This is Carsley’s last U21 team and the style was still very evident - Carsley was just very good at putting players in the right positions and getting them to move well within the system.
Rogers has a better chance than Hall in the short term as he is playing well at club level while Hall is still mostly on the bench for Newcastle.
Sure but when all is said and done, they’ve actually done pretty well tonight? Could’ve scored 7 here against a much better side than Luxembourg. Age old issues in midfield with Scott and Morton taking poor touches in dangerous positions seems to have been the main concern. I’m not deep into studying systems mind.
After tonight’s match the decisions to start Anderson and Doyle against N.I appear a little more strange to me.
There needs to be a coherent approach/plan to what we desire from a coaching team in this age group. We did the ex-player thing. Trying to give opportunity to the upcoming coach. Platt and Pearce. It wasn’t a complete disaster. I think Pearce was a decent role model with regards what it means to play for England etc. There was no regard for player ID or playing approach. So what was the actual point? It was pretty much pick a team and get on with it. Pearce lasted way too long and got found out three campaigns earlier than he left. Southgate was a bit different because he didn’t even want the job and at least he had an idea of how he wanted to play. Whether it worked in practice is another thing. Was he that great at identifying players in specific roles? Probably not. Boothroyd got the job because he was deemed an experienced club manager. That is what was desired for the role. Team to play like a club team. It was a complete disaster. One of the most idiotic reigns I can recall in sports management. They just lucked out with Carsley. I don’t think they expected what they got at all. We will struggle to find a coaching team to replicate. It was probably the most enjoyable reign I’ve witnessed of an England team at any level. With Futcher he has barely coached in the system. I don’t really know what they could even go off to give him the role. It is quite a hard role to fill but you need criteria and some evidence of competence.
Hall has started 2 games and Lloyd Kelly has started 2 so far Looks like Howe is starting Hall in games where we want to play more attacking but trusts Kelly more defensively
Just looking at Futcher’s record, he doesn’t actually seemed to have managed many games as a head coach at any level. I think ideally you want someone with a recent track record in academy football, working with young players. Someone like a Justine Cochrane, Hayden Mullens, Joe Edwards, Wayne Burnett, Michael Beale (I know his name is tarnished now but still think he’s a good coach).
The future's bright, the future's entertaining….#ENG U21s 4 Austria U21s 1. It looks a stronger team with Wharton, Elliott and Philogene in but they both pulled out. For what it’s worth, I think the most likely looking England senior players from this camp seem to be Quansah, THB, Hall and Rogers.

Chelsea want to sell Carney Chukwuemeka and are not interested in loaning him out, according to reports. (The Sun)
Adam Wharton was managing his load during the break - forcing his withdrawal from the England U21 squad - but he is available. 'He needed last week to train individually. [Since] Tuesday, he had every single training session. Angus Kinnear (Leeds United CEO) reveals that Bayern and Real Madrid were interested in Archie Gray in January, before he ultimately joined Tottenham in the summer: "Real Madrid were interested in Archie Gray, Bayern Munich were interested. The way we were able to keep him [in January] was threefold [..] Archie Gray is a player who will ultimately play for Real Madrid or Bayern Munich" [The Square Ball podcast] Enzo Maresca: “I really, really like Carney Chukwuemeka... but we have so many attacking midfielders”. “Unfortunately, we didn't find solutions in the summer. Now we can use him”.
I’d be interested to know what Southampton’s plans for Nathan Wood and Ronnie Edwards are. Both bought fairly cheaply in the summer but don’t even make the bench. I thought at least one of them would be loaned out this season.
