Smalling may not be comfortable with the ball at his feet, but as a defender, I'll still take him any day over Jones. Amazing how much he's regressed in that area in recent years. Good save from Dave: that should do well for his confidence.
That or maybe it's that some people were fooled by his purple patch when Ole took over as that being his new normal. In reality, it was a spike that most players on the team took and now he's back to being who he was before...a guy with talent and that works hard but is an average finisher, with poor composure, that doesn't read the game well and makes a lot of bad decisions. He still has a long way to go before he's good enough to be our starting 9. If we go into next season with him as our 9, we won't finish top 4.
I can accept the fact that he may not be as good as he's shown earlier when Ole took over. But he is not as bad as he's been as of late either. That is clearly bad form, lack of confidence, coupled with not being anywhere near fit for a while now. His true worth is probably somewhere in the middle: a player who should be good for 15-20 goals minimum per season. The player we've seen recently is not representative of who he really is.
How does the referee not call that? How does he allow ploy to go on with a player down injured with a head injury? How do other teams get these protections but we don't? That was a pretty dirty elbow.
This chopping and changing is not helping. TBF to Ole, with injuries this week being Lukaku, Martial, Lins and Mason for the forwards and Bailly / Smalling injured he doesn't have much choice forward or at the back. The Herrera thing is presumably because thanks to Ed he is gone anyway. Gonna have to do something to figure out why we get so many injuries. I get the whole pre-season thing and squad depth thing, however something is not right at our club in this regard.
15 goals isn't good enough for the starting 9 in a top team (which we aren't, but should aspire to be). That's why I say he isn't good enough to be a starter next season. The only way he can be our starting 9 is if we somehow buy an elite scoring winger this summer, which we won't. We don't get enough goals from midfield for our starting striker to have 15 goals and still be successful. It's clear Ole loves Rashford and won't buy a new 9 in the summer and this is a major problem. It's flying under the radar because we have so many other problem areas. Look at the top teams in the league... Aguero has 20 but they also have Sterling at 17. Pool have Salah at 22 and Mane at 18. He'll get more chances as the squad improves but I don't see Rash reaching 20 goals next season so unless we get a high scoring winger, our focal point needs to be a better finisher than Rash.
I don't really want Rashford to have the sole responsibility of being our CF next season. Don't think he's ready for that. Greenwood is a great prospect but he's not going to be fully ready for anything more than a backup role. Martial at 9 is still kind of an unknown and not someone we are sure we still can fully rely on and Lingard really should be a squad guy, especially after we bring in a genuine RW/RWF (that's why I'd absolutely love Pepe to join our ranks). I want Lukaku gone, simply because he's not a good fit to Ole's system, but it's imperative we bring in a quality CF to replace him and to share the CF burden with Rashford: someone like Werner or Lyon's Dembele would be good choices. Rashford can still come good but as stated, it would be a terrible mistake to put it all on him as of yet and could ruin or at least setback what still looks like a very promising career as far as I'm concerned. I think he can easily reach the 15-20 goal mark next season. If we bring in someone who can score alongside him, it's something I will absolutely take.
Sanchez with a bad giveaway, half-arsed attempt to get it back then goes down with a minor injury and gets taken off. Hope that is the last time I ever see him in a Man Utd shirt.
