The world was too divided over it. Spain was sympathetic to Argentina during the conflict.

The 1982 falklands war is the root cause. It's not a justification but it is the root cause.

Does this make sense?

 

The 1978 World cup has the nastiest history of all world cups. And as always Argentina did everything they could to win. There were bribes, there were match fixing. They needed a 6-0 win against Peru. No problem. Johan Cruyff was threatend that if he went to the World cup, he and his family would be killed. He did not go. He was one of the best players in the world at the time. The Netherlands still made it to the final without him.

 

No, it is not the root cause. The invasion did not happen arbitrarily out of nowhere, the reasons they chose to do the invasion are the root cause. To say the war is the root cause as justification for Argentinian actions in 2026 is to blame the UK for defending our land and our people from a foreign invader.

Yeah, maybe because of Gibraltar? When it comes to these conflicts. The most important parties are often forgotten. The people who actually live there. And the Falklanders want nothing to do with Argentina. And Gibraltar does not want to be a part of Spain.

 

One last thought on the Falklands issue

There are still elements of the UK population who talk about WW2 as if it happened in recent memory. See the 10 German bombers song that still gets an airing etc etc. .

I'm not surprised that the Argentinian government and population harks back to the Falklands, especially in times of economic crisis.

No, the people of Argentina didn't even want the islands to begin with. In fact, most of the country didn't know the islands even existed in 1982. It was their military dictatorship (at the time) who chose to invade out of nowhere, so to divert attention away from the failing economy at home.

So the root cause is because they started a war, then lost it and were humiliated in front of the whole world in the process. And they've been butthurt about it ever since..

And that is the root cause of their hatred of England. Nothing more, nothing less.

Overall that was an average to poor World Cup. Not a lot of quality and no complete teams.

I would say it will go down as a middle-lower ranking world cup overall, the RO32 and RO16 games were particularly good fun.

The group stage however was pretty interminable and there was zero jeopardy for any good sides (every pot side through and 8/9 non co hosts winning the group). 3rd place teams going through kills all group stages but it was particularly bad here given the size of the tournament. 70 per cent of games to get rid of 2/24 pot 1 and 2 teams was farcical.

FIFA also encroaching on the laws and rules of the games to make more favourable commercial and political decisions also a very unwelcome outcome of the world cup that are unfortunately difficult to see being reversed, and indeed probably accelerating.

For all the early talk of being a world cup of upsets it also turned out to be one of the most conventional world cups I can remember. Germany Paraguay stands out as the only major upset. I guess Norway Brazil on reputation but not really team quality.

They've won three trophies on the bounce and reached a final under after being a complete mess for years prior, and now they all seemingly want him sacked for losing said final.
