I am not sure why Rice is the one at fault here though. We knew his abilities and issues from the Kosovo game. His partners were supposed to be the ones providing control. Henderson, Phillips and now Mainoo. He performed his defensive responsibilities well. If his partners had been more capable we would have seen more of his ability to drive up the pitch. Personally think Mainoo is overhyped. Would really like to see Wharton given more game time. oh and to answer your question Madness 1. a severe mental disorder that makes normal thinking and behaviour impossible.
Since so many of the weaker midfields have included Trent, from memory I think the last was Hungary with Phillips in his role.
I should have asked for Werner Erhart’s definition of insanity excuse me. We thought Rice had the talent to run a midfield, it was a mistake - we didn’t have anyone better in Southgate’s opinion - that’s why we’ve lost two finals. Stick Rodri or Zubimendi into our holding role and we’ve got a different team, as mentioned previously we can’t afford non technical midfield players playing deep in a team that wants to pass it.
Is Wharton really as good as Rodri or Zubimendi? That’s the only really viable option to Rice assuming Mainoo is starting

(HITC) Everton will offer 22-year-old English defender Jarrad Branthwaite a much-improved contract to compensate him for missing out on a big-money move to Manchester United. (Mirror) Everton are going to try to sign Manchester City and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, 28. (Football Insider) West Ham are weighing up a move for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori amid a failed bid to land former Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante. (Daily Mail) Thomas Frank has offered an update on the ongoing speculation surrounding Ivan Toney's future at Brentford, admitting it will cost a lot for the striker to be sold. (Daily Mail) Callum Wilson is a fitness doubt for the start of the season due to a back injury - which also risks affecting Newcastle United's summer transfer plans. (The Athletic) Everton have informed Manchester United they do not intend to sanction Jarrad Branthwaite's exit this summer, irrespective of their proposed takeover by the Friedkin Group (TFG) collapsing. We don’t know the answer. There’s definitely a shortage of players in that position and why we can’t manage to keep the ball vs big teams and fail to penetrate vs lesser teams. I’d like the FA to impose upon the 06s 07s & 08s a need for a midfield holder who passes it progressively rather than looking ridiculous pointing and waving arms after playing a square 5 yard pass.
Rice certainly doesn't need to be starting every game in the future but unless he gets injured he won't be leaving the squad. He's a far higher level of player than other midfielders who've remained in and around the team unwantedly in the past. Even if we ignore everyone in the system born after 2003 we still have some very promising deep, progressive midfielders on the horizon. In the under-21s alone there's Hayden Hackney and Tyler Morton, who can both reach senior international level if they keep progressing. I think Iroegbunam at Everton is worth keeping an eye on too. Not everybody agrees with me about his level, but I truly think that Ben Sheaf will have a Kalvin Phillips-esque rise to the England team if a Premier League club signs him this summer. A better player than Phillips ever was imo though, as much as I love Phillips.
It is hard for the FA to do that because it’s the club’s who ultimately create the players - why are clubs not producing English talent in certain postions.
Rice is on 58 caps already, I think he'll get 100, unless we suddenly get a few really really good midfielders coming through and/or starts becoming injury prone. People are very reactionary. Rice had been brilliant for England up to this tournament. I defend him a lot but he was off the pace at this competition.

He looked tired but there was also a lot of confusion on display in the first couple of games that reappeared at intervals throughout the knockout rounds. I just don't think the players started the tournament with a clear understanding of their roles, and the resulting poor performances seemed to shake their confidence further.
I remember before the Euros saying to my friends that if Rice got injured, England would be utterly finished, because he was our only high level (experienced) CM in the squad. I still feel that way in spite of him having an inconsistent tournament Moreover where England looked in real trouble. Mainoo and Wharton have suddenly emerged out of nowhere. However both of them are so young, still only 19 & 20. We have to be careful how we nurture the both of them in spite of England being so light in that area. I really hope we don't ruin either of them...

I quite hope this one gets done. Amad Diallo looks like he's ready to step up for United this season and they're fairly good for wingers as it is. Ideally I'd like to see Sancho in Spain or Italy but I think his game is better suited to football on the continent than it is in the Premier League.

Would the criticism have got to him that much though, that it would affect how slow he was with his movement and press? I dunno as would have thought it would motivate him to prove everyone wrong but instead he just looked sluggish, slow and totally off the pace throughout. I tend to think the injuries and fitness issues was the main cause but I guess we will never know unless it comes out at some point. I also think a stronger manager would have taken him out of the equation at some point early on but Southgate didn’t.
Yeah the take on Bellingham is so poor that it feels like the media need to target someone! English media can’t handle someone with personality and confidence that they have to try and bring him down! Unbelievable behaviour imo!
My bad, thought we were talking about Kane for some reason. Off course it was Rice No idea why I got Kane into my head……
Both apparently. Repeating the reports that some at Dortmund were not sad to see him leave and mentions of clashes with other members of the squad at the Euros.
