Either Branthwaite's hamstring is not as bad as reported - or Tuchel has just tossed it off once he got past 30-odd names
The full article mentions Trent, Gallagher and Scott also on the 55 player list. Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler Luke Shaw, Danny Welbeck and Jarrad Branthwaite are set to be included in the provisional World Cup squad Thomas Tuchel will submit to Fifa. Tuchel must give a maximum of 55 names before today’s deadline, then will name a final 26 next week at Wembley. Tuchel’s longlist, which is not made public, is effectively all those available, including players such as Shaw, Welbeck and Branthwaite who have yet to play under the German coach. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher and Alex Scott were not in the March squad but are available for the World Cup, where England’s first match is June 17. Shaw has been excellent for Manchester United as they have returned to the Champions League. Branthwaite’s only cap was against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the build-up to Euro 2024 but Gareth Southgate did not include him in the final squad. Welbeck’s last cap was in September 2018, after he went to the World Cup earlier that year. There have been calls for him to be Harry Kane’s back-up after his 14 goals for Brighton this season
This generation has a bit more balance but not quite the depth in defence. In midfield its getting very close and attack wise Kanes as good as Owen or Rooney. Still think the golden generation overall had the better players but either ran into even more stacked teams or bad luck.
Tuchel has picked 51 different players in his squads so far (47 have got onto the pitch). Shaw, Welbeck and Branthwaite would make it 54. It could possibly mean only be one more player is left unknown on the provisional squad. Or there are a couple more and he’s completely dropped certain options that he does not seem fond of e.g. Ivan Toney.
Probably hasn’t included Walker on the list as he has retired and probably hasn’t included Steele on the list as he is likely to be going as a non playing member.
Good point but I think Steele likely will be included. You pretty much pick six keepers in the preliminary squad. Cover for all three of your keepers. May aswell give that sixth spot (that has no chance of going) to someone who is definitely going to be in camp.
You probably right. (Through with Tuchel going to watch Jack Butland the other week it could be him during the non playing role instead) With the other two being Ramsdale and Pope?
I mean he fits the bill as an experienced player who could be an alternative to Steele in being the non playing one,
Gallagher starts for Spurs. Austin, Spence, Maddison and Gray are on the bench. Justin and Calvert-Lewin start for Leeds. Byram, Chadwick and Longstaff are on the bench.
I think if Carrick had gone it would have made a huge difference. Also losing Scholes was a big blow. We could have played 433 with Carrick as the holder and Lampard and Gerrard in front. Or Lampard and Gerrard with Scholes as the 10
Carrick did go to that tournament, and we played 4-5-1 in both the knock out games at that tournament, and Carrick even started the RO16 game against Ecuador! (which was an incredibly stodgy performance even by the standards of that era of England games)
Spurs are so decimated that the only option on their bench that could potentially influence the game offensively is a player that has not played in a year (Maddison).
And it won’t just be one season in the Championship- think a Leicester style double relegation will be possible.
Look at my club. We've Been fighting relegation for most of the past 15 years since we were relegated
