He had just played a full game on a plastic pitch. Seemed odd to me to start him from the start again in this game after the season he has had.
Real Madrid are looking to agree a deal with Liverpool worth about £1m for 26-year-old England full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to join them before the Club World Cup. Kyle Walker will 100% leave the club, even if AC Milan won’t buy him. (Fabrizio Romano) Eric Dier on the possibility of a return to the national team under Thomas Tuchel: "I hope so. I think I’m playing my best football" Real Madrid have not yet made Liverpool a formal offer to sign England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold early, a week after asking the Premier League club if the 26-year-old could play for them in next month's Club World Cup. (Sky Sports) Liverpool could look to replace Alexander-Arnold with Bayer Leverkusen and Netherlands right-back Jeremie Frimpong, 24, who has a £29.4m-33.6m (35-40m euros) release clause. (Sky Germany - in German), external Livramento to Man City would be a big move - will it work through. If Dier returns then who misses out. Quansah would be by the far the most logical but it could be Konsa or even Guehi. Looks like Liverpool are going to use Frimpong and others to fill their homegrown quota without needing many English players. Jones is the only one they have not leaving or linked to be leaving.
I can’t see Dier taking the places of Konsa or Guehi to be honest and I highly doubt he will be recalled anyway unless we have injuries.

It's a good observation about Frimpong qualifying as homegrown. We're all kind of bracing ourselves, as England supporters, for Slot to do what all Dutch managers do and start buying Dutch. But it'll sting all the more, if those same players also take up places that should rightly be earmarked for the ongoing development of English lads. Not at the big clubs.
The rules need changing but the FA doesn’t want to rock the boat and take on the PL. I suspect any chances will have to wait till a big senior team failure. Of course considering Frimpong’s lack of Dutch fluency they will not be able to speak Dutch between each other unlike other Dutch players and their Dutch managers.
So you think a player who comes through a PL or Football League academy shouldn't count as homegrown if they aren't English?
Not related to Frimpong, as he's clearly a UK developed player having moved here at 7 and joined Man City aged 9, but I do think there's something that could be done to tweak the rules a bit, as you can get players who haven't been involved in the academy system who can qualify. Currently the rules are play for three years between the ages of 15 and 21. You could sign on your 18th birthday as a first team player, and become "homegrown".
Saliba is an example of this. But we know any attempt to change things will see the entire PL do eveything they can to block it and the FA never seem keen on taking them on like this.
I don’t have much of an issue tweaking that rule to lower the age to 20, to prevent that issue. But it sounded like @Fireburn47 wants to change the rules to stop players like Frimpong counting as homegrown?
I would not mind if it was like Rugby’s rule that is only England eligible players count and those who switch away lose their eligibility,
Well that ain't happening in football, for many reasons, most notably because pretty much no one wants it to. But being England-qualified in rugby is more nebulous (you don't even need a passport) than pretty much any other sport, isn't it?
Does anyone know the reason behind the why the homegrown rule was introduced? Was it to try and protect the England National team? I always thought that was the intention but I could be wrong.
It was a UEFA thing at first, about 20 years ago. Squads had a maximum of 25 players, with 8 "homegrown" of which 4 had to be trained at the club.
Yeah just had a look and it’s nothing really to do with Nationality rather just to bring more domestic players through who like you said trained by the Club.
