For me (and I may be in the minority here) but being born somewhere gives a person much more of a connection than someone who has a granny from somewhere. This idea that we’re utilising our old colonies for our football team is ludicrous and quite frankly racist to even suggest that. They’re English born and bred, this is their country full stop. I’d be surprised if Harvey Barnes has ever stepped foot in Scotland. So that’s the difference for me….and it’s a big one
Ahh fair enough. My point still stands though. These countries are asking players to play for them despite not even setting foot in them countries. And then they have the nerve to criticise us for playing players that are born and bred here.
Saw a clip of Fabio Carvalho floating about online, from a few week back during the Euros where he confirmed he still doesn’t have a British Passport. Not sure what his international future is considering he seemingly asked to not get selected by Portugal U21s a while back, bit he doesn’t seem to be any rush to get a Passport, unless he flunked the test.
Not at U17 level. He was still bouncing around clubs at that point. Only really came onto the scene at senior level. It is not as if he has been treated particularly well by the French set up. They have hardly rolled out the red carpet but he’s stuck with them even after being given significant rejections. People raise options as losses even if it is quite obvious that they have decided they don’t want to play for England.
Iddrisa Dauda ('08) listed amongst West Brom's first-team squad. Unlikely he'll actually play but is highly rated at the club and has been getting some minutes in pre-season. Was called up to Italy's U17 squad the other day but ended up pulling out. Brighton's Cristiano Anah is also in that same squad as well. I think they're both equally valid connections, but that wouldn't really change your argument's conclusion. If it's not fair to dismiss a player's connection with his ancestral heritage because of where he was born, then it also wouldn't be fair to dismiss a players connection to their birth country by virtue of their ancestral heritage. I think the sooner both sides of the diaspora debate can accept this, the better and less acrimonious the whole discussion will be.
Meanwhile, McClaren reportedly gearing up for some recruiting effort: Steve McClaren sets his sights on former Man United ace and Arsenal forward for Jamaica call-ups I don't think Gibbs-White happens unless he's uncapped next summer. Then we have a shot, assuming we promise a seat on the plane to WC 2026 and are actually on track to get there. He is close to some of our current players and clearly recognizes and appreciates his heritage, so if England's not materializing I think he'll genuinely be interested in a switch. Nelson and Mitchell seem realistic. Greenwood does too, somewhat. All of them have shown some concrete interest. I don't think Isaac Hayden and Max Aarons want to play for us. They have zero England hopes, so that's not a factor there, they just don't seem to care about representing Jamaica and that's fine. Not realistic targets imo, although I've no issue with McClaren taking the shot and seeing if I'm wrong (it doesn't look like I am, but it'd be nice if I was). Ben Godfrey is someone I'd have put in the Gibbs-White camp 3 years ago when he was firmly on Southgates radar and earning callups to camp but he's really hit some turbulence career wise. That fall-off really needs to be studied. The run at Everton finally hit a wall and now he's been forced to seek refuge outside of the EPL. At 26 going on 27, he actually seems realistic now as well, and he'd be a very solid asset for us.
Carsley really likes Gibbs- White as well so he might well call him up this autumn. I think the FA might become more aggressive in dealing with duals now as the criticism over their errors over Musiala and Olise will only keep growing over the following years.
Gibbs-White is a fine player but he'd have to take the spot of a better player to get in this team. Maybe Carsley will call him but I think it would be hard to justify. We have tonnes of these ball carrying, winger/10 hybrids already. In terms of new faces I think we should be prioritising pacey, direct wide players.
On one hand, England is tough for him to break into rn. There are just so many highly capable players who can play the roles he plays (by my county, at least a dozen or so who could work that hybrid winger/AM role). At the same time, he's good enough to be in the discussion at least and knows Carsley very well. Plus, these next few matches for England are all cap-tying Nations League fixtures - if he plays even a minute, he's locked in for good. And there's going to be a lot of potential minutes and likely room for Carsley to experiment. I genuinely feel like he's more likely gone than not, but I guess we'll see.
After winning the U17 World Cup and the U21 Euros with England I'd be amazed if Gibbs-White jumped ship as anything other than a last resort to play international football.

Yes theres an interview somewhere where he says winning the Euro U21s was a better feeling than the birth of his first child! . Also he's still quit young and may morph into a different type of player.
I don't know. It's usually pretty obvious to me when a potential dual just isn't interested at all in even the idea of representing us and we have no hope of convincing him. Deeney, Isaac Hayden, Jermaine Pennant, Max Aarons and many others are/were like this. Gibbs-White doesn't give off that vibe - he's reportedly been at least willing to listen in each of the contacts he's had with Jamaica and never been dismissive (even though he's always made it clear he won't decide until later). He's not quiet or shy about the heritage either like most nonchalant duals (the island is pretty prominently tattooed on his left arm and he openly speaks about the connection publicly, even unprompted). I think if we do get 12 or so months down the road and he's still on the outside looking in with England, I'm confident we have a real shot. But I'm not so confident he'll still be on the outside by then.
Made his first-team debut today in the EFL Cup. Presumably the reason he dropped out of that Italy squad.
Personally I don't see MGW ever being good enough for the seniors. We have numerous better players in his position. James Maddison was left at home for the Euros and he's a margin better than MGW.
They have played for us also right? I still find it curious how France come to our shores to pick players when they seem to always have a big conveyor belt of talent coming through. Hope we don’t lose these two if they are worth fighting for.
Noubissie has played for both, Samba hasn't played fixtures for either but has attended camps with both.
Why wouldn't they though? It the current climate all nations should seek to maximise their talent pool.
No I'm not saying they shouldn’t, just that it’s interesting that they have one of the best conveyor belt systems of continuous talent always of a really high standard but they now look to our shores for talent which maybe suggests they see better talents than what they produce. I guess we have already seen that with Olise.
We should definitely take it as a sign that our youth development system has been working excellently recently. They're too young to get overly bothered about atm anyway, all we can do is keep offering them call-ups and if they stick with France then so be it.
Trouble is England has no identity. Younger people or players don't have a proper English identity. With alot of other countries you can identify with. I've said identity alot I know lol
Patriotism and national identity tends to be much weaker in countries like England, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium etc than it is in most other parts of Europe. Hard to change that culture; I'm certainly proud of where I'm from but wouldn't say I'm a massive patriot myself, despite loving the England football team.
