That's a benefit of being in the later groups. Counterbalanced by less rest time before the KO stage.
That was because they didn't align the last group matches back in 1982, so West Germany vs Austria was played a day after Algeria's last match and they both knew what it took to qualify both teams. I'm thinking more of a scenario where 3 points may or may not guarantee a third place qualification. The last group has Team A, who have beaten Teams B and C heavily, and Team D, who have lost to both B and C. B & C play each other and know that if they lose then they're out regardless of the other group match, but if they draw then they both qualify as 4 points will eliminate a third place team from another group. From an integrity standpoint, this just doesn't feel like it's a situation that should be possible.
I’m just here to read the replies and players’ facial reaction. Last night, we received a message of support from POTUS ahead of our World Cup journey. pic.twitter.com/MVPITGldtS— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) June 12, 2026
Weirdest moment of the day was the American tennis player Iva Jovic mentioning Harry Kane at Queens today because her coach is English (Or British as she called him)
Neymar will either be brilliant when he finally plays or abject and a total waste of a spot. 🚨🇧🇷 BREAKING: Neymar Jr to miss Brazil vs Morocco opening game but back next week.“Neymar is working very hard to recover as quickly as possible. The expectation is that he will recover and rejoin the group next week”. pic.twitter.com/8aFLuHyo11— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 12, 2026
Surprised by how few goals there are in Paraguay’s squad. Almiron with ten goals is their most productive player. Only one other player that has scored more than six goals in the squad.
🚨BREAKING: Someone just put $1.8M on the United States to NOT win their match vs Paraguay tonight The payout is $3,507,148.00 on polymarket pic.twitter.com/vUXc0N3Cqp— Polymarket Sports (@PolymarketSport) June 12, 2026
The Americans looking decent in the first 10. If Paraguay aren't careful this could get out of hand In a bar watching with my American born kid. ( Due to administrative detail I am too. Still can't bring myself to celebrate when they score (
Pulisic is a good player Allegri ball just ruined him this year.... probably means Leao isnt as bad as he looked as well.
They're really good at playing to their strengths are the US. Said it after the Germany friendly but they know exactly what they're good at and they lean into it. So aggressive and commit so many players forward. They'll probably give up chances at the other end but this style will win them more games than it'll lose them.
The US are playing at quite a fast tempo. I thought this was not going to be realistic due to the heat. But so far, none of the games have looked like they did in last yrs Club WC where you could clearly see how hot it was. The pitches are also looking good so far. Certainly a lot better than they did in the Club World Cup Edit: just seen the stadium roof is shut
This Paraguay low block is absolutely terrible. They're so static and can't handle movement at all. They're giving the US defenders bags of time in buildup and they're absolutely feasting.
It'll be interesting to see if the US can keep this pace up throughout the tournament. They play at 100mph.
4 - The #USMNT has benefited from four own goals in the FIFA World Cup, only France (6) has benefited from more. Bonus. pic.twitter.com/EwAyULwkAE— OptaJack⚽️ (@OptaJack) June 13, 2026
These unathletic Paraguayan twinks can't handle this tempo. Shows what you can do when people actually make runs and move the ball quickly. Will be interesting to see if and how the game shifts when the US can no longer maintain this intensity though, assuming that happens.
