Can’t see Trafford getting promoted either. Nowhere near the level required yet. Especially with the added context of two big U21 games coming up. Morgan Rogers is probably the most ready to make an impact from the latest U21 squad. Maybe he gets promoted if his club form is still strong. You could see him impacting games from the bench (especially in this group).
Lee Carsley talks Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold… frightening when you think England have Bellingham, Foden and Palmer all to come back… https://t.co/KFewWrRU1G— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) September 11, 2024
Rogers is really impressive, but there are at least 8 other senior players for that no. 10/ attacking midfielder spot, which makes his promotion unlikely: Bellingham Foden Palmer Grealish Eze Gibbs-White Maddison Smith-Rowe
Yeah it’s a fair point and is it worth to continually make the U21’s weaker when you’re likely to be leaving out some of these players from the senior squad. U21’s is still an important wheel that still needs to be turned. Smith-Rowe still needs to do a lot more though for Fulham to be considered.
He was playing off the left in the last U21 game and was very effective. The left wing/inside forward position is pretty open for us at the moment with Gordon/Grealish/Rashford/Sterling in the mix. I think Rogers offers a lot of what Gordon does and if his final product can be better (Gordon lacks here) then he has a good chance of some minutes at senior level.
As a point of interest, what are you seeing in Garner and Trafford that makes you think they're deserving of an England place?
Garner just as a reward for doing well with the U21’s but Trafford mainly because the Daily Mail said had he got a move to the PL there was a fair chance he would have got in as Carsley is a big fan.

Predicting six England U21 stars to be in Carsley’s 2026 World Cup squad
Sorry, I thought you'd been watching them. I was just going to say, I thought Garner hadn't started a game all season through injury and, from the little I've seen, Trafford still looks a tad unconvincing, even in the Championship.
I think its easy to pass it around like that when you're playing Finland, the trick is passing it around like that when you're playing France or Spain.
Well you might be waiting a long time as pretty much no team will have 73% possession ('pass it around like that') against the current iteration of those teams.
It certainly wasn't easy for England in the past. England's qualifications have with rare exceptions always been very stodgy games where we'd often have real battles against pretty much any team in the top 100. The quality difference in England post world cup 2018 and pre is incredibly stark. I mean, I remember the golden generation qualifiers and they were almost never convincing performances. Almost always edging through games, often due to a Beckham set piece setting a goal up. We scored 14 goals in 8 games in 2004 qualifying in a group of Turkey, Slovakia, Macedonia, and Liechtenstein. 17 in 10 in 2006 against Poland, Austria, Northern Ireland, Wales and Azerbaijan. I suspect we will always technically lack a Spain (and I think we are unwise to try to replicate them) but the technical quality of these England sides is just so much higher than anything before them.
Yeah, go back and watch some of the more ponderious performances in the past under England managers with negative tactics
Surely the aim should be to marry this new possession based approach with the qualities that have become the hallmark of the English game (power, pace, aggression etc.) It felt like we lost some of those at this summer's Euros. Yes, our football has come a long way technically, tactically and stylistically over the last 10 years, thanks to the influx of elite foreign coaches, but we risk just becoming another powder-puff, keep-ball side that doesn't win anything if that's all we aspire to.
Luke Shaw is progressing well according to Erik Ten Hag but will not be back this week. I do wonder did Carsley will recall him as Colwill and Lewis both did well and Livramento can play there as well. Hall could get promoted as well.
Carsley will recall Shaw if fit and available he's England's best lb, don't think you need to 'wonder' to much.

Unless he has fitness issues, he’s surely back in the team. The only reason Colwill and Lewis have been used is because Shaw has been injured. Ideally, I’m sure his long term aim will to have Shaw and Hall as his left backs going forward.
