Capello was looking for any excuse to leave ever since the end of the 2010 WC.

He just didn't want to look like he was quitting and the useless FA didn't want to be the ones to make the first move to sack him.

The John Terry 'captains armband' bollocks was the perfect excuse for him to leave without either party having egg on their face. Neither side actually gave two shits whether the captain was Terry, Gerrard, Lampard or whoever else from that 'golden generation' of failures.

 

The FA were genuinely not keen at all on Terry being captain while facing a court case.

He left it quite a while. It was February 2012! 20 months after the World Cup.

 

What I meant. Taylor did not resign. He was sacked. He should have resigned. Capello, should have resigned due to the failure of 2010. But did not. He resigned later due to some captaincy issue.

So yes, the difference is that Keegan knew his limit and at least did not ruin another tournament. That is were his integrity comes from. Taylor ruined two tournaments, one were he did not even qualify, and would have ruined more if he could.

 

They were not keen because they were trying to protect their image. Thats it. It had nothing to do with anything football related.

And the 1.5yr gap between him leaving after South Africa doesn't debunk the fact that Capello was desperate to leave England since the WC.

 

Exactly, if not for this issue. Capello would have ruined another tournament if he could. Ok, what we got for 2012 was even worse. But the point is if you are not good enough, resign and at least give the FA a chance to find someone good enough.

 

Regarding managers and captaincy issues and resigning over them. The FA should demand that Tuchel make Harry Maguire captain

 

I think thats an "alternative" view of what happend. If so Cappello actually showed the lowest possible integrity, he wanted to resign, but needed an excuse. And if he did not get it, he would continue. I think we need more captaincy issues if that is what it takes to get coaches we want to resign, to do it...

I was still trying to get out of the Wembley car park with my Dad when we heard on the radio that Keegan had resigned. Very few coaches would behave with that honesty and integrity.

The saddest thing about 2010 is that we actually got the luckiest draw possible. But wasted it. Now how the old 32 teams format worked. Group winners were set up to meet each other in the quarters. That means top seeded teams. Who are top teams, with one possible exception, the host.And that is what we got. If we won our group, we were set up to face the winner of the group were South Africa was the top seeded team. In addition the other teams in our group were pretty weak. Wow, thats a reasonable path to a semi. But no, despite multiple chances to win the group, we completely blew. So then what? Germany ...

 

Uruguay were pretty good at that World Cup. Wouldn’t have been an easy QF at all.

 

They very nearly lost to Ghana. It was the one were Suarez saved the ball with his hand, and Ghana missed the penalty. And no matter what. Ghana - Uruguay. I'd choose that over Germany-Argentina.

And another thing. When you have WCs like we did in 1998 and 2010. It really hurts your FIFA ranking and your seeding and you can end up in some terrible groups in the next WC. In 2002 we coped. But in 2014. Lo and behold, Italy, Uruguay and Hodgson. Ok, group exit then.

 

If we get through the Nations League knockouts it just feels right we will get France, Germany or (If Pep joins) Italy at some point next year.
