Sadly I can genuinely see some Arsenal fans blaming international football.

Would Barnes be a suitable replacement in the 26 if Saka was ruled out?

On social media I think Bowen starting would go down better than Madueke.

    The issue is this England starting team is just nowhere near as good in reality as it is on paper or the avg person would think. And also when you compare it to the team that started vs France four yrs ago;
Only Guehi, Anderson gets in that team in Qatar

Even the players that would start in both were all better 4yrs ago than they currently are.

Plus I think we haven't had a tournament to bring expectations back to earth for a while. There was one poster on here (can't remember his name) who's predicting we are gonna win two out of the next three tournaments. Just complete insanity from some of the fanbase.

A bad tournament with a manager who’s contracted for another 2 years but then becomes really disliked by fans and the media could be very depressing to sit through.

It's depressing as hell. I honestly thought we'd have players in better form. But too many just haven't produced. We are as far behind the likes of France as we've ever been. Not to mention Spain Argentina. We've got a far better chance in 2 years

And if the discourse do start becoming toxic again, it will undo all the progress that Southgate made to improve the culture around England.

I really hope we don't go back to that, some have already forgotten just how grim it was for England fans for about a decade approx 2006-2016

And that will be very hard to rebuild again. 2018 was such a shock because no one expected such a recovery in an achievement and respect for the team after 2016. I was expecting a defeat to Panama!

Some of you wont be happy unless we crash out after losing all three matches

Aren't some of you tired of being constantly negative ?

I'm not happy. I'm usually the over the top optimist. But I Don't see anything with this England team other than kane that suggests we'll go further than the quarter finals. Then again Argentina won the World Cup with an average team

Liverpool have joined Manchester United in the race to sign England midfielder Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, who want at least £80m for the 22-year-old. (Talksport), external

Bayern Munich's interest in Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, 25, is deemed serious by the Magpies but they will demand close to £80m for the England international. (The I)

Well, an average team + Messi, a not insignificant caveat.

I'd agree that the media and average fan and media tends to overrate the side it this seems to veer in the other direction.

Hard to say how you can genuinely believe all the players who'd start 4 years ago were better then. Bellingham and Rice have both developed into significantly better players and far more influence at their best than they had back then. Can't really see how you would see the likes of Kane, and Pickford getting worse either.

Of those still around only really stones has shown significant decline from that 11, and saka is clearly suffering this season. Probably the full backs from that full side would make this side but the other players are not clear cut at all.

Ramsdale, Livramento, Hall, Miley. Ramsey and Barnes start for Newcastle. Pope, Trippier, Burn, Willock and Murphy are on the bench.
Hill, Scott and Tavernier start for Bournemouth. Smith is on the bench.

Justin, Bogle and Calvert-Lewin start for Leeds. Longstaff is on the bench.
Bentley, Gomes and Armstrong start for Wolves. Brooks, Olagunju and Edozie are on the bench.

Gordon absent due to hip flexor injury. Said not to be a long term issue.
Burn on the bench again. Will Tuchel notice that when making his decision?

Can't possibly consider burn if he can't even get in the Newcastle team. The scary thing is tuchel will take him regardless

It does feel like Tuchel could be stubborn but is Burn over Maguire really worth it. Stones/Konsa/Guehi are his main 3 with Chalobah likely to go as well.

Watching the Newcastle game, they've nothing up front. Osula is bang average. Woltermade seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. Isak was crucial to their success

Hall subbed at half time for Trippier. Hopefully not an injury.

Gallagher and Solanke start for Spurs. Austin, Spence, Maddison and Gray are on the bench,
Hinshelwood and Welbeck start for Brighton. Steele is on the bench.

Spence again on the bench - will that cost him a place at the World Cup. I’m unsure because Tuchel does really seem to like him. Good to see Maddison back fit.

Scott is really looking the part in midfield nowadays, not at the level of Anderson but certainly the closest of the rest of our midfielders.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a big move at the end of the season, and he will be very unfortunate if he misses out on the world cup squad (as I'd expect to happen). Man United could do worse than trying to recreate that Anderson Scott midfield.

    Of no.
    BBC saying hamstring.

At least one of Spence or White is surely going to go at this rate. Spence will be unpopular with a lot of fans and a lot of the media and some fans really don’t want White nowhere near the squad. .

Or he could call up the Real Madrid starting right back or if it’s left back he’s concerned about there’s also the starting left back for Man Utd. We’re not short of options here really even though it’s way too early to write off Livramento as we don’t know how serious it is.
