Perfectly possible Hutchinson thinks he could switch back but has actually already tied himself to Jamaica.
It seems he’s keeping his options open, if he’s playing regular in The Championship you’d very much expect him to be in contention for the next u20s squad.
You're allowed a maximum of 3 caps of any kind (official, unofficial, competitive, or friendly, doesn't matter) before you're locked in. Hutchinson is at this limit - he has played in two friendlies (both in March earlier this year) and also made his debut in an unofficial friendly against Catalonia in 2022. The Catalonia game is a little more dubious since it was unofficial, but it is likely based on a read of the FIFA statutes that it counts, and Hutchinson's advisors have certainly made him aware of this risk and coached him accordingly. I'm of the view that he is focused on England and does not want to represent Jamaica right now. So at the moment, he isn't cap tied, but if he sets foot on the field for Jamaica for another second more, he likely will be, and that's what he'll work to avoid to preserve opportunity with England going forward.
The rules confuse me these days. Can I ask, would he be allowed to switch associations straight away or would he have to wait for a certain time?
Have to wait until three years have passed since the player's last senior appearance for their previous national team to switch to the new one. That's March 2026 for Hutchinson (just in time for the World Cup, should he be able to make his way up England's pecking order by then).
I couldn't honestly see anyone waiting that long. If he's already been capped by Jamaica, surely he's made his decision. Mind you, stranger things have happened.

Its actually very fuzzy what the rules are regarding this as FIFA keep revising them and issuing new clarifications every time an individual or association in a different situation raises a point about it. What I don't get though is if one of the friendlies Hutchinson played in had some kind of official FIFA standing, how could he have been involved in that after playing an official youth competition match for England and then still be eligible to switch back again. or apparently believe he is given you can only make one switch? I've never seen any news though of him actually submitting or FIFA approving a switch to Jamaica, merely of him applying for a passport. So what's going on? Its all a bit peculiar.
Is this just all hypothetical or has he given a signal that he would entertain a future England call up?
Just the fact he has only appeared in friendlies for Jamaica so far. @Athlone is an expert on all things Jamaican national team and is convinced he is keeping his options open.
The regulations aren't super clear, but as I've read it, the implication is that friendlies can count. This is what the text says about the conditions for a player to switch: https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/ccab990abf45fcf6/original/ro8mje8vw98yp3rvfbmi-pdf.pdf (Page 31) The wording implies it doesn't need to be an official match in a competitive situation, and also opens the door to the possibility that even an unofficial friendly (ex: a match against Catalonia) might count. I don't want to overstate my level of knowledge here, I do not know the kid personally so I can obviously be wrong. There's always the chance something else is going on in the background here that just isn't public knowledge. That being said, I've seen Jamaica pursue lots of duals in the past, and I've seen many hesitate to jump in and represent the country. I know what that looks like. I also can see the other factors on the wall here that all conspire to give him incentive to wait and see on Jamaica: his age, the potential U21 eligibility, getting his first shot at EFL football now and a potential fast track to England relevance again if he can show form, etc. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...there's indeed a chance its not an actual duck, but it probably is. His actions are in line with those of a player who just isn't committed, so until I clearly see otherwise that's where I have to conclude he stands.
I think the next international window should tell us something. Surely he has to be ahead of some of the wing options in the last u20 camp.
And he is already at a level that would mean he would justifiably be worthy of a further senior call up for Jamaica. So if he is absent from both England and Jamaica that is telling.
https://www.lep.co.uk/sport/footbal...on-argentina-felipe-rodriguez-gentile-4337221 Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe says England tried to call-up young forward Felipe Rodriguez-Gentile, who has gone away with Argentina under-17s for the first time. The 16-year-old was born in Brazil, to Argentine parents and is eligible to represent both of those countries as well as Spain. News of his call-up to Diego Placente’s squad was confirmed on Monday, with Argentina taking on Boca in a friendly this week as they gear up for the FIFA U17 World Cup - taking place in Indonesia at the end of this year.
Mentions he doesn’t have British passport and I thought he hadn’t been in England long enough under the education clause anyway.
https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/su...e-talent-declares-for-england/a191014906.html Couple of weeks old but this article says Omari Kellyman filed a one-time switch to play for England and now can’t go back to Northern Ireland.
Interesting if true as he's eligible for Ghana as well which would've been a better option than NI. If you're being cold and rational about it then his agent has performed poorly here given he's locked in to England for good aged 18. Good for us mind. It looks like he's started the season very well. 4 goals in 2 games in PL2. A goal in the EFL trophy which is a senior app and he played 90 and got an assist in Aston Villa's Conference League victory against Hibs.
