I understand the “eye for an eye” thinking when playing against countries who routinely employ the dark arts, but I wonder if it will backfire on England? Referees know Argentina engages in shithousery, so tend to give them leeway since it’s part of their football culture, and “they’ve always done it”. But for nations who have not historically done so, I think they would get carded since refs don’t expect it from England, or Japan, or Canada, etc. Thus, the countries who haven’t historically resorted to the dark arts might get overly punished because it’s not expected from them.

I don't think we should be doing it back to Argentina and the like, because certainly that only ends in a red card for England (see Beckham in '98).

But when we are on the end of actual fouls and violent play our players need to sell it, even if its dramatics. Anderson might have played honestly, but Argentina entirely rely on the fact he doesn't make a meal of it for what was at the end of the day, violent conduct, and should have been a red card. See Simeone getting Beckham that red card by selling the violent conduct in a way Anderson didn't do.

He shouldn't have to do it, but that is the reality of the situation against these sides. We should be teaching that and drilling it into the players heads, and making sure its done at youth tournaments too as they face the same tactics there. It should be second nature by senior level.

 

How long was that half time show? Like 25 minutes? Feeling like that, and the hydrations breaks, significantly change the nature of the sport.

I will never understand though why if everyone knows Argentina play this way, why the referees should ref them differently than anyone else, honestly just doesn’t make any sense since everyone should be on a equal footing otherwise what’s the point. Take the other night for example when we played them, they were constantly fouling throughout that first half and got away it all the time and then Anderson makes a foul and it’s a yellow. It’s why we call it two tier referring.
