I am assuming that, man-to-man comparisons puts England ahead of the US in talent...but I'm not aware of the most current England starting 11. Could somebody give the starting eleven, and perhaps compare it to the following starting eleven for the US? I'd like to see which positions make up the gulf in class between England and the US...I can think of a few easily (esp. defense and perhaps our second forward spot) where the US is weak, but I don't know who England has at those positions to counter the US. The starters are (for a 4-4-2, with options given for each where the starter isn't clear) Forwards: --Eddie Johnson (Dallas Burn) --Conor Casey (FC Mainz) OR Brian Ching (SJ Earthquakes) OR Brian McBride (Fulham) Midfield: --Landon Donovan (Bayern Leverkusen [starting this winter]) --Damarcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven) --Claudio Reyna (Manchester City) --John O'Brien (Ajax Amsterdam) Defense: --Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96) --Oguchi Onyewu (Standard Liege) OR Jonathan Spector (Man Utd.) OR Cory Gibbs (Dallas Burn) --Carlos Bocanegra (Fulham) --Eddie Pope (NY Metrostars) Keeper: Brad Friedel (Blackburn) OR Kasey Keller (Tottenham...on loan to Southampton) OR Tim Howard (Man Utd.)
"Likely" England line-up as follows; Owen (R Madrid) Rooney (Man U) Bridge (Chelsea) Gerrard (Liverpool) Lampard (Chelsea) Beckham (R Madrid) Cole (Arsenal) Ferdinand (Man U) Campbell (Arsenal) G Neville (Man U) Robinson (Spurs) In all honesty the only position you could see a US player breaking in is at Goalkeeper.
Even then as things stand only Friedel and if he's fit and on form. The days of Calamity James are thankfully over. Maybe Keller as third choice, although considering his age and lack of games this season up until now, most coaches would go with a young prospect like Green or Kirkland (now he's playing for Liverpool). Howard would have been in last season, but being number 2 behind Carroll this season would cost him. Maybe their left wing Beasley would be worth a look in the squad, got pace and playing the odd decent game for PSV. Although if England go to play 4-3-3 or if Downing keeps progressing then probably not.
Thanks, I was wondering about the English line-up as well. England has a great squad right now. 2006 should be very exciting!
For the squad yes, for the starting line-up no. With Cole at left-back you need a left-midfield player with good defensive capabilities to ensure you maximise the benefits of Cole's attacking play - that is why Bridge would seem to be a good fit (although I would still like to see SGE swapping them round and have Bridge at the back and Cole in midfield). From what I have seen of DMB he is far from the best of defenders.
I think that Beasley would be competitive as well but I'd have to see more of him to be certain. I still think that Bridge or Cole would have the edge at the moment notwithstanding the fact that they're not natural midfielders. Having said that, is Beasley?
You hear wrong. Surprisingly he's a great defender, despite his size, his speed and his great work rate make him a very effective defender from the wings. He's a fantastic "hassler" of opposing midfielders, allowing the defense time to recover. He's of no use on set pieces of course, except as a counter-attack outlet.
Have you ever seen him play with the USMNT or in MLS? He may not be the best defender but if he has to defend he can defend and do what it takes.....dont let his size fool you.
How I would love to see a meaningful match with both these teams to see what would happen. I think that the US has some players that could surely compete for positions on the English squad.
