Appears it was suicide. Just like Baby Britain, he fought problems with bigger problems. Very, very sad. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/03-10/22.shtml
sigh I guess given his fight with addiction, this was going to happen sooner or later. Still, very sad.
Wow. Still no official word from DreamWorks but it's also on NME. Sometimes you can beat your demons, and sometimes the demons win. RIP.
Oh yes, let's all feel sad for the junkie. He was a PDX indie rock caricature. This has got to be around 5th person from that scene that I know has od'd/suicided. They know what they are getting into. It is sad for people who enjoyed his music, but don;t feel bad for him.
More info from the MTV site confirming the rumors of suicide. "A single knife wound that appeared to be self-inflicted was evident on the body, though police detectives are investigating the incident for foul play and/or other possibilities." http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1479869/20031022/smith_elliott.jhtml?headlines=true
No, but apparently you are. Show some respect and maturity. This isn't the time or the place for that kind of sermon.
He doesn't really have any popular songs in the true sense of the word. He had a song nominated for a grammy, but it was from the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, so the name of the movie sort of overshadowed him as the songwriter. He's more of a cult figure who will only get bigger as time goes on. Most of his fans are the really hipster, trendy 20-something folks you might spot on the bus on any given day.
You might be most familiar with Miss Misery or Angeles (the first from Good Will Hunting, the second from Either/Or.) Needle In The Hay (off his self titled CD) is featured in the Royal Tenenbaums when, sadly enough, Richie (Luke Wilson) attempts suicide. Some great songs to check out: From Figure 8: Everything Reminds Me Of Her Son Of Sam From X/O: Sweet Adeline Waltz #2 From Either/Or: Alameda Between The Bars From Elliott Smith: Coming Up Roses St. Ides Heaven I haven't picked up Roman Candle, so somebody else can chime in
no doubt. hell i remember me and my friends kinda joking about how an Elliott Smith song was used during the suicide scene from Royal Tenebaums when we first saw the movie. sad sad day
