Angel Gomes will make his first start for England in the Nations League game with Finland. The 24-year-old has been given the nod to start at Wembley in one of what is expected to be four changes from the 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland.More from @David_Ornstein ⬇️— The Athletic | Football (@TheAthleticFC) September 10, 2024 Pickford TAA Konsa Stones Lewis Gomes Rice Saka Grealish Gordon Kane
saka doesn’t need to play in a glorified friendly he does need to play to try and win the league vs a 115 charge having behemoth he’s our best attacker
There's a balance. I agree that Saka doesn't need to play tonight but over the years Arteta has been frankly shocking at managing Saka's minutes. I'll be astonished if he isn't physically cooked before long.
The baton passes to Rico Lewis, then. For one night only?A piece about a real problem position for England: left-backhttps://t.co/k1n5XJxNkI— Dom Smith (@MrDomSmith) September 10, 2024
As reported in today's newspaper by my colleagues @mcgrathmike and @Matt_Law_DT , a first start for Angel Gomes. Really excited to see how he plays. If he does well I think the England midfield will be built around him. https://t.co/Na2nUfgBjC— Jason Burt (@JBurtTelegraph) September 10, 2024 But presumably not under Carsley considering this writer called for him to be sacked three days ago - or has he forgotten it already.

Excited to see the dynamic of this team, it looks really balanced. Southgate would've played Phillips/Gallagher and Rice in these types of games or even TAA as one of the midfielders and it would just be horribly balanced
I don’t think any of the press who were all saying TAA must be in the midfield have ever said sorry for getting that one wrong. If Gomes does well tonight he won’t be at Lille this next year - being an England starter will see him leave them for sure. Surely come October Bellingham replaces Rice in that line up?
Was Gomes a surprise selection for the U21 Euros starting line up last year? Seen people say he was. The October matches are Thursday and Sunday so less training time.
I also guarantee he's seen barely anything of Gomes. He's a really good player and a very valuable addition to this squad but he's not the calibre of player you build a team around if you're trying to win a World Cup. I think at the start of Carsley's tenure one or two might have been surprised he was starting but I don't think so by that point.
No, he was first choice throughout. Maybe a different midfield in the Germany game after we were already through to the knock-outs, but that's about it I think.
The biggest problem I've really seen over the two games has been these transitions where we're getting caught 3v3 at the back. Better opposition could really hurt us.
Gordon looks like he knows he's got the better of the right back every time he gets the ball. The right back looks like he knows it as well.
