1) 19/20 - U18 Foster, U19, Simpson, U20 Downing 20/21 - U18 Downing, U19 Foster, U20 Simpson 21/22 - U18 Simpson, U19 Downing, U20 Foster 2) Or, Simpson is expected to take the U21 job after 20/21... 3) Or, Downing + Simpson are phased out when they reach the end and in 20/21 there's a new U21 coach and two people promoted into this cycle. i.e 19/20 - U17 Betsy, U18 Foster, U19 Simpson, U20 Downing 20/21 - U17 Cochrane, U18 Betsy, U19 Foster, U20 Simpson 21/22 - U17 Skyrme, U18 Cochrane, U19 Betsy, U20 Foster That'd be a real promising development.
Wonder how ruthless they going to be with 99s not in the u21s squad. I've heard Brennan was selected for this squad but has a choice to make with being in the Wales u21s. Supposedly the u20s are for players with senior football experience so they may go straight 2000s and 2001s with quite a few 2000s being in u21 squad.
Some interesting new names or returning names. Goalkeepers: Josef Bursik (Stoke City), Josh Griffiths (West Bromwich Albion), Thomas McGill (Brighton & Hove Albion) Defenders: Nathan Ferguson (West Bromwich Albion), Lewis Gibson (Everton), Tariq Lamptey (Chelsea), Joel Latibeaudiere (Manchester City), Japhet Tanganga (Tottenham Hotspur), Brandon Williams (Manchester United) Midfielders: Andre Dozzell (Ipswich Town), Conor Gallagher (Charlton Athletic, loan from Chelsea), Ryan Giles (Shrewsbury Town, loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers), Angel Gomes (Manchester United), Jamie Shackleton (Leeds United), Callum Slattery (Southampton), Marcus Tavernier (Middlesbrough) Forwards: Luke Bolton (Luton Town, loan from Manchester City), Jack Clarke (Leeds United, loan from Tottenham Hotspur), Jonathan Leko (Charlton Athletic, loan from West Bromwich Albion), Danny Loader (Reading), Luke Thomas (Barnsley)
First time call-ups for Brandon Williams , Luke Thomas, Jack Clarke & Ryan Giles ? 99s Tanganga, Shackleton, Dozzell, Slattery, Tavernier, Bolton, Leko, Thomas 00s Bursik, McGill, Lamptey, Ferguson, Latibeaudiere, Gibson, Williams, Giles, Gallagher, Gomes, Clarke, Loader 01s Griffiths Some Ipswich fans will say how is Downes not there and Dozzell is , even if different roles. Tom Edwards and Tyrese Campbell in the mix at Stoke. Brereton injured at Blackburn. Hirst just played his first Leicester u23s game. Sterling not playing for Wigan yet. Nothing major missing out though. Not there from 2000s. Mixture of injuries or selection. Bogle, Eyoma, Harper, F.Nmecha, McEachran, Smith-Rowe, Poveda, Walker. Others to watch over the season Ben.Johnson, J.Richardson, L.Davis, Vokins, M.Longstaff. Bit mixed at the moment for Kirby, O'Riley & T.Richards. Bird now behind Knight and Sibley for Derby opportunities in midfield.
This squad is probably a few weeks early for Smith Rowe. Was kind of hoping to see O’Riley in there, but hard to justify form wise.
Never really seen Leko do much until I saw him for Charlton the other night. Playing as part of front two and he was finding a way to utilise his speed for a change. Did fade in the 2nd half but encouraging seeing him perform like that after the rep he had a few years ago at WBA.
Do like the squads overall. Can knit-pick here and there but they seem to be actually 1) finally trying new natural left backs!!!!! and 2) being pretty ruthless. Poveda didn't play in City's last two games, presume he's injured?
He hssnt been with City 23s last few games but then same can be said of Eric Garcia and Aleix Garcia because I think those 3 were with City first team. Intetestingly typed his name into twitter and Colombian fans are aware of him calling him and Eddy Salcedo to be in their u23 squad announced recently.
I can see why Dozzell stays in, because he always does - but Downes looks streets ahead of him at the moment and not just due to physicality. He's been best player on the pitch every game so far this season and looks as though he has just got it and clicked.
It’s ridiculous that he’s still playing U23 football, OG should either use him for the first team which imo he should as he’s already an upgrade on most of their midfield players or just get him out on loan now. He’s just wasting away, such negligence of a big talent.
Hopefully nothing serious but the little niggling one's are just as much of a concern. Emile Smith Rowe picked up yet another injury this evening. Unsure on severity but had to be replaced in U23s comeback against Derby. Goals from Burton and Balogun.— Arsenal (@ArsenalSTH) August 30, 2019
