To be honest, the rumors and the available links were flimsy at best. The most concise was the Algerian outlet, Le Buteur, who was citing an unnamed English source one day. The same outlet the next day published an article stating no agreement was in place, only negotiations with some top clubs. According to Squawka though, there was no Arsenal bid for Mahrez. Having said that, I truly hope Ivan & Arsene have some clear plans for this Summer. It is obvious we are short of at least 2 more players (a CB and a striker) and not making any move by Sept 1 will be criminal negligence. I cant imagine how toxic the atmosphere around the club will be if nothing happens and we get off a bad start. "The Gunners have been heavily linked with a £40m-plus move for Mahrez as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his squad ahead of the new season. But sources have told Squawka that Arsenal have not made contact with Leicester regarding the 25-year-old and as it stands do not intend to make a bid for him this summer." Gents, I don't want to raise your hopes too high, but one never knows. Actually, Dean may be one of the most reliable Arsenal "ITK"s. Arsenal/Flyers4Ever @arsenalmad79 @AFCAMDEN where is the madness mate? Signing no one anymore? You cant make it up. Thx god its his last year. Follow Pablo @AFCAMDEN @arsenalmad79 we've been talking to one of the best forwards in Europe. Trying to convince him to come. Also been scouting a young Spaniard 6:27 AM - 30 Jul 2016 1919 Retweets 99 likes
Here we go.....Mahrez is coming... Just met Wenger at Venice Beach and I asked him about Mahrez and this was his response 🙏🙏 #ArsenalUSA #COYG #AFC pic.twitter.com/kn90rSoVjL— Abdullah Yousef Alrooq (@abdullahalroug) July 30, 2016
Dean's info is usually very reliable--he doesn't tweet for attention. My only worry is that if they don't get the forward across the finish line, we'll get the "transfers are difficult" line--and still be stuck short. Seems the club is confident they can make it happen. Sounds promising, but we'll see. Speculation time! My guesses are they're trying for a home run--Cavani, Lewandowski, or Griezmann. My guess on the Spaniard is Alcacer. Thoughts?
#LRTs: Arsenal's scout Christopher Maskery has apparently confirmed we are in for a CB [Mustafi] & a £40-50m CF. #afc Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
We would've thought the same about Özil before he came to us, too. You never know which players may want a new challenge.
Exactly. People keep quoting the second junk papers or Twitter accounts that lack reliability over and over again hoping itone rumor will stick. What's the definition of insanity? But it does highlight the frustration of 10+ years and arsenals lack of willingness to overspend. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Dybala cavani etc are 60 mill or more in today's market I have no idea who we are after if we even are
Perhaps, still intrigued by Athletico Madrid moves though, adding Gaitan, Gameiro to their front line. They already have Griezmann, Carrasco, Correa, Torres and if Costa join, that will be a lot, player and wages wise.
If they're getting that help in attack then fine, but he'd better be a bona fide addition. If not, since I'm skeptical of them being able to pry any forward of quality away from their current team this late in the window, I honestly wouldn't balk at Arsenal giving Everton £40m + Gabriel for Stones and moving on. (They want more than 40m as per reports of city's "final" bid and I'll pay the English premium for someone with earnest Prem experience.) Lastly, if they do land a £50m rated striker this late in the season then, again, he better come good or the make-shift roster better surprise in the early going, because even before Wenger I was among those adamant about completing business early enough to have the side gel before the real season starts. In my dreams Kroenke tells Wenger every 3-4 points lost through the end of September is the equivalent of the cash value for an additional place in the final Prem standings. ie: The literal cost for not securing the roster going into opening day. Arsenal Summers = Spitting into the wind and K'vetching to the choir.
I would be on board with this if Stones was actually good at defending. He's somehow *worse* positionally than Gabriel. I agree with you, but the flip side of this is that you don't want to buy players that you're "meh" about, especially for the prices being discussed. Players are signed for 4-5 seasons, and not just 1.
Next year? Sure, still a lot of money and wages to cover though. Athletico is not most financially profitable club.
