I recently had a conversation with a Swiss person who asked when I thought the war would be over. My answer was when every Moslem girl learned how to read. (This somewhat shocked him, as I was accused of imposing American ideals on the world. Then again, there was a canton in Switzerland where women could not vote until about 1985). Anyway, this guy agrees with me. http://nationalreview.com/comment/comment-chickering010703.asp What do you think? I believe that the education of women will be a buffer against Islamofacism.
Education of women in third world nations (not just Islamic ones) is a key to a variety of health, economic, and welfare issues. There are plenty of non-Islamic states in subsaharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America which are throwing away half of the talent in their populations.
I know, except that militant Zimbabwans are not flying planes into American skyscrapers. I was mroe concerned about when this war ends. Empowerment of women does come with some societal costs (namely, ther men may actually become more radicalized at first, as the women are less reliant on men for sustenance and compete for jobs, but the long-term benefits outweigh short term problems. One interesting note in teh article is that in many Moslem countries women are becoming better educated. As is happening in Iran, that will lead to a challenge to the power of the Islamofacists.
