Diccico was talking about expansion in 2005, and the stadium will be built by 2005...and we need more teams on the west! But what would we call them? The Dallas Rowdies? (eh too masculine) Dallas Spurs? Cowgirls? Coyotes? hmmm I like Coyotes and Spurs...
As a coach Tony was wonderful and the teams he produced were a joy to behold. As a league exec he seems woefully inadequate. During the first three years the total number of games available to be seen by an audience outside their local area has dropped my 50% and, if memory serves, average attendance has not changed. As much as I also believe that the MLS is run poorly in their first three years the EXPANDED TV coverage and they increased attendance each year by a good amount. Expansion is, or at least should be, out of the question. But moving a team or tow to areas that might provide greater revenue or greater attendance or both is not. The biggest obstacle to any move is egos. The pundits in charge will not easily admit that particular locations might have been poorly chosen by them or poorly promoted by the local group. Having said all that: If the league survives this year without any major financial disaster it could be the turning point. All actions have been taken to reduce expenses and the WWC will provide, hopefully, a bit of an extra boost after the end of the season and steps have been taken increase excitement and scoring. (increasing number and quality of forwards league wide should increase scoring) I hope the WUSA makes it. I get great enjoyment from seeing these great ladies play the beautiful game. However, I believe, if it succeeds, in will be in spite of the leadership, not because of it.
