THIS is why we need more coaches like Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche in top PL posts. English managers, who are prepared to invest in English talent, to create dynamic, relatable teams that have a solid English core.

With Guehi, Hall, Livramento and Pope all wearing the black and white stripes, England's backline could have a distinctively Geordie flavour to it for years to come.

I do wonder how long Howe will last - think they need to be properly challenging for the CL again this season for him to be secure.

Newcastle are pretty constrained by financial fair play, they overachieved massively to make the champions league the season before last really. Difficult to see them really significantly improving beyond current performances given their current squad.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily translate to patience from owners, but their backround appointments have been sensible, and the landscape just isn't the same as it was when Man City were able to become a superpower.

If they can stay healthy they should be top 6 but I’m expecting the same top 4 this season or near enough

I don't think the bar to finish 4th is going to be much higher than it has been in the last two seasons. Liverpool are a bit of a mystery to me but I think Man Utd, Villa, Spurs and Newcastle all have fairly comparable levels of quality. I could see any of those sides coming 4th this season.

For Newcastle it really depends if they can avoid another injury crisis.

I could see Chelsea in that pack as well.

Newcastle United are close to agreeing a deal worth more than £60m to sign England centre-back Marc Guehi, 24, from Crystal Palace. (Telegraph - subscription required), external

Tottenham have held talks about signing Bournemouth's English striker Dominic Solanke and are keen to make progress in a move for the 26-year-old, whose release clause is thought to be worth about £65m. (Telegraph), external

West Ham's hopes of signing English defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been dealt a blow with the 26-year-old reported to be pushing for a multi-million pound pay-off from Manchester United to leave the club this summer. (Sun), external

United are in a real state of flux

their best player is getting old and the rest are kids and inconsistent

might of been the right time to rebuild

Winning the FA Cup is potentially the worst thing United could have done. It's given a cocksure Ten Hag the green light to stock up on even more ex-Ajax/Dutch players. And worse still from an England perspective, it seems to have deflected Ratcliffe and Ineos away from their initial intention of having a core of British talent. I really wouldn't bet on them finishing in the top 4.

With Wan Bissaka, Sancho and McTomineh all likely to head out of the door their British numbers will surely go down.

If you fancy taking on the English players playing percentage thread this year then feel free. Not sure I have the time or bothered with the effort when games get cancelled etc I lose track.

Looks like Gallagher to Atletico Madrid might collapse due to Alvarez having issues over personal terms. Means there is then the risk of Gallagher ending up in the U21’s if he doesn’t get a move.

Genuine question but why does the Alvarez deal impact Gallagher joining?

It was to do with agreeing that Sami Omordion would move from Atletico to Chelsea.

Tottenham are interested in Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke, but a move for Englishman could be dependent on the future of 27-year-old Brazilian striker Richarlison. (Standard), external

West Ham are willing to listen to offers for 32-year-old English forward Danny Ings. (Football Insider)

England goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone are at the centre of a transfer fight between a number of Premier League clubs. (The Sun)

Hopefully it’s a really quick fight with a massive payout for ramsdale

cheeky 30 mill bid should be enough

Wolves seem the front runner at the moment with Nottingham Forest and Southampton also linked.
