I wouldn't say Scholes never produced. He had some Amazing moments In an England shirt. Far more than foden
Ramsdale's play with his feet is right on that line between exquisite and accident waiting to happen. You could see Dibling at City one day, doing the Grealish job from the left.
I think a lot of that speaks to the problem with the environment players play in at City compared to what's demanded in international football. In a strict positional play like City's, rotations and patterns of play are so heavily rehearsed that Foden knows where his teammates are going to be in a lot of situations, so certain decisions in certain scenarios are almost made for him. When he's outside of that environment he finds it more difficult to be intuitive, which is normal, and it's certainly not something that's exclusive to Foden. I don't think his decision-making is bad in general fwiw, he's obviously a very good player, it's just short of what we should expect from a world-class player.
I don't agree with this idea that Foden is lacking in confidence for England. He is always demanding the ball. He keeps trying flicks and dribbles into traffic. The problem seems to be he is playing a different game to everyone else.
I think Foden has all the technical qualities to be a #10 but I'm not convinced he has the game between his ears to do it, especially when it's an unfamiliar system and he has to rely on that natural understanding of the game to get by.
I don’t think playing Bellingham on this right hand side suits him at all. Not seen much of Madrid this season but if he’s being played out of position, little wonder he seems to be struggling.
I think Mbappe just highlights how incredibly special and unique Messi and Ronaldo were. He’s in his mid 20s, yet is already being upstaged and potentially usurped by another, younger player in Yamal. And certainly by Vinicius in his own team. He had the world at his feet only two years ago and probably thought football would be a domain run by him for the next decade. Some people still don’t appreciate how rare it was for two players to be uncontested for the best player in the world for over a decade with no challengers ever threatening them.
A unsual era.. Coincidentally tied with a similar level of dominance in Tennis. I wonder wonder if the UK is one of the few countries where Ronaldo is maybe more popular than Messi. In my real life all I used to hear is Messi is overated and how he never performed for Argentina
I feel like Mbappé is a good example of the potential damages of the Messi/Ronaldo legacy. Everything about the sport has become increasingly more individualistic since their era and Mbappé, possibly to his own detriment, embodies that. Age 17-19 he had the world at his feet, but he's become progressively more entitled and progressively more individualistic in pursuit of a Balloon d'Or and individual honours, and he's arguably becoming less of an asset to the teams he plays for as a result. He's a great player but he'd be so much more valuable to his team if he became a little bit more team oriented, both with and without the ball.
Watching Motd and Philips starting to get up to speed and delap looks like he could be Kanes Heir apparent .By the way Ipswich's goalkeeper is shite
Also after watching that El classico, it wouldn’t surprise me if Spain are going to dominate World football for years to come. The talent they have seems relentless. I fear we missed our chance to win something under Southgate. Hope I’m wrong though…
Not sure on that. La Liga looks to be in serious decline, in the coefficients they’ve gone from 2nd to 3rd to 4th in consecutive years. So far this season they’re 5th among the big nations. In the 5 year coefficients they’re now behind Serie A in 3rd. Real and Barca are still a threat but the other Spanish teams regularly get beaten now. When you’re watching La Liga it’s no longer a top two league. A stark contrast to their international golden era. They’ve got some fantastic players of course but remember they had two naturalised Frenchmen in their Euros winning team. They will dominate in the women’s game but the men’s game is very different proposition and dominating it in the modern era is very difficult.
Almost all of his legacy was built in an amazing national team and a weak domestic league. I think he was just never quite at the level people believed him to be.
You’re right about their league but they seem to have a ton of talented kids coming through or already playing first team football, I mean Barca seem a pretty good example plus if their league is in decline, it probably provides more opportunities for their young players unlike our league where our numbers are still likely to decline due to the power and finances of the league.
Can someone with clout please turn the clocks back to half-tine in England's 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, or the Euro 2020 Italy final, and somehow coerce Gareth Southgate into making the vital early substitutions that stop our opponents seizing control.
You're justified in your fear. I think it's quite clear they've nowhere near peaked (on paper) yet, unless they suffer a load of injuries they're going to get much stronger. They weren't even full strength when they won the Euros with Pedri effectively missing the QF, SF & Final. Then Gavi missed the tournament too. However, I'm pretty confident that we haven't peaked on paper yet either. I think the quality in our youth teams right now is immense so there's a really good chance we're going to get stronger too, especially when you consider how many clear gaps we've got to fill (GK, LB, DM). Even if we don't, Spain aren't going to just sweep 4 or 5 of the next 6 tournaments, it never works that way. It's knockout football, all it takes is a dodgy officiating decision or a penalty shootout and they're gone. The best team on paper wins the tournament in WC and Euros history about 40-50% of the time. I bet after the 2018 World Cup with all the hype around France, few people would have predicted that they'd go on to fail to win any of the next three tournaments and wouldn't make either of the next two Euros finals.
West Ham could make a move for 27-year-old English left-back Ben Chilwell from Chelsea in January. (Inside Track podcast, via Team talk) Crystal Palace are reluctant to re-open talks with Newcastle United about England defender Marc Guehi, 24, in the January window. (Football Insider) Gareth Southgate has been cleared over a controversial tax scheme - paving the way for a knighthood in the New Year Honours List. (The Sun) Fans have called for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck to be called into England's next squad after he continued his stunning form against Wolves. (Mail on Sunday) Trent Alexander-Arnold has said he wants to be remembered as the "greatest right-back to have played football" as he set his sights on winning the Ballon d'Or. (The Observer)
The U17 World Cup was quite some time ago now though. I don’t doubt the talent we have coming through, we clearly have some top talent but I think in somewhere like Spain, there’s a much clearer pathway for their development, whilst quite a few of ours end up stalling at the top end of the league due to a lack of opportunities. Obviously some do get through but not as many as they should.
