A loss is one thing but realistically Greece could have scored 5 or 6. There were obvious structural issues from the beginning with what was a odd line up. I was supportive of Carsley before this but it's impossible to survive that really. His biggest sin really was falling into the age old trap of cramming everyone in. Quite how he didn't correct anything tonight when Greece were time and time again playing through our midfield is beyond me. It's impossible to imagine how the fa can sell his appointment now. Does make the fa's recruitment look very amateur. Not to let the players off who were very arrogant all game trying Hollywood balls and fancy flicks like they were 5-0 up rather than being outplayed. Too many players wanting to be the star man, no one wanting to do the boring off the ball tracking or the boring build up play.
One of the only positives was Madueke who basically maintained width and stretched play. Pretty basic stuff but that wasn’t offered by anyone else.
I wouldn't be surprised.........even if he'd won EVERY game in this 2nd rate group he would have gained nothing, the fact that England aren't even going to finish atop a 2nd rate group surely means he has NO CHANCE of the job?
Who cares what the press say? They're professional liars. Guardiola has nothing to do with that case. Even if you assume that the FA are cowards who would make decisions for the sake of optics (and they are), they'd get far more flack for not hiring him over something so irrelevant if anything.
Are you just trolling at this point, or were you kicked in the head by a horse during childhood or something?
The issue is how they can sell some of the others as well. Potter for example after Chelsea really needed a club job to rebuild his reputation before getting the England job.
In a way it was a bottle job by Carsley by trying to shoehorn all the big names in. It makes him look like an unheralded manager that’s afraid to put some big names on the bench. Giving Trent a free attacking role whilst playing a defensively weak right back on his unnatural side was a recipe for disaster. It looks like his dream of getting the job just went up in smoke. Big questions too if we can really play such an attacking formation with a high line full stop. The goalkeeper is a massive issue for those ambitions but also the 6 position.
I still don't understand the line up. Should have been changed at HT. We really haven't learnt that it's not about the best 11 players. Still.
It was a terrible game, but all the hyperbolic nonsense on this forum was even worse. It was one thing for Carsley to experiment, but the real mistake was not correcting at the break when he could have, the goal came straight after and from then on they were just chasing the result. Anyway, I'm waiting for nothing more than for Guardiola to announce that he has no intention of taking the England job, because this ridiculous messiah waiting is more annoying than anything.
I don't think there's any way to look at it as a bottle job. It was a more extreme doubling down of the issues from the euros of trying to fit in the big names over any coherency. It wouldn't have been so bad as an experimental thing for the first half, but when it became immediately clear it wasn't going to work we had to be changing it. Doubling down on it just looked weak at best, clueless at worse.
- The physical flooring of the team needs to raise massively. Guehi probably needs to be there, and I think Tyrick Mitchell would also be very useful when playing Trent. Branthwaite too in that role. - I wouldn't be bothered if we didn't see Foden or Rico in the next few squads. - I also think we need to look into another proper left winger. If Gordon is the only option there it's an issue. Rashford needs to be considered imo. - Henderson probably deserves a chance over Pickford at this point. - The midfield obviously needs a first receiver, likely Gomes. Only one of Saka or Palmer starting on the right. - Play a bloody striker.
Yep, in terms of bad job interviews, that was the equivalent of arriving an hour late, getting the interviewer's name wrong, asking how many sick days you're entitled to, then vomiting into the nearest waste paper basket. Not a good night for Lee Carsley.
I don’t know why it wasn’t just Colwill at LB and Stones with another CB. Much more solid of a base to work with. We were basically playing three risky experiments all at once. The full backs, Palmer and Foden in deeper roles and a false 9 role.
Yeah, anything that gives the balance you need. It was just all out of whack today. Would need another body alongside Rice though if you go down that route.
I thought Lewis was impressive in possession. He's a very Philip lahm type of player probably needs to gain some muscle
