Ah the painful memories. In particular the 96 shoot out against Germany. England had 5 very good takers for the 5 first pens. They scored 9 out of 9 including 4 against Spain (Sherringham did not have to take one in that case). But seemingly no plan for what to do in the case of sudden death. And that was it. A rare opportunity wasted on bad preparations ... And from then it only got worse. Seemingly no preparations for shoot outs at all, for 22 years ..
I always think looking back if we'd have taken le tissier and gazza to 98, we might have beaten Argentina on penalties
I suspect if you put Le Tisser on for 10 man England against Argentina it may not well have made it to penalties. For all his abilities probably the last man in the premier league you'd want for that situation!
Anderson starts for Nottingham Forest. Yates, McAtee, Whitehall, Sinclair and Hutchinson are on the bench. Pope, Burn, Hall and Murphy start for Newcastle. Ramsdale, Tripper, Barnes. Willock, Ramsey and Gordon are on the bench. Henderson, Wharton and Mitchell start for Crystal Palace. Clyne and Hughes are on the bench. Pickford, Tarkowski, Keane, Iroegbunam, Garner and Dewsbury-Hall start for Palace. Dibling, Armstrong, McNeil and George are on the bench. Walker and Anthony start for Burnley. Humphreys, Ward-Prowse, Laurent, Mings, Konsa, Barkley, Rogers and Watkins start for Aston Villa. Abraham and Sancho are on the bench. Good to see Hall starting.
Tuchel is at Palace v Everton. . Tarkowski has just scored in front of him. Anthony has scored for Burnley.
This makes absolutely no sense to me, Howe has basically stifled both attacking full back positions in this game. You have Burn who isn’t an attacking fullback and Hall who will be less effective as a right back. This makes no sense to me.
Why Howe play's Burn at leftback is up there with who shot JFK as one of the world's greatest mystery's.
One of the biggest moments players ever plus his off the ball work rate was poor from what I remember about watching him.
The officiating in England is atrocious. Walker stands on Buendia's heel in the box, takes his boot off and rips his sock, refs says no pen and the VAR doesn't even ask him to look at it. Most obvious pen ever but because it was accidental or because they didn't want to make the ref look daft they just decide they don't fancy it.
Bowen starts for West Ham. Walker-Peters, Kilman, Scarles, Potts and Wilson are on the bench. White, Lewis-Skelly, Rice, Eze and Saka start for Arsenal. Dowman and Madueke are on the bench.
Reminder that in 98 when Le Tissier scored a hat trick for England B, in the days before he’d leaked the team to his brother who rang up a Radio station in Jersey and announced the team a day before the game. Le Tissier didn’t go to the World Cup because he’s a bit of an idiot.
