I knew something about that facial expression combined with debasing oneself in a picture with Mango looked familiar and I figured out where I had seen it before. Mitt's Reek moment!

Nazi ideology was also famously obsessed with physical health but ironically - and unlike many of RFK Jr.'s insane beliefs - some of it was actually based on actual science.
Like some of the world's earliest large scale anti-smoking campaigns.

Still, it is interesting that all of this stuff is largely just one song, regardless of the era or the broader context.

Yes. Had a pretty significant impact on his circulation.

I was into it before it became NPR cool, though.

    And the horrific experiments.

Was more commenting on how a health/body cultus was another common characteristic of white supremacist fascist movements.

I took a look at Elrond's feed and it's just a stream of lies about inflation and claims that 75% of government employees work from home.

As usual the mainstream media will fail to cover how insane this is that a man posting verifiable lies to his 200m followers should be overseeing Federal job cuts

People wonder if the US will become like Russia - but is it not partially there already?

There is a massive industry in Russia (and after they saw how successful it was, Iran and China) helping that along and Musk has taken active measures to help them (like shutting down people's attempt to hide their posts from their feed, or restricting access to information so third parties can't research them).

That's what upsets me about America's lukewarm support of Ukraine. There is a war between a country that wants to be more like us and a country that wants us to be more like them, and I can't believe it isn't clear to everyone which side is better.

it willl be at 20M before the end of the day. It is fascinating to watch this site grow before our eyes. Apparently every other conversation on Twitter is about users migrating to BlueSky. They have the capability to do what Tthrwad totally missed, I.e, to create a viable and superior alternative to the hell site.

I think we've been discussing the colonization of Mars in this thread. I am a HUGE skeptic. Here's a fun article from a UK couple that were pumped about the idea, researched it, and now think it is stupid.
    https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/21/science/mars-human-settlement-elon-musk/index.html

I'd pluck out a quote or two, but the abbreviated interview is already abbreviated.

Ultimately, launching things and people into space, people for a short time, is lightyears different from a settlement.

I think various studies have estimated than the maximum human lifespan on Mars is between 2.5 and 4 years.

While I found the stuff about reproducing to be most interesting (like, given bone loss that will come from being outside the amount of gravity we're used to, good luck not having hips breaking when women are giving birth) there's this thing. Some of which I'd alreadly considered, some I hadn't:

(coauthor Z(ach) W(einersmith): The fundamental thing is to understand that humans evolved on Earth, and Mars just lacks a lot of the stuff that we have on Earth. It’s about 40% gravity and we know that humans in microgravity have all sorts of major problems, and what happens at 40% we just don’t know.

The soil is laden in perchlorate, which is known to cause hormone disruption. We actually don’t have a lot of data on prolonged exposure to high levels of this stuff, because why would we? But presumably it’s not great for developing humans.

You have an extremely thin atmosphere. Essentially that means you cannot go outside without a pressure suit. The atmosphere is nevertheless powerful enough to whip up worldwide dust storms and also large, localized ones. There is also this stuff called regolith, which has jagged stone and glass, all that is hurling around, which is bad for equipment, bad for humans. Also, if you’re intending to use solar power, you better have a really good backup system, and you’re going to have to spend a huge amount of time maintaining it.

Okay, but besides the fact that the atmosphere is basically impossible for us to survive it. . . it still sounds like a great idea! So ******** that whole "humans evolved on Earth" bullshit.

I had forgotten the perchlorate thing. I just knew the surface had high levels of toxins.

This shit makes me so angry.....This MFer just spent a cool $200M to buy an election and grow his fortune....Obscene.

“Elon Musk’s net worth hit an all-time high of $347.8 billion on Friday, driven by Tesla Inc.’s ongoing stock rally and a new funding round valuing his artificial intelligence startup xAI at $50 billion,” Bloomberg reports.
“Musk’s numerous businesses have been surging in value since Donald Trump’s election victory propelled Musk, the so-called ‘first buddy,’ into the political spotlight.”

Masnick points out how the media got played yet again on questions of content moderation on social media. And now that X is openly collaborating with the government suddenly the substack bros don’t care. Taibbi and Weiss supporting Trump is chefs kiss.

    From MSN

The collusion between government and Big Tech is no longer a conspiracy theory — it’s out in the open.

Yet suddenly, all those grave concerns about the threat to democracy have evaporated. Most of the same voices who warned of shocking government overreach in the pre-Musk Twitter era are either silent about this turn of events or they’re in wild celebration of the Trump-Musk alliance. This reveals the issue wasn’t a matter of principle; it was a matter of party.

The blatant hypocrisy is staggering, and it raises serious questions about the sincerity and consistency of the conservative crusade against social media.

It's reasonably common knowledge that many of Elrond's 200m followers are bots

Use of the site is way down yet his following has reached insane levels.

He has to keep the bots (and maybe even operate them) because advertisers pay by the number of accounts that see their ad. So it's bigger than just his follower count (not that that isn't a good enough reason for Musk).
