Cirkin was dominant down the left for Sunderland last night too. I can’t help but think the sending off vs Ireland has gone against him just as Jimmy Jay Morgan has suffered selection wise since his discretion vs Portugal.
Jack Hinshelwood can become England regular, says Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5905637/2024/11/07/jack-hinshelwood-england-brighton/ Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler is backing Jack Hinshelwood to become a full England international. Hinshelwood has earned three Under-21s caps this season and Hurzeler believes the versatile 19-year-old is destined to be a key player for both club and country. “In understanding the game, in recognising the spaces, finding the right angle to the team-mate, having the first touch, having good passing, I think he is already one of the best,” said Hurzeler. “Now it is about consistency, showing these actions for 90 minutes, not only in phases of the game. We try to help him, but what he is doing so far is impressive. “He will be for sure a big part of the future of this club and hopefully also for the English national team, so I will call Thomas (Tuchel) and give him advice about this player.” Hinshelwood has played in central midfield in recent matches. That was his position when he progressed through Brighton’s academy, after making most of 22 Premier League appearances at right-back. He returned to the starting line-up for last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Liverpool following a calf injury. Sweden international Yasin Ayari, Hinshelwood’s midfield partner for that match, is due to resume training after suffering an ankle injury at Anfield. Cameroon international midfielder Carlos Baleba, restricted to the bench at Liverpool by a knee issue, is available for Manchester City’s visit to the Amex Stadium on Saturday. Interim England head coach Lee Carsley is due to name his final squad before Thomas Tuchel takes over later on Thursday.
Would really be something if they were still holding that against him but it wouldn't surprise me. Can't hold things like that against young players for that long.
Was it that egregious? How would that work would Ben Futcher, or Lee Carsley suggest his name and an FA higher up like McDermott (who wasn't at the FA in 2018, but must know Cirkin from his Tottenham days) turn it down? Really don't think that's likely, especially as he's been in u18/20 squads since and not had discipline issues in his pro career.
Lee Carsley is too high up the Coventry next manager odds list for my liking. If he quit pre U21 euros Futcher would just get it be default.
With the left back thing I really think you should be stepping in as the ‘technical director’ and at least asking questions. This simply can’t be happening. McDermott is in charge of ‘strategy’ and is working close to the youth teams. So, we have a big issue with a dearth of left backs at senior level. We have at least three uncapped options performing at a good level for a few seasons. So, why are we not playing a genuine left back in a dead rubber game against Azerbaijan at home? That happened recently. It is unacceptable. There is a question to be raised as to whether we should even be playing makeshift full backs at youth level. It worked fine for Carsley at the last U21 Euros but is it worth it long term?
The last time we took two genuine left backs to the U21 finals was 2017 (Chilwell and Targett). Only one in the others after that - Luke Thomas (2023), Ryan Sessegnon (2021), Jay Dasilva (2019). 2015 - Garbutt and Targett. 2013 - Jack Robinson and Danny Rose (Pearce picked and played Rose as a winger. Also gave Jack Robinson the number 9 shirt. Maybe he cursed us ). 2011 - Kieran Gibbs and Ryan Bertrand - Our strongest duo ever.
The Squad Goalkeepers: James Beadle (Sheffield Wednesday, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion), Matthew Cox (Brentford), James Trafford (Burnley) Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Charlie Cresswell (FC Toulouse), Callum Doyle (Norwich City, on loan from Manchester City), Jack Hinshelwood (Brighton & Hove Albion), Bashir Humphreys (Burnley, loan from Chelsea), Tino Livramento (Newcastle United), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool) Midfielders: Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Jobe Bellingham (Sunderland), Archie Gray (Tottenham Hotspur), Hayden Hackney (Middlesbrough), James McAtee (Manchester City), Tyler Morton (Liverpool) Forwards: Liam Delap (Ipswich Town), Tyler Dibling (Southampton), Jamie Gittens (Borussia Dortmund), Omari Hutchinson (Ipswich Town), Sam Iling-Junior (Bologna, on loan from Aston Villa), Jaden Philogene (Aston Villa), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), Dane Scarlett (Oxford United, loan from Tottenham Hotspur)
Still no recognised left back option being selected. Why we are doing this is puzzling. Still, it’s a strong squad and good to see what Jobe can do.
Humphreys over Burrows or Cirkin has got to be some sort of joke. I like most of the other selections but I simply cannot understand what they're playing at with this left-footed CB at left-back fetish. It feels like they're just trying to copy the Arsenal/Man City trend which devoid of any independent thought or deep analysis.
It’s actually infuriating at this point. It’s not even like we’d be scraping the barrel with Burrows or Cirkin, they’re genuinely good options.
Exactly. If you want to have one left-footed CB as a left-back option then fine, but why you wouldn't even want to the option of someone like Burrows, who provides a completely different dimension, is just baffling. Humphreys isn't even getting regular minutes at Burnley. He was an unused sub last night and largely struggled when he was at Swansea last season too. It's extra annoying because there's never any scrutiny on selections at this level.
It’s issues like this when I wish we had some journalists who are interested in England youth development asking these questions but unfortunately they don’t really care but then get their knickers in a twist when in two years time we lack left backs in the seniors.
The only thing I can think of us that Futcher has looked at Arsenal and Man City and decided that's what he needs to be doing. His tactics in-game are very heavily based on what those two do - attack with a 3-2-5, strict positions, defend 4-4-2 - so it makes me think he really is just trying to carbon copy it. It just reeks of incompetence because not only is he devoid of his own ideas but it's also a terrible way to coach young players. Taking temporary tactical trends from senior football and instilling them into youth players is incredibly regressive and is rarely done for the long-term benefit of the players, but more the short-term benefit of the coach.
