I understand Myles Lewis-Skelly has been left out of the #england squad to face Serbia because of a combination of tactical reasons and load management - his 90mins v Andorra was his first full game of the season. Big ask to go again 3 days later. (Rob Dorsett)
I always thought Tuchel would not play MLS against Serbia. He should have pushed MLS into midfield against Andorra and given Spence his debut off the bench at left back. MLS would have looked very competent in midfield against Andorra and very likely offered us what we were lacking. Surging dribbles from deep and link ups in the final third. You have to question why MLS is in the squad if he can only play left back against lesser teams. He’s seemingly not a midfield option and isn’t playing this season at club level.
Anthony Gordon in line to start vs Serbia in Belgrade. Newcastle team-mate Tino Livramento also pushing to play with Myles Lewis-Skelly missing out 🇷🇸🏴Serbia vs England live blog: Score and latest updates from World Cup qualifier https://t.co/Y1i0rcyQ9y— Mike McGrath (@mcgrathmike) September 9, 2025 https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/anthony-gordon-start-serbia-tuchel-153217226.html England forward Anthony Gordon is in line to start his first World Cup qualifier under Thomas Tuchel tonight. Tino Livramento has been pushing to start at full-back, while Ezri Konsa is expected to return to the back line after coming off the bench at Villa Park against Andorra. Morgan Rogers could also start
The buzz around starting Gordon at the Euros certainly seems a long time ago. He obviously gives you that three-lunged energy, but not entirely sure what he's done to be in the shake-up with no goals or assists since January - and the fact he's in the mix probably says more about the lack of in-form alternatives demanding inclusion. I've always thought I must be missing something with him, right from when he was first linked with huge money moves from Everton. He or Dan Burn wouldn't be within a million miles of a good England team and it's worrying it looks this messy 9 months out from a World Cup
Only just over 2 million watched on ITV Saturday. Qualifiers used to do quite well in the ratings but have dropped recently. Will likely be back to the usual figures in time for the World Cup.
He's very fortunate to be in the squad really let alone starting a game, though similar could be said for Rashford. Hasn't scored or assisted for Newcastle since January, and his England career has very much flattered to deceived in what has been a decent amount of game time. If he does start it should really be a make or break game for him. Hard to justify keep persisting with him otherwise. We don't necessarily have great non Rashford/Gordon alternatives but we do have them. Be that giving CHO a chance, reworking the side to fit grealish in, or trying Madueke who did well albeit against very limited opposition out there some more.
Morgan Rogers is set to start in England's World Cup qualifier against Serbia tonight 🦁Anthony Gordon is expected to get the nod in attack, while Tino Livramento and Ezri Konsa are also in line to play 🔁 pic.twitter.com/4Dag5Sm3rd— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) September 9, 2025 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c36ke39wyj7o Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers is set to start in England's 2026 World Cup qualifier against Serbia. Rogers and Anthony Gordon are expected to get the nod in attack, while Tino Livramento and Ezri Konsa are also in line to play. Dan Burn, Eberechi Eze and Marcus Rashford - who all started against Andorra - are expected to make way.
Rashford and Gordon are both players Tuchel has liked from before he took this job. That I suspect plays a big part for Tuchel. Grealish might come back but I’m not sure he is ever going to recall CHO. I know it gets denied but I do wonder if he leaving him out partly for attitude issues as they were tensions when he was at Chelsea.
I'm not that confident about tonight but it is nice to be finally playing a game with some jeopardy attached to it. Feels like forever since we played a game with something riding on it. I might be eating these words in two hours or so but this game will tell us a lot about the team going forward if nothing else.
Yeah, you’re not on your own to be fair as I’m also not that confident as it’s not an easy place to play anyway and anyone thinking we should walk this, need to have a re-think. First real game with jeopardy also might come into why I’m not feel so confident. I also have this bad feeling that our players might end up walking off the pitch but I hope I’m wrong.
I don’t like playing these number 10 role systems. If we have to do it I would want a high energy option like MGW. Happy enough with the rest of the team. It has to raise massive questions about squad selection policy. How was RLC going to play at any point? Whereas Curtis Jones is a very credible option in both games. He’s brought Anderson in and he has automatically taken a lot of Henderson’s pitch time from him. Same is probably going to happen with Burn and a few others. Feels like the squad is going to change a bit before the end of the year. Some options just aren’t proving their worth.
I think it's harsh to call any of them out of form this early in the season; they've only played three games. Madueke has also looked good in the minutes he's had for club and country. Gordon also looked good for Newcastle against Villa & Liverpool (before his red) imo despite not scoring. It's not like they've been putting in stinkers.
I'd like to see Livramento bomb on down the wing. Ghuei and konsa should deal with one front man. It's the attacking midfielders I'm worried about
I feel like Henderson is the one player who will keep being involved without Tuchel having any plan to really use him much on the pitch. Burn is at a higher risk of dropping out but his left footed ness might keep him as bench option due to limited other options.
Did any journalist/paper get it right? Until someone nails it for two games on the trot, their prediction should be treated with the same seriousness that a Sunday Sport headline merits.
I ageee wirh Madeuke. Rogers has been getting a lot of Villa fans criticising him for his recent performances - more than Gordon has with Newcastle fans.
