Their coach is probably going to get sacked. You can usually tell by the after match interview if a coach doesn’t have long left. “We found them hard to break down, we accept it’s not acceptable” “A couple will have to look at themselves with regards to work rate off the ball”🎙️ Rob Page | Gibraltar 0-0 Cymru pic.twitter.com/bwywmYPtcl— Sgorio ⚽️ (@sgorio) June 6, 2024
It’s either out of sheer stupidity or pure desperation that they even picked a few of them players for that squad. Some of them are only kids. Ironically, they’re all English eligible which makes me wonder if it’s out of desperation to give them a cap and rush them through.
Totally agree. Crew has never even played a first team game. Koumas has made about 2 appearances for Liverpool. Problem with wales is they have an overinflated opinion of themselves. Their once In a lifetime run to the semis 8 years ago has given them unrealistic expectations
I wonder who they will get. I’m not sure they would be attractive enough to Steve Cooper or Rob Edwards at the moment.
Yeah they suddenly think they’re a big nation because they had one good tournament in 2016. I actually feel sorry for some of their young duals because I think the lure of playing international football overshadows their thinking. If handled right, they could grow to be good players but they’re destined for a career of short comings with wales.
I was shocked how many of the Wales U17 team were English born, I knew they recruited early but didn't realise it was the majority of the playing squad at that age level. Some can definitely be lured by the prospect of Senior International football at an early age, but lets be honest football is a fleeting career, sometimes you just have to take the best opportunity thats placed in front of you. The likes of Ampadu and Dan James have 50+ caps when they'd likely have zero if they choose England.
I’m not sure they can even afford to sack Page. The development coach that was in their set up for years would probably be their first choice. Osain Roberts.
Yeah that’s a fair point. I don’t think we’ve lost any high profile players to them yet. I can only assume there will be a scenario in the future where a player on good form will have a decision to make…hopefully England
Apparently Danny Ward had a poor game today. No easy fix to that issue. Painful reminder Danny Ward has not played club football for 15 months.— Phil Blanche 🏴 (@philblanche) June 9, 2024 The alarming thing about Wales’ GK situation is that it won’t be changing soon. Ward is getting worse; Davies is similarly allergic to club football; King traded in playing to be a 3rd choice; Hennessey’s 37; and the next gen… didn’t have one. Eddie Beach, 20, is our only hope.— Huw Davies (@thehuwdavies) June 9, 2024
Eddie Beach another English born player. Maybe if wales invested I'm a youth centre like ours they wouldn't be struggling for players.
To be fair, I highly doubt the Welsh FA have anything like as much money as our FA have to invest in these infrastructures, even though our FA is massively flawed with people that don’t know what they are doing but that’s for another time.
The causes of Wales and Irelands struggles with producing international players are quite obvious IMO Bale coming through Southampton obviously papered over the issues with Wales and now he's gone, they have gone back to what they were pre-Bale Although Scotlands problems far are more difficult to pinpoint as they don't seem to have the same shortcomings as Wales do
They also have a population that's a third of Greater London's, so it's always going to be tough to compete. I know, Croatia and Uruguay, but those are very much outliers.
Nigeria have had an awful start to WC qualifying. Four games and zero wins. Think it was 5 England eligible options that played in their 2-1 loss to Benin today.
Population of Lesotho: 2m Population of Nigeria: 230m Almost as embarrassing as losing to Iceland (population: 400,000)
Tawanda Chirewa (2003) scores his first goal for Zimbabwe. Played off the bench a bit for Wolves in the past season.
Lesotho were defeated today by Rwanda. Rwanda who were in the 5th pot (of 6) now lead this crazy group. What makes it even more bizarre is that the games in this group don’t start again until 2025.
No Omari Hutchinson in the Jamaican Copa America squad. Let's go! See you in Copa! 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲#Jamaicalandwelove #reggaeboyz2026 pic.twitter.com/pyhaGXevMO— Official J.F.F (@jff_football) June 13, 2024
This is what I expected. That said, if there was any chance at all of him suiting up for Jamaica, it was going to occur now. This is the biggest tournament Jamaica has been involved with since 1998, and the highest profile tournament this year alongside the Euros. Its a big stage. If that wasn't enough to draw him to commit, probably nothing will be (short of a World Cup berth, I suppose, but I wouldn't offer a seat on the plane to a player this uncommitted who hasn't at least been involved in a few qualifiers prior to the tournament). He's 100% in the England category now as far as I'm concerned. We will see if he can get a chance in the EPL next season and get on Southgate's radar ahead of 2026.
https://www.tz.de/sport/fc-bayern/gespraeche-bayern-arsenal-juwel-fortgeschrittene-zr-93123178.html Chidi Obi is reportedly close to a move to Bayern Munich, which if it happens would mean he will never become eligible for England. Not that I think there is any chance of him playing for us regardless, but it does contextualize some of the unfair complaints on here that we didn't do enough to get him.
Predictably there is chatter on social media about how bad Southgate was to let Musiala slip through his fingers.
It’s easier to say in hindsight but at the time of his call up for Germany first time around he was basically a sub for Bayern when we had others performing at a higher level for us. I think it’s harsh to blame Southgate for this personally as many of us didn’t think he deserved a call up at that time. Germany gambled on a talent because they were lacking in that area at that time and it paid off for them. I dunno maybe we could have foreseen his future and took a punt and got him in but realistically U21’s was where he was for us at that time.
It wasn’t solely a case of whoever called him up first got him. Once he got a senior call he would just have to decide.
