excited he was to be talking about it. Wynalda was definitely having a good time instructing these guys.

Very unrelatedly, I don't know how many coaches were on the bench but there was one on the field during the second half: Earnie Stewart. He spent a lot of time yelling, pointing and generally directing the other players. It was more than his play that affected the team when he came oon.

I think Wynalda should have gotten the start over Kirovski.

She's cute, but I'd rather have Eric. He has a personality, knows the players and the game. I bet he could even explain the offside rule (unlike Ty).

anyone notice how cold the interview was between wynalda and mcbride. i sense some bad blood there. besides that fact that mcbride totally disagreed with wynalda about how the first half was played, they just didn't seem to like eachother. esp. mcbride.

If Loudy Foudy gets anywhere within 50 feet of a microphone during a USMNT match, I'm defecting to Bhutan...;)

Waldo was fine, Harkes would be better, Lalas would be best, but he's not quite done yet, apparently...

Warzycha, you call yourself a Crew fan???? I'm ashamed of you...:)

    BURGESS!!!!!

  13. I think Marc Conolly should do somethon on ExtraTime like a beat reporter or something. Who does a story of the week and a weekly wrapup. Maybe like a 5 min segment. I like Rich Gannon and Wynalda in the halftime booth. I still Prefer JP and Tommy Smyth in the booth and Rob Stone on the sideline.

Hey Ty has taken a lot of heat over the missed call. Eric and Stone must get some of the blame as well. A good play by play guy, would have know Ty was wrong. Sure Eric will say I did not have a replay. Arent you supposed to know , the officals did not have replays, and they take heat. Why is it OK for Eric not to know. If anything a player of his experiance up top should have been all over the call. Is it the reason he got the job , because of his experiance as a player.

Although he was a great player, Eric isn't very bright and articulate. And I know many people think him as an arsehole, whether they are correct, I have no idea.

I think Rich Gannon already has a job that pays a little bit better than MLS announer ;)

I think Wynalda is going to do a terrific job. It's so much better to have someone who actually knows the game down there and can contribute something beyond the obvious.

I thought Stone and Ty did a nice job of trying to get him involved. Ideally he can function as a 3rd man in the booth because there's plenty of room during a broadcast to include him.

He'll get better as he gets more experience. Given his personality, I would love to see him start debating Ty a little bit. If you've got two knowlegable analysts who disagree and can argue their points intelligently, it can make for some interesting broadcasts.

    "give him time...", "he'll improve..."

    did I miss something?

Of the three (Ty, Rob, and Waldo), Wynalda is the one I actually wanted to listen to.
I cannot stand Ty and Rob.
Waldo actually has credibility and his on-air personality isn't grating.

I disagree with the person who said he isn't very bright or articulate. He strikes me as a well-spoken, no nonsense guy who actually knows what he's talking about. I'd much rather listen to Waldo discuss tactics than put up with Keough's incessant yammering.

Waldo's miles ahead of anybody that's ever worked a Nats game from the sideline reporter spot. None of Rob's cheesy grins and silly jokes; none of Veronica's creampuff questions. They just need to put him in the booth.
For those who disagree with my assessment, well, they can have Roy "barely audible/awake" Wegerle. :)

I still think Dave Dir did a great job at the US-Argie game.

    Agreed.
I normally don't like side-line reporters in this sport, but he was good at what he did.
The few players that don't know him personally, know of him. This way he can talk to the players and report a "real players perspective". As close as possible, anyway.
Call me sexist, but I'd rather see Veronica Paysee in Maxim magazine than on the soccer field.

I too noticed that there was some tension between the two of them. Maybe McBride is jealous of Wynalda for holding the U.S. men's National team all time scoring record, or maybe Wynalda is jealous of McBride because of his fame in Europe and the fact that McBride is a better player than him...Lol, anyway, keep Wynalda, he knows his soccer.

I think he's great - he's insightful, not afraid to speak his mind and really let someone have it for sucking, alert and really in touch with the game and the players still out there. The interview with Stewart after the game was great since they knew each other and could share a laugh.

Wynalda has also been a great guest on the national soccer radio show Monday nights.

He's good on the sidelines. He's good in the booth. He's good for MLS / the National Team.

I don't care who is in the boothe as long as it isnt Rob Stone. I can't believe I am going to say this, but I would rather have Jack up there than Rob. I say give Waldo and anyone esle a chance. I wonder what the announcers from MEAN MACHINE are doing during the Confederations Cup?
