who is miles ahead of palmer (palmer scores a few goals and is labelled world class but look at his defensive output and chance creation)

Saka has the highest chance creation in all of Europe so far, is constantly doubled by defenders and still scores

‘Curtis Jones and Bukayo Saka will not travel to Finland. Saka has returned to Arsenal for further assessment having been substituted during the second-half of Thursday night’s match against Greece.

Liverpool’s Jones remains in England owing to a personal commitment.

A squad of 22 will now fly to Helsinki on Saturday afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s UEFA Nations League fixture.’



So Jones and Saka both leave the camp. Jones due to a personal commitment (His partner is heavily pregnant so probably related to that) and Saka due to injury.

Guehi clearly starting tommrow then by doing the press conference. I am surprised it’s not Kane after Thursday as the questions might be tougher than normal.

There's a slight concern now that Carsley loses his bottle a bit and over-corrects himself with the changes, and by doing so abandons his core principles. I don't see how playing all of Walker, Rice and Gallagher will lead to the kind of performance he needs the team to give if he's going to get back on track.

He needs to remain confident in his methods and make sure the team plays the game the way he wants them to play.

well exactly that's my point its not meant as a pejorative he has specific qualities that he excels at more than almost anyone in world football mainly his strength power finishing and relative technique for his size.

but those qualities are the cherry on top when you play for a team like Real Madrid where there are players dictating the tempo building out the back and giving you space to make the most of your qualities.

he's not a true 10 but he's also not a 6 he's an 8 but he needs to play in a midfield 3.
Palmer Foden and Jude are all attacking midfielders and when you have Kane in there at the 9 he's another that wants to sit in that same space. it simply does not properly function as a cohesive unit and the talent the players have as individuals while high is a bit of an illusion the idea that Southgate was holding all these ballers back from being this star studded 1-11 was debunked and if one is an England fan it's something one should hope is never tried again.

I use the example of the 4222 Brazil because at times brazil would line up with this formation playing 3 or 4 10s notably in 1982 with

This is essentially what England tried to do and it's something few teams should ever try really but if you do then you need the technical ability of these brazil squads and even then it only takes you so far often. This England generation is good but they are not THAT good. When Italy had Totti Del Piero Zola Baggio in 98-2000 you know how many played at once? 1. You only need 1 number 10 anything else and it's like fielding 4 Ozils.

 

Thursday night does not debunk the idea that Southgate was holding many of England's attackers back. There's a middle point between what Southgate mostly did for the past few years and what Carsley did on Thursday night. Carsley was at the very end of one extreme while Southgate was much closer to the other.

 

fair enough .. I think no one can deny the individual brilliance many of these players bring to their clubs. why are they not able to do it together? well its obviously because the players they all individually play with at club level do a lot of work to set them self up for success. Palmer is an exception here but the rest are in very comfortable spots at club level.

two things can be correct at once they can be brilliant players world stars even and and as a group lack qualities that the players they play with at club level bring which is why the clubs pay a lot of money for these deep squads. its not like this England team represents a block of players that have success at club level the way the Man Utd block did from 96-2004 etc. there is no top level team in world football that is dominated by 5 or 6 or 7 English players in their starting 11.

there is a reason why Southgate said they never replaced Phillips and Henderson and it's not because he's an idiot. fans tend to overate certain positions and undervalue others. that deep midfielder that builds out the back is key in modern football. I get why they would try Palmer there but that's a charity game strategy unless he was truly converted into the role like a Hakan Chananoglu has been at Inter.

 

I agree there is a middle ground. that's what they need to aim for this was a gross overcorrection and overestimation of the technical superiority that particular 11 would be able to impose against a group of well drilled professionals.

I am speaking about specific fans that believe in a fantasy 11 or the biggest names all playing at once was the answer. that was debunked. I wonder if the players bought into that hype themselves. Southgate for sure held back the group but he was also privy to the fact that while he had a lot of players with qualities that could bail the team out wth wonder strikes etc he did not have the type of players that could play a champagne football alla Spain just based on their player profiles. he remedied this by being overtly negative and hoped those wonder strikes would come and they did until they did not. The solution is not as easy as many thought because Southgate was not as out off touch as many thought he was practical because he felt he needed to be. Can another manager solve the puzzle? Surely yes a better way is possible.

Lee Carsley has confirmed he will opt for a more ‘conventional’ system after England’s 2-1 defeat by Greece

Lee Carsley will make sweeping changes to his England team and is looking at playing Trent Alexander-Arnold in an unfamiliar left-back role.

The England interim manager has confirmed he will abandon his all-out-attack system that saw his team lose to Greece in midweek, with Phil Foden and Anthony Gordon those at risk of losing their places.

Harry Kane will come back into the team after being injured for the Wembley loss, which will change the formation of the team. “I think we’ll be a bit more conventional,” confirmed Carsley.

Carsley has been training with Alexander-Arnold at left-back despite him not playing there for Liverpool this season, while Kyle Walker is poised to start for his first minutes under the interim manager.

Marc Guehi is also set to come in, with up to five changes made to the team as they look to bounce back from defeat.

“The scrutiny, I don’t pay too much attention to,” said Guehi. “I know we have standards for ourselves in the camp and we try to set them ourselves. It’s important we move on and try to get a reaction.

“It’s important that we put things into perspective. There’s loads players in the team and players that have dealt with difficult moments. I think everyone will rally together and make sure we can get a reaction.”

Angel Gomes could come into the team alongside Declan Rice in central midfield, while Jack Grealish may play as a No10.

Carsley spoke about Foden and the need to keep patience with the Manchester City forward after he struggled to make an impact against Greece.

“We have to just keep persevering with Phil,” Carsley said. “He’s an outstanding talent, he’s definitely a player that is going to have a massive future with England. I think the less pressure we can put on him the better. He needs to be able to keep playing in his own time.”

Trent at ieft back honestly to me sounds almost as risky as playing with no Striker like on Thursday. Something that could work on paper but could go badly wrong.

Grealish as the N.10 apparently as well.

I've wanted to see Trent at left-back for a while, I can see the logic in trying him there. The bigger risk comes with putting Walker on the other side because he's basically a walking accident, but even then none of that should matter that much against Finland.

 

It still feels like it would be better to have a proper left back there.
