Just looking at the squad numbers on the UEFA website, generally similar to the last qualifiers in September. Reuell Walters (2) presumably in at right back. Midfielder Charlie Webster has number four & Mainoo ten. Isaac Mabaya is another Liverpool player currently injured who was involved in the previous qualifying round. At least there is Radio commentary. ⚽️ Live on Wednesday from 7pm (7.30pm KO):UEFA Euros Elite QualifierEngland MU19s Hungary MU19s at the Bescot StadiumLive match commentary with Luke Edwards and Richard Worton onhttps://t.co/a2x4nEIMvrORhttps://t.co/nfGV8lTzBdTweet us @LiveSportsFM #YoungLions ⚽️ pic.twitter.com/iDFT537Nc4— Live Sports FM (@LiveSportsFM) March 21, 2023
1-0 FT Iceland drew 2-2 with Turkey (Two players sent off for Turkey). Iceland next for us on Saturday.
No goals in the first half but looks like Iceland were the better team. Not helped by Ben Nelson being subbed off with an injury.
HT #ENG U19s 0 Iceland U19s: Fairly sterile so far as games at this level sometimes are. England dominating possession without much threat. Best chances to hosts in spell before quarter-hour.#LUFC's Darko Gybabi not involved, presumably injured, #DRFC's Ben Nelson limped off.— Stuart Rayner (@sturayner) March 25, 2023
Can't work out whats going on with that line up, surely Lewis Hall isn't centre back and Mainoo isn't a striker? I can only assume its yet another terribly coached 3-4-3 that's been forced onto players who do not fit it.
The goal has provoked #ENG U19s into actually trying to get the ball into the box. They've gone from a possession exercise to a game of football at the flick of a switch. Pity they didn't flick it about an hour ago. Hey ho.0-1— Stuart Rayner (@sturayner) March 25, 2023
Will be up against it to qualify now, though still doable. We seem to struggle against these kind of very direct, organised sides. Not that I think there are particularly high hopes for the 04's anyway, not too much talent in the squad which hasn't been helped by a lot of promotion of 04's to higher groups and injuries, doesn't help that behind them we have the 05's who our worst age group and unable to supply much talent to make up for the losses. Feels like we could have optimised our resources a lot better than we have done to give us a better chance of qualification here (not that we should really be losing to Iceland mind you). Keeping Lewis with the group for qualifying, Devine staying in this group given the strength of central midfielders in the u20s, would argue Bynoe-Gittens who there's basically no chance of playing in the world cup would have been better used here also.
Yeah, we should have picked a stronger squad. Losing captain Rico Lewis is just a massive loss and he’s not even starting now for the U21’s in a friendly. Looked ridiculous at the time of squad selection. Sounds like the team were for 60+ mins playing passive play with not enough players in attacking areas. Can’t always get away with that in these games.
Once again they piss around with Lewis Hall out of position and pick central midfielders who aren't better than him.
Embarrassing result this! Coach should be fired if he can’t manage to put out a side good enough to beat Iceland. Not good enough!
They lost both Braybrooke and Lewis who were the two best players in the group. I agree with Snrub in that there's one or two too many 04s promoted to the u20s. I think the the 04 group is a pretty decent one though, regardless of this result. If Braybrooke, Lewis, Scarlett, K Gordon, Devine, Norton-Cuffy, Shoretire and Bynoe-Gittens were with them then they'd be hard to beat at this level.
If these formations and selections are accurate this Simon Rusk's choices are.....interesting....to say the least. Struggling on with Lewis Hall at centre back for some reason, and not picking any of the 4 centre forwards as a striker in the 4-4-2 formation seems an unusual choice. George Hall as a wide midfielder also bizarre. And why is Mainoo, who's a deep lying central midfielder in his club career so attacking for the under 19's?
Fairly sure it's 343, Hall-Phillips-Walters left to right at CB, Chambers and Cozier-Duberry at WB, Webster and Gyabi the two CMs, GHall and Mainoo behind Perkins in attack.
0-0 at half time in both group games so a goal would still take us through as it stands. Seems like a dominant performance so far without being able to capitalise, goals have been a real issue this meet up for this group.
2-0, George Hall. Unfortunately Iceland have taken the lead at the same time so England out as it stands.