From the looks of that lineup it seems like the only places that are mildy open are left mid, right fullback, and perhaps goalie. Could Carlos Bocanegra challenge Neville? I know Bocanegra is more a center back, and then a left back, and lastly a right back, but perhaps he could challenge there. I don't get to see too many Fulham games so I don't really know of his current form, but my impression of Neville has always been that he's a great player, but less so than Cole, Ferdinand, and Campbell. That may well be wrong...and Bocanegra more likely than not would not compete for that spot. But, I think that if you are going to pick a US midfielder to challenge for a starting spot in the English squad it has to be Landon Donovan. Granted, he doesn't play left mid, but his is a better player than Beasley. He could, I'm sure, play left mid if called upon. He is by far the most dangerous US player and has been since '02. Beasley is good, don't get me wrong, but Donovan is a class above anyone that has ever played for the US as far as I'm concerned. He is probably just as fast as Beasley, yet he is bigger and a much better playmaker. He and Beasley are basically the US' counterattack, now with Eddie Johnson perhaps. And I think Donovan could slot into almost any team in the world as a starter in the midfield. He is vastly underrated in Europe because he has been playing in MLS, but he regularly outplays every US player who starts in the EPL or Dutch League or elsewhere. That said, the fact that Donovan typically plays as an AM or a right sided player might make it tough for him to fit into the English squad as obvioiusly Beckham isn't going anywhere soon. Furthermore, Donovan lacks the size of Lampard and Gerrard, so in that formation perhaps he doesn't get the start. In keeper, like others have said, it is more or less a toss up. Friedel is quite good and respected in the EPL, as is Keller. Robinson isn't necessarily the top EPL keeper, so there would be a competition for that spot. Hmmm, well I guess that the US would be pretty much in trouble in one-on-one matchups vs. England, but I think there are a number of US players that are very close in quality to the English starters (Donovan, Beasley, Bocanegra, perhaps Eddie Johnson, John O'Brien, Reyna??) so that might make a game between the two teams pretty competitive, though more often than not England would prevail. Especially with the strike duo of Rooney/Owen, that would be tough for the US defense to deal with since we have mostly big defenders, but they aren't of world class speed.
The current England line-up (first-choice), includes Butt not Bridge, although no-one over here can believe it! Robinson was a pile of sh!te at Leeds and still is - I would pick Howard and Friedel before him. Gary Neville is a retarded spaz who only gets in because no-one else in England (not even my wife) plays right back, and Carlos Bocanegra (when fully fit) would get the nod over him. Assuming Butt is in the starting line-up, I would pick Olive Oil or Jessica Rabbit in his place, let alone a real person, or a real footballer - so John O'Brien (fit, or on one leg), DMB, or Lando would be in! No-one else would make the squad!
Bocanegra is a left-back isnt he?? whats the point of picking a left-back in nevilles position .neville is vastly experienced and under-rated . as for howard!!! hahahahahhahahah.
Butt is rubbish and I doubt even Sven will have him around much longer, the rest of your post is complete and utter toilet though. Slagging off Robinson and Neville like that just makes you sound like a retard, or a prize dickhead.
I'd take a healthy O'Brien over any of the midfielders listed thus far. And what about the coaches? Just think what Arena could do with all those "world class" English players It's all subjective.
No, Bocanegra is a centre back, who has adapted to playing at full back, on both sides. hahahahahahaha - you started it! Voted best 'keeper in the EPL by the players last year? Must be a tosser!
I do hope you are joking - otherwise there is a padded cell and a special jacket waiting for you somewhere not too far away.....
last year?? where is he now? on the bench after a series of fvck ups. He is the yanks version of david james. Bocanegra is a left back most of the time .A reckless one. He hasnt done much for fulhams defence or the defence of the yanks national team .Neville has 10 years of experience in the champions league ,internationals ,top level club football ,etc..
This Bocanegra has only played left back when he has played, and even then has looked average in a mediocre Fulham side. Put him at right back even ahead of naturally two-footed superior players like J'Loyd Samuel would be a joke. Let alone a vastly experienced Neville who was very solid in Euro 2004 and won trophies aplenty at ManYoo. As for Howard being named best keeper last year - isn't the be all and end all and I think this award had a lot more to do with it being his first year and a lot of other good keepers like Niemi and Given splitting votes. To give you an example of this I remember Neil Sullivan winning it a few years ago - the very next season he was crap and lost his place at Tottenham. Anyone who has to sit behind Roy Carroll at club level is not an International class player. Maybe with improvements to his concentration and if he can perform better under pressure in big games, then he could be considered. Also he would need to be number 1 again.
Yeah well ,you did know how this thread was gonna go as soon as it was started didnt you?? when I wake up tomorrow I expect a 100+ reply thread with the mindless ramblings of various sams army dweebs.
